Is there a reason you didn't change the antialiasing to simpler ones so it looks blocky and vivid instead of blurry? Maybe your "game capturing thingy" is different from mine.. I dunno.

@@SukacitaYeremia IIRC, Dual Strike does have some very questionable rendering choices. In map view, in particular, sprites were replaced by low-poly models, though there was also some dodgy perspective drawing in battle view

Can we get a video on the pipe-runner? I don't know if it's a good or bad unit (probably bad since people build it on adwb before resigning) but I wanna know why.

I don't think naval is expensive because of balance. Honestly I think the devs basically thought, "Well a ship is really really big compared to a tiny tank so obviously it's going to cost a lot more"

Its still a stupid mindset because for that 9k funds you buy Five whole tanks And somehow for the prices 12 tanks you get a shitty cruiser that does little damage to air units

I don't disagree with that but they need to actually have a lot more durability. Especially the cruiser should have far more resistance against battlecopter attacks.

@@DAMD01 The DoR Carrier is a massive improvement in function over the Dual Strike one in general though. Dual Strike carriers really are just glorified water missiles that also happen to be able to transport (which is basically only relevant in pure naval/air battles where APCs aren't an option for resupply). Days of Ruin actually makes them function like an aircraft carrier. Even my younger, very casual, more high-end unit inclined self found the Dual Strike carrier to be lame. Absolutely loved the Days of Ruin carrier though.

“It should require a fighter escort!” “It should have high range!” “This sounds powerful. Maybe 30,000?” “AA guns probably would look too weak with that amount of damage... Carriers can shoot missiles, right?” Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear the design team brainstorming this unit.

Competitive HF can make it viable. Especially "Escaping Arkham" map, where the map is surrounded by pipes and there is a pipe-runner dedicated base for it.

Lower the cost of each by 7000 or so and buff the cruiser. It would be great to have the balance be better on AWBW.

Sounds like real life. Carriers IRL are notoriously costly that very few nations have the wealth and logistical capabilities to sustain even one of them.

Yeah but a ship can trap 20.000$ fighter jet and vice-versa, also battleship in a lake. Sacrificing balance for realism is bad for advance wars (and other games) where competitive is the only thing keeping it alive because you need a players that is coming in and happy to stay not angry at infantry, tank, anti-air, b-copter spam so they leave the game to die.

4:12 Carriers given their cost should have 1-8 range, basically force your opponent to use naval units to combat it.

I agree, it should be an apex unit with that price tag. The devs just really wanted aircraft at the top of the unit hierarchy (no pun intended.) Naval units are typically just used to support your land and air units. Only in rare cases can they completely stand on their own - and even then, the map must either be islands or have cornered bases/airports.

I love the concept of the carrier even if IS technically useless. Days of Ruin reimagined it in such a cool way where now it can outright produce aerial units.

I've always enjoyed the idea of aircraft carriers, so I was happy to see them in Dual Strike and Days of Ruin. My only wish would be for it to either lessen the cost of it or justify the cost by having it repair air units and have them readily move from it's deck or something

The Carrier is nothing to fool around with and requires a huge investment and planning, I do like how it’s like a Mobile Airport. I do love the sound effects for the missiles and bombs and when they hit their targets, you really need to do a Dual Strike playthrough Mangs.

I would say it's more like a mobile APC than an airport. If it were like in day of ruin, then yeh it would be a true mobile airport.

The fact that naval units went overpriced for three (arguably four) whole games is still kind of insane to me. You have to wonder what dude on the dev team was so adamant about saying "NONONO IF YOU LOWER THE PRICE NAVY WILL BE OP" whenever it was (probably inevitably) brought up that such a glaring issue never got fixed.

I mean in real life to build a ship is really expensive like an American Arleigh Burke-class destroyer cost about 1 billion dollars to make while a f35 is 78 million and an M1 abrams costs about 6 million to produce. So there price is justified by the fact in real life boats are really expensive… as much as it sucks. (As a side note the most technologically advance American aircraft carrier costed 13 billion dollars to produce making it the most expensive warship ever built.)

