2:02 Impressive how you place a bottle in the wire so the babies receive as little human contact as possible. It seems as close to nursing off their moms as possible. I like your thinking. 3:08 Such a cute temper tantrum.

I absolutely love what you guys are doing! Those monkeys are adorable and it’s a shame they can’t be with their mommy, but you all are doing the next best thing. I have been obsessed with monkey lately watching video’s of different ones. I would love to have a monkey but I know that would be wrong on so many levels. And Just because they look like babies they are not babies. They can quickly turn on you when they get older. They aren’t that cute all the time. Keep up the good work! Peace!

They are smart for not putting anything soft in the cage. Putting something soft in there would add a level of unnatural dependency. The babies would usually have a teet in their mouth constantly while holding on to a living, breathing mom - even while they are sleeping. Its just an uncomfortable adjustment. Anything soft, like a stuffed animal, would no longer be accessible when they transition to life with a foster mom. Sure its fuzzy but it doesn't have a beating heart or provide the warmth a mom does. It would be just another issue for those babies to have to adapt to no longer having. So a little uncomfortable adjustment is just the best thing for them in the long run. They'll get used to it and be fine.

I watch other groups of monkeys and they always have a kidnapper ; who snatched a baby and they run off with it. Sometimes they’ll have for several days. I used to think the kidnappers were to help mother during the weaning process; but not sure about that fnymore, mother follows the kidnapper/baby till kidnapper finally let’s baby go and they immediately run to mom!! To nurse!!! The whole thing leaves me bewildered! And leaves baby anxious and starving!!

Yes, we do have that sort of thing happen, but it's a little complicated so please allow me to explain. Within our foster mother program, the females that enter the intro enclosures to adopt the babies are generally not the highest ranking females. There may be juveniles from the high ranking family group who enter as baby sitters, but the adoptive mothers are generally mid to low ranked females. Occasionally we get higher ranked females in the enclosure, but the reason we tend to use mid to low ranked females is because allowing high ranked females or the alpha female into an intro enclosure and keeping them there for a prolonged period of time can throw off the entire troop social hierarchy and subsequently cause quite a bit of chaos. When a lower ranked female then enters the troop with her adopted baby sometimes a higher ranking female will suddenly decide that she deserves/wants that baby as her own, so she will then steal or try to take that baby from the lower ranking adoptive mother, but they definitely will put up quite the fight to hang onto their baby and its not just something they let go of and wait around, generally they will keep trying to get the baby back and the baby will sometimes try to get back to its mother, this all depends on the scenario and temperament of the monkeys involved and size of troop etc. Fortunately this is not a big deal in our troops because the babies are not relying on their mothers milk for nutrition. Our babies are drinking their milk from the feeding cage, so it really doesn't matter which female is their mother, there is no real negative outcome and in fact a higher ranking female who steals a baby then bestows her rank upon her baby (if its female) and that baby automatically gets an advance in the troop hierarchy, which is more beneficial for the baby in the end. Now in the wild, this wouldn't necessarily happen all that often with Vervets. Because of the tight nit family groups in their social hierarchy, everyone knows who belongs to whom and there isn't really a need for the higher ranking females to steal a lower ranking baby, because the higher ranking females would most often be the first ones to be impregnated. So they would already have their own babies and not need to steal them from anyone else, now of course outside conditions and stress can cause animals to do strange things and in the case of the videos I assume you're talking about, it's hard to say what's actually happening considering how much negative human interaction is occurring on a daily basis.

I wonder if some babies pitch a fit about going into the feeding cage because they have to split snuggles and nursing? (Harlow demonstrated what a difficult conflict this is for baby monkeys.) I wonder if putting in some sort of snuggly that they could cling onto while they nurse would ease that conflict. (Of course, then you're faced with refilling bottles *and* cleaning snugglies.)
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 6 жыл бұрын
cavy herd It’s hard to say exactly why, but my immediately thought is that it’s more about the fact they are being forced to learn an unnatural action. Beyond snuggling the babies are accustomed to hanging onto their moms and suckling or at least holding the teet in their mouth consistently. So their natural instinct is to have milk delivered to them directly whenever they need it even when they’re sleeping. The feeding cage forces them to get up and walk over, climb inside and drink then climb back out and resume whatever they were doing. It’s like if you had to get up in the middle of the night for a drink of water but had to walk outside and stick your head under a tap just to drink, then go back inside. It screws up your whole routine, and causes a certain level of discomfort that would cause anyone to get a little frustrated. As far as the soft toys to snuggle are concerned, we don’t implement anything like that because of how unnatural it is. Beyond the cleaning and rate at which we would go through those things, these babies won’t have access to a doll in the future and giving them one now could cause all sorts of strange dependencies. It’s also important for the babies to feel the warmth of a body, to feel the pulse of blood flow and the movement that comes with life. So in the end it’s just better to allow them to have moments of difficulty, because this is far more natural and informative for their development.

What is the reason you are requiring the baby to go in the cage to get milk when it is known that touch and closeness are very important aspect for healthy , secure development of the baby ?
@hohohopium
@hohohopium 3 жыл бұрын
It's been two years since you wrote this. I hope it's occurred to you in those two years that these are MONKEYS, not humans. You're anthropomorphizing. Besides that, once the baby of under one year of age is in the troop and the adoptive mother's bodies don't produce milk, what do you think is going to happen? Do you think that staff members are going to go into the various enclosures, full of monkeys that might attack them, to handfeed the growing babies until they reach the age of one? The adoptive mothers wouldn't let the humans get anywhere near the babies, even if they tried to.

Vervet Monkey Foundation sorry I have an other question I'm curious 😊. Do you do the same when they are ex pet? If not how do you do?
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 6 жыл бұрын
Marie claire Gauthier well it depends. If the ex pet is less than a year old, then yes they must learn the feeding cage, sometimes in this case it’s not a bottle but rather a bowl of milk. But if the ex pet is over a year old then they don’t need to drink milk so they don’t use the feeding cage and at that point they should be too big to fit inside the cage. Do you have a pet monkey?
@marieclairegauthier2217
@marieclairegauthier2217 6 жыл бұрын
Vervet Monkey Foundation no no I dont have pet monkey, I'm living in France! It's just because I'm curious to understand how it's "working" the integration. It's very nice that the baby find a new mom, so I was thinking what's happen to adult ex pet. If they are going in a troop too. Thank you very much for you reply😊
@VervetMonkey
@VervetMonkey 6 жыл бұрын
Marie claire Gauthier ah, yes he adult ex pets go to a troop as well, but it’s a very different integration process. First they go to quarantine, then to an intro enclosure attached to a troop. Then they slowly get to meet the troop by being released out into the main enclosure. But this takes a while because multiple people must monitor the monkey and be sure that they are okay in the troop and let them back into the into enclosure for safety whenever they are overwhelmed.
