This film is 84 years-old. Joel McCrea and Jean Arthur are easily recognizable by their voices after all these years. McCrea married Frances Dee in 1933. His oldest son Jody was born in 1934 when this movies was made. He died in 2009 at age 74. Joel McCrea died in 1990. He had 3 children and never divorced. Jean Arthur married but never had children. She died at age 90 in 1991 at Carmel Ca. They live on in these movies. Thanks for posting this.

A very charming film. Thanks for sharing. The blind beggar sitting outside a theater running a WW I play was old enough to have been blinded by mustard gas in the actual war. The policeman who was protective of him was the right age to have been a veteran and comrade. They showed the difference between how theater acting was done verses acting for the silver screen. And the movie was made at a time when it should have been obvious that the hope that the Great War would end all wars had been dashed. Arthur's line to the scared Dough Boy about that hope actually brought a tear to my eye. And yet the film was a good comedy on top of all of that. Bravo!

Jan 28, 2019 ~ 83 yrs ago these 2 were on the Silver Screen. I love these oldies with believable story lines and no loud back ground noise to drown out what the actors were saying. All the special affects were performed by the actors or stunt men that took great risks doing 1st time stunts for a few dollars more. // No TV back in those days. Entertainment was for adult minds not 12 yr olds as today's movie plots. // Thanks Joanne for movies of yesteryear with greed for money.

VincentDS I agree about Joel; maybe because his style was natural and laid back. He was more modern than his contemporaries. He made it seems so easy (like Mitchum), which made him sort of ahead of his time. I actually used to think he was about 15 years younger than he actually was, like in William Holden’s or Gregory Peck’s generation. I could imagine him in the Man in the Gray Flannel Suit or Sunset Boulevard, or to Kill a Mockingbird instead of those dumb pre code films he wasted his younger years in. Love Foreign Correspondent!
@vin.handle4 жыл бұрын
@@carolynderricks3226 I agree. Joel McCrea was a huge star in the 1930s and early 1940s and a favorite of Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. I think his career tailed off in the 1940s and he failed to make more classic movies because of a lack of ambition. He liked ranching and riding and preferred making Westerns. I agree that he would have been great in the movies you mentioned and also in a lot of the movies starring Jimmy Stewart. And in addition to Foreign Correspondent, I liked Sullivan's Travels and The Most Dangerous Game.

Jean Arthur! I immediately recognised her unique voice and remembered her in Billy Wilder's 1948 comedy A FOREIGN AFFAIR (set in postwar Berlin), where she plays the aptly named rigid, stern, and rigorous Congresswoman Phoebe FROST.
@guesswho51224 жыл бұрын
@T Z Yes he 'defrosted' her, but I always find his change of heart and the ending of the film a bit unconvincing or lame. Yet, on the other hand, that Erika von Schluetow (Schlütow) ... There was a real affair going on, I guess, between Billy Wilder and that City of Berlin: Beginning in the late 1920s, he had contributed to films (PEOPLE ON SUNDAY, shot in Berlin with amateurs) and worked as a film critic, in 1948 he had directed this here film, and in 1961 (interrupted by the erection of the notorious Berlin Wall), he had returned once more for ONE, TWO, THREE.

Excellent film! The pace was relentless all the way. As with most of the golden age movies the endings were so abrupt. Would make a great remake - Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence... So often I see comments about McCrea being underrated though out his career, but I disagree. He frequently turned down roles that would have portrayed him as someone he didn't like, but which could have broadened his fanbase... My favourite from what I've seen is, Interns Can't Take Money, with Barbara Stanwyck... Every actor was great in that one...

This charming film contrasts implausibly planned crimes (and ludicrous predictions of them) with the sophisticated, elegant and savvy repartee of the three principal players. It tests credulity but the charm of the actors wins us over. I crush on Jean Arthur every time and she makes a suitable comedic and aesthetic match with Joel McCrae. The setting, premise and plot are revisited in “Henry’s Crimes” (2010) with an analogous pairing in Keanu Reeves and gorgeous Vera Farmiga. ADVENTURE IN MANHATTAN (1936) directed by Edward Ludwig also starring Reginald Owen and Thomas Mitchell