@@Miami2514 That's correct but if you were going for accuracy then the ships should be proportionally as powerful as their price. If you're going for irl costs, then battleships should have irl AA-guns to fend off airstrikes. Otherwise don't bother, imo. Clearly game balance was the primary concern here. And yet they seemingly mishandled it so consistently? It just seems bizarre.

@@papayapayaya7998 The battleship was really strong but highly overpriced, submarines were good because they were effective against battleships and cruisers were interesting but weak. Really not that strong overall

@@thepersonwhocomentz yeah in the games sense there should be no excuse on why a cruiser sucks a taking on battle copters or things like the battleship not doing that much more then rockets then most things. But what I want for the price of naval units is survival ability like how (again I’m using real life here that it took the uss Arizona 14 minutes to sink after constant bombardment during pear harbor.) ships are built to last but in advance wars they are paper thin which really makes me annoyed.

@@Miami2514 if you go for realism tanks should attacl differently as well. I am a trained tank soldier and we were trained to use the cannon against battle copters and not the machine gun.

I like the concept of Days of ruins Carrier much more.But the price is even higher. I think 30000 with a seaplane preloaded in is a fair price.and you can pay 15000 to build another sea plane.

It's kind of annoying that the DoR carrier can only build a set amount of seaplane and after those are destroyed the carrier is useless.

@@Teinve sea planes are indeed amazing, but at 45,000 to get your first one out they need to be that great to justify the price tag. Overall they could use a bit more fuel IMO as I rarely get 2 attacks off before booking it back for supply. While you can supply them with APCs I feel the fuel allotments are a tad too strict though the ammo is spot on, or could even drop a shot in favor of fuel capacity. Side note, the 4 mavericks on the hardpoints and only 3 shots triggers my OCD to no end...

28k for the carrier, then 15k for the seaplane. Still, you get to use air units on naval maps, which is cool because people often aren't prepared for it. Days of Ruin also changed carriers to be way worse at actual combat, but made them able to launch the air units they carry for their full movement (and being able to shoot afterward!). Less anti-air denial, more of a support force with aircraft--a bit more like the WW2 carriers than your modern ones. I liked that.

carrier in day of ruin is a good unit for the price you pay for imo. It can keep your aircrafts safe from cruisers and fighters/dusk, resupply + repair, actively attack enemy aircrafts instead of being a sitting duck, and most importantly, launch your aircrafts without wasting a turn to drop like in dualstrike. And in matches where there are harbor but no airport, carriers can also provide air power with seaplanes which changes the tide of the game. Sure the price is high but I think it's worth it once you deploy it

Which I don't get why it's not like that. The Carrier should just be a ship launching naval fighters. I would of made it like the Allies Carrier from Red Alert 2.

How would that work though? Would the fighters they launch become independent units that you can command separately, like the Seaplane from DoR - and most importantly, would lost fighters be replenished free of charge? Because if they needed to spend money to replace losses, they'd become a massive money sink.

They can do that in DoR. They trade all of their airpower-killing to make aircraft scary and they are the only way to get Seaplanes which are stupidly strong considering they can attack everything (but they have very limited Ammo and Fuel).

Love the Carrier. It can be clutch when you know how to use it, otherwise it’s just a big water Log. Can’t wait to see Anti-Tank stats from Days of Ruin, one of the more newer interesting units.

Honestly the Days of Ruin carrier is a pretty neat ship. Getting two cheap squadrons of multirole fighters out of it is a good way to make the 30000 tag worth it.

I feel they should produce their own type of airplane like how the carriers on Starcraft 1 were able to produce it, maybe just 1 or 2 per unit or something like that so they could defend against like that example of the bomber.

6:25 Just wondering, Is it really that big of a deal if the damage is lower than expected if it one shots everything it can attack by default? Maybe they put it this low so some CO's with bad naval attack stats would keep their debuffs relevant? (It's still too expsneive though for sure)

I mean if you kamikazi a recon on a mega you sure do waste its ammo and depending how much ammo was wasted on the mega you might get a free hit with a neo tonk since then all the mega can do is use its heavy machine guns

Not very knowledgeable on competitive play so maybe this is a bad idea but what about, instead of reducing the cost and increasing the range, they leaned more heavily into it being a “mobile airport”? Let it heal air units (not just refuel them) and let the air units even move from them instead of needing to be unloaded first? Seems like a big buff because they could theoretically be hiding units. If that’s still not enough, even maybe let air units be deployed from them (but I have the feeling that the ability to make more airports could leave them broken in high money matches… but then again, what do I know?)

Keep the price Deploys air units with the ability to move -1 minimum range (so it can target a bomber before it can close the distance Buff damage to air units slightly so it can properly one shot even while slightly damaged Especially the idea of it being able to have air units move on the same turn will make it really function like a portable airport which in essence, that is what a carrier is.

you can shield carrier from bomber if you carry 2 battle copters and release them to block 2 angles when a bomber is approaching =))

I feel like the carrier should be able to attack every unit and be a bit cheaper. Maybe give it a secondary machine gun/anti air gun to deal some chip recoil damage, and also be able to threaten smaller units on the coast.

One thing that isn't mentioned here is the fact that it can attack unsubmerged submarines. Doubt you'll ever run across the situation, but it's a thing.

Paradoxically, naval units dominate smaller maps with their enormous indirect range, but small maps can barely fit the 40+ properties and a body of water to justify buying a carrier. They're still plenty useful in high funds and predeployment maps, but those just feel like cheating, no?

The aircraft carrier... where do I begin? true, large range, relatively high power, high ammo and fuel count. But Booooiiii, that price, for 2/3 of its price you can get a fighter that has larger range and is not vulnerable to subs and battleships. But hey, you got a mobile arirport that can refuel planes over long ass maps. Thank goodness Days of Ruin made a complete overhaul to this unit. First the nerfs. They got rid of its missiles and they got weak anti air machine guns (I love the firing animation of those though) that deal about 50% damage as an anti air unit. Then their defenses went way down, as a single sub can sink it, both being 100%, and much more units can hit it harder and easier too. The buffs? They can build seaplanes, a unit that is an hybrid between a fighter (interceptor in this game) and a bomber, they can build them for 15,000 so they are cheap, but keep in mind that you invested 28,000 first, so effectivelly you spend 22,000 for each of the 4 planes you can build. The main benefit is to be able to bring planes in an airportless map. Another buff is that they now repair planes in its deck, akin to an airport, so you can keep the pressure on the enemy by refueling and healing 2 hp for 2 units that are close to their bases. And another nice thing is the new launch command, normally a unit that can carry units can only drop units besides them and spend their turn of both units, here the planes retain their whole mobility and can take off, spend their movement points and attack at the same turn, and it doesn´t even spend the carriers turn! This means that you can launch 2 seaplanes, attack an enemy, position the aircraft carrier to a better place, and load 2 injured planes so next turn you can have freshly repaired units to keep on punishing the enemy. Still a flexing move to build one in the first place, but in the right hands a single carrier and all of its 4 plane units can change the tide of a match.

I understand why devs made them that way. Naval units determine the remainder of a match- Especially if the map was built with them in mind. Naval superiority, once properly established, is basically impossible to challenge. Plus if the maps are built right, naval can lockdown airports and there's nothing land units can do about it. (They're outranged) or worse - if a port is connecting two landmasses, a naval unit can easily block and heal. The major problem is that it's difficult to build fair maps that consider the full land-air-sea meta, so most map builders just ignore naval or only include a couple ports for a slight supplementary role.

IRL Naval Ships is a big investment for a Nation's military as it is one of the most effective power projection tool superpower nation had, thus justify its costly price. Strategically they never operate alone and got some strike group esorting it, Unfortunately this concept doesn't translate well in Advance Wars

I think to balance the carrier, they should've given it a minimum range of 1 and have it counterattack. That way it can truly counter air units and stop people using copters to chip at it.

My thoughts exactly! Like, have they seen a real aircraft carrier before? I imagine the devs thought that the Japanese planes were just spontaneously combusting during Pearl Harbor instead of being shot down xD

I think they should make Carrier that could attack both Ground and Air units alike+ only 1 minimum range. Heck, Look Carrier in Red Alert 3. I would balance carriers just by enhancing its deffense against air units (or at least make it counter) and diminishing its price. I do think carrier's range is okay.

Sorry for the nerdy response (especially given my "outside looking in" perspective), I think the Carrier's biggest issue is the developers weren't sure whether they wanted a Capital ship or an Escort and ended up making something that was neither. Realistically, I 'd have split the roles and honed them: make the Carrier an expensive plane producing capital ship (as they did in DoR) and either put AA Gun secondaries on everything or add a separate "Frigate" with AA Missiles (or both). As for Sub-spotting, given the "Cruiser" (can't help feeling its more of a Destroyer) can carry Helicopters, maybe they should add a Scout Copter that can detect subs when actively searching...Thoughts?

I mean if you want to make it closer to real life then carriers should be launching naval fighters and the destroyer should be sub hunting. Both a carrier and destroyer can sub hunt in real life.

carriers are not supposed to be deployed by themselves you should have cruisers and black boats within the carriers minimum range to make it so the enemy cant get that close.

I play with Eagle so I rely a lot on carrier to refuel my stealth fighter …i also make sure it’s well escorted with subs and cruisers..it would be cool if units could get repaired while refueling like an airport

I would think 25k cost with an attack boost and 1 less minimum range would be fair. Still pricey but fixing up those weakness would make it more deployable.

Navy is missing a lot of key units and the carrier would never have done enough to flesh out the naval aspect of AW. Modern navies have Aircraft Carriers, Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates, Attack Submarines and Missile Submarines. And we see both Diesel and Nuclear propelled subs. Most aircraft carriers are in the midsize range and are not like the USA's Supercarriers. There are also littoral combat ships/Corvettes. The Russians field a Battlecruiser-size class of guided missile cruisers. Realistically, this is what should have been done: Shore -> Naval units can traverse shore tiles; they're just sitting in its shallow waters. Sea -> 1 Star terrain Reef -> 2 star terrain Oil Rig = 3 star property, provides 2000g funds per turn. Storm = 4 star terrain, reduces vision of units inside by 2. Seaport -> updated fund generation to 2000g funds per turn. Bridge -> Naval units can traverse under bridges. Naval units on a bridge tile can be traversed by land/air units on or over the bridge tile. Naval units under a bridge cannot use indirect weapons (eg Battleship) All naval units have a huge resistance to land units, though indirects (rockets) do more than direct units (neo tank). Corvette = Roughly analogous to a Recon + Infantry combination. Can capture properties. 2 vision like infantry. 4000 funds. Frigate = Roughly analogous to a Tank + Anti-Air combination. Can capture properties. 2 vision as well. 8000 funds. Destroyer = Roughly analogous to a Medium Tank. Also has Anti-Submarine Torpedoes. 3 vision. 16000 funds. Cruiser = 2-4 Range Anti-Naval, Anti-Aircraft. 5 vision. Can move and then attack. Same cost. Battleship: Increased firepower and defenses but otherwise unchanged function. Aircraft Carrier: Huge defenses, 20-30% more damage than the Missile Truck, 2-6 range Anti-Aircraft missiles, 7 vision, can move and then attack, and repair and resupply squadron based *airplanes*, which would be an air unit expansion Interceptor, (Air) Fighter, updated Stealth Fighter, and Strike Fighter, and carry them + all forms of Helicopters with a 2 unit capacity. It just wouldn't carry a Bomber. Black Bombs if you're a Black Hole CO. (Attack) Submarine: Vision reduced to 4 while submerged, fuel increased. Missile Submarine: 3-7 range Anti-Naval/Anti-Land missiles, low ammo count, can fire while submerged for reduced damage, low defenses. Lander: Cheaper, more fragile, less fuel. Cargo Ship: More health (on par with a Destroyer), 4 units I would also do a Nation Unique Unit overhaul and chuck the Black Boat in as a unique Black Hole only unit along with an OS Amphibious Carrier, OS Nuclear Submarine, BM Ekranoplan, YC Gunboat, YC Midget Submarine, and GE Battlecruiser. I'm reading these "balancing things" off a huge personal overhaul that I've been working on for years and long before I learned AWBW ever existed so if you want the full document, I can zip file it to those who are interested.

I feel like the CV in this game was definitely rushed in development, hence why it feels so incomplete and gimmicky. It should've been able to repair air units (like real life CVs are capable of) and launch them instead of simply unloading them. Even then, if you need to resupply and repair aircraft, the Black Boat exists. While you can shut down airports with them, by the time you actually field them for battle you likely already have better anti-air counters unless your opponent's airfield is very far inland that it's too risky to send Fighters to do the job.

You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons

I like your idea of reducing minimum range by 1. My idea is to make the carrier especially unique. Because it's high cost It could be the only indirect in the game capable of striking both air and land units. The damage and range against land units would definitely be significantly less than a battleship but will still prioritize taking out air units. Maybe your idea could be combined with this one but I wonder if that would be too OP.

I could see this (and misiles) being useful for airport locking. It's price is somewhat justified by the fact that the things it one-shots cost over 20K themselves. Also the fact that a bomber can't reach it (only its minimum range area) means that incoming bombers are very vulnerable to cruiser/fighter/other carrier fire for one turn. it all really isn't so terribly balanced APART FROM the fact that naval units just cost so ridiculously much.

I think that if you were to reduce the price for battleships and give the a little nerf then make the current battleships price the Carriers price that would make it a bit more worth it. As for the minimum range/Bomber thing I think that's actually a good counter. And if you have a cruiser as backup it would deter your opponent from using that strategy a little bit.

from what footage I could find, the carrier was originally going to be introduced in wars 64. i'd balance it by making it able to detects subs.

Today is my Birthday, so I guess the Carrier is my unit now. I also think thay 18,000 would be a bit too low for the Carrier. 24,000 is more of a reasonable price. I’m sure you’re not interested, but that’s what I plan to do in a AW fangame I’m making.

I feelclike the devs want you to build an entire fleet to cover each naval unit's weakness and the carrier really emphasizes this with needing cruisers and fighters to cover the blind spots. I love this concept but at 20k+ a peice its just not viable

I almost universally only use carriers to lock an airport down. Even if it prevents them from building units it makes enemy composition easier to deal with

How to balance the Carrier: Version 1: It can also repair air units, and dropped units are ready to move. Version 2: Costs 20k and has 1 less minimum Range and +1 Vision. Makes it a great addition to any fleet. Version 3: Make it DoR.

For the price, Carriers should get one more range and repair landed aircraft. Also, have you considered wigs and fake beards/mustaches? Not that you need them, but you are the perfect canvas for them, we could see a new Mangs every video.

Carriers are useless because they exist irl to make power projection possible at extreme range. An airbase is always better than a carrier, but you can't exactly build an airbase in the middle of the ocean. Irl aircraft often don't have the fuel or range to hit their targets so you NEED a carrier. this is not the case in advanced wars. so its kinda useless. might as well just buff cruisers.

Grit carriers are actually more useful because they circumvent the range problem. Bombers can't get within the minimum range without entering the maximum range. Which just means that it'll get targeted by two bombers simultaneously as opposed to just one.

I like the thematicism of it. Can't have a naval battle without carriers. That made it something I'd wanted to see since the first Advance Wars. Happy it got in but yeah, a bit weak. I'm a casual player, I played through Campaign and War Room, a few runs in Survival mode trying out various COs (btw would love to see more coverage of this mode if it hasn't been done to death already), and that was mostly it, pretty sure I never built a Carrier in all that time. I think at the current cost, it could be fine with the additional ability to hit ground/sea units with the same range, give it a big ol' howitzer. That would pretty much rule the seas but at 30k funds I think it would be fine. Possibly some other minor additions like the ability to repair loaded air units, possibly just a +2 instantly for loading an air unit, better serving its thematic purpose as a mid-sea air hub. I like the price, it seems, again, thematic, but yeah it's gotta be waaaay good at that price point, so maybe lowering the price would have to be somewhere in a re-balance of the unit.

Happy New Year Mangs! I love the unit reviews, you give that entertaining charm of it! Anyway in my opinion the price tag for the Carriers should cost 24,000,have increased offense and defense,be able to scout out subs to attack them similar to cruisers,make other air units that were sent out by the carrier to get a turn to move them, and last thing is for them to have increased movement of 6 spaces. Do you agree with me Mangs or anyone else in that matter? It just falls in line with the other meme useless units like Missiles and Megatanks. I wish there will include a carrier in Advance Wars 2 reboot.

The fact the Carrier cannot defend itself against Bombers...when it could launch AIR UNITS. Just tells me that the devs did not think about it at all. If the Carrier had a chance to defend itself against ALL types of Air Units and still do some damage across a map. It would be worth its price. I think that Bomber weakness ruins the concept of a Carrier. Which I am not saying the Carrier would come out of a battle unscathed. No, it would. I am saying the bomber would likely lose just as much in a counter attack against a Carrier. Such a terrible mistake. They were better off building a Hovering Neo Tank that fired lasers and had energy shields. Able to blast a target from halfway across the map!

I mean, basically the main thing the stealth does that the bomber doesn't is counter anti-air units. A stealth can move through the carrier's range, then attack it, with nothing the carrier can do to stop it. Same for missiles, cruisers and anti-air. The additional bomber weakness leaves the carrier critically under-equipped.

In real life, Carriers actually cannot realistically defend themselves at close ranges. They're big, relatively slow, and their defenses are literally a last resort option if it does see combat. The Battle of Midway proved this when the USN dive bombers were literally right on top of the IJN CVs and the latter couldn't do anything against them. A CV's best defense is its ability to remain beyond the striking range of hostile forces.

Ig to me I always thought if a unit destroys more value then it cost then it was worth it as it's a net positive. Now ik specific circumstances can call for any number of things but that's my generic way to judge value

Obviously the price has to be slashed by at least 40 %. But I would also split the unit type into two. One dedicated to air support and one that's a water missile. The air support would retain being the carrier while the water missile would be some sort of amphibious robot. The water missile would then get marginally reduced movement. This ties back to my balancing of the missile. Or rather, how I rebalance the anti-air tank to make the missile worth it. I want to split the niche into two: a medium speed but big range anti air with good firepower and a slow but short range anti air with high firepower. Two unit styles for two different strategic uses. One for zoning, one for surprise attacks.

How I would balance this monster is give it direct-fire anti-air guns as well, and thus, the ability to move in and fire on an air unit as well as snipe them from a distance. Basically make it impossible to take this thing down without throwing a bunch of air unit at it and making its only genuine weakness be the submarine. Balance out its insane cost with the fact that it basically grants you full control of the air within its firing and movement range until your opponent heavily invests in a full countermeasure. What would be cool about that too, is if you managed to get out a carrier, a battleship, a cruiser, and a submarine (in other words, the full fleet from Battleship sans the non-existent destroyer), you'd basically have full control over the seas. How cool would it be to win a match that way?

So the fighters unload already exhausted, this is the part of the video I was waiting for from the start. If carrier could deploy a fighter to defend itself against bombers, it would work exactly like a carrier in real life. Real carriers allow to deploy planes at any point for a fast offensive strike, it's too bad carriers in game don't come even close to what they are supposed to be. If I were in charge of designing this, I would make it even more expensive, absurdly so, but tune them up to the point of becoming a mini boss. I would turn the carrier into a meme but not because how bad it is, it would be a meme because you need to take 10 turns without building units to make them.

Now that I’ve actually gone through Dual Strike, the Carrier sounds like a very stupid unit to me. Like, I can sort of see why you’d want another air counter at sea with cruisers being so squishy, but the fix to that is to just make cruisers less squishy. A full health cruiser does anti air just fine. To say nothing of the air unit docking both crafts have, which is cool on paper but rather pointless in practice on both. So, in my opinion, not only is the carrier expensive and clunky, but also kind of pointless. It’s offensive use, anti air, is usually either something I don’t need, or something I need elsewhere. The fact that it costs so much more than the units I want to make instead is just insult to injury.
