Caleb Cox I wouldn’t say a tragedy to literature. GoT equates too: we all hate each other, but we all have a common enemy. GRRM is a atheist boy who thinks global warming is the worst thing ever and GoT is basically that fear mix with a juxtaposition of Tolkien writing.

He has been working on game of thrones series (the biggest tv show ever), released a book (fire and blood) worked on other tv shows. Helped right elden ring lore and world building and also writing one of the most complex books ever. He has hundreds of character and so many plot points to tie up. I am of two minds on Martin's writing speed: writing slow has value, and good writers take their time in crafting a well-put-together story. I do not begrudge someone putting as much effort as possible into a text to make it the best possible product. I'm also not going to criticise his habit of gardening in epic fantasy. It's a perfectly valid approach to writing. However, I do take issue with just how much else he took on in the interim between 2011 and now. I get that procrastination and success based stress are things, but he took on multiple writing projects for other books and for TV. He has also finished 2 whole 700+ Page books and a number of short stories related to the ASoIaF universe in that almost 10-year time frame. That is to say nothing of his writing responsibilities for television or his producing roles. He clearly enjoys writing and writes a lot. Otherwise, we would see nothing in these last 9 years. But we have ample evidence that he doesn't always need a decade to write a story. And to me, that's frustrating. So on the one hand, sure, he needs to take his time. And especially with the last season being taken so poorly, I'm sure that has added to the stress of writing these final books. But I think there are legitimate criticisms of his writing practice to be levied against him.

writing the ending is a lot harder, specially if your style of writing is more Gardener than Architecture where you already have thought out your ending right from the start from all the many storylines that are interconnected with each other, details, foreshadowing and conspiracy theories that have to have pay offs while also making sense I mean if you've read them you know there's an enormous amount of Set Ups that now have to pay off and most of that has to happen in The Winds of Winter and with all this he's been having to deal with the show(multiple shows) and feeling burnt out and uninspired as well, so I'm not surprised at all, considering that he wants it all to end Great and not just good, he's a Perfectionist and he's paying for that and that's why I don't think the pushback does anything positive, he definitely cares about it more than we do but my whole point is that it's more complicated than most people make it out to be, some people talk about it as if he's just Lazy or he just doesn't care which I find very stupid. if he takes alternative projects when he's trying to finish Winds of Winter then that means he's pretty burnt out and his creativity is not working well and that's why he did other projects. personally I've started reading other books and there's just so many great SciFi/Fantasy Universes out there that I'm not gonna be constantly wait for it, it's not healthy to be so attached to one thing that's not coming out anytime soon.

I've often thought that it was fortunate for Tolkien that LotR was written in relative obscurity. He was largely able to work on the story as he saw fit and only took feedback from a handful of trusted people. The later Harry Potter books appeared to suffer from Rowling trying to live up to fan expectation and make each more "epic" than the last but really just making them progressively more bloated. I won't pretend to know why it's taken Martin 10 years and counting to write this book, but I don't think the constant attention and grousing helps him at all. Nor do the constant invitations to speak, the adaptations of his work that want him to consult/write, etc. We'll never know, but if this series had been nothing more than a low-key fantasy hit until after the final book was released, I suspect that we would have already seen the series conclude years ago. As it is, I just hope that he finishes it at all.

It took about 18 years from the original publication date of the Hobbit, to that of Return of the King. How many years ago was A Game of Thrones published? It's amazing how quickly your writing can progress when your story isn't bogged down with unnecessary descriptions of food and armour/clothing, lists of minor characters' formulaically colourful nicknames, long lists of songs played at weddings (Iron Lances, the Day They Hanged Black Robin, Two Hearts That Beat as One...), gratuitous rape scenes, and insanely graphic descriptions of an underage female protagonist's anatomy.

Obviously its a tall cup writing a long an epic fantasy but there's so many great authors who do it and dont get half the recognition Martin does. Steven Erickson wrote all 10 books of Malazan within like a decade, and that was even crazier feat because the world building is ridiculous. Brandon Sanderson is crushing it with Stormlight Archive and both of these are much more creative and original worlds. There's only been 1 release in a decade; that's nuts and is unheard of. I think your right, it could be laziness as well but like you said its probably more because of time management. He's to busy now doing a bunch of other projects he just doesn't have time to finish. Most writers release their stuff first before movies are made on it not the other way around and I think that will be the doom of the rest of the books and we might not ever see them. Shoot now they are talking about doing a new series that starts 300 years prior, and I'm sure Martin is helping them with the material.

One thing I’m sure of though is that he won’t finish his other projects, he has more Dunk & Egg stories & wants to write more books that take place in Westeros. I am pretty sure he will end up selling the world of Westeros to a group he trusts to continue stories in that universe after he passes but I’m sure he’ll have some rules that need to be followed. I'm not a writer myself, but as I was reading the last two books, and specially with the Aegon reveal, it just seems to me that if a story has beginning, middle and end, introducing characters and opening plot lines is something you should do at the beginning, not at the middle. If the 5th book is still in the beginning, then how are you going to end in two books? surely you need another 5 at least. As I say I'm not a writer, but I will be surprised if he can indeed finish in a satisfactory way in 7 books. Seems like he would need 10 at least. Which of course will probably never happen. He's "people are entitled and they want instant gratification" is bullshit though.

I think he could do it in 8 books total. The Aegon story line might not take too long to wrap up. He could possibly do it in 7 books total but it might be difficult since Dany still hasn't left Essos and is actually just being found by the Dothraki at the end of Dance. I wish he was younger and could have all the time he wants to write a bunch of books in the series and then write a few more Dunk and Egg novellas, but it is what it is.

The last two books should have been one book, trimmed and shortened to a faster pace. George has one great problem...he is a gardener and that is fine if you start writing a story. Then it is good, because it makes it easier to write, but once you reach a certain point you must make a plan and I think George has no plan beyond some cool ideas. I think he is struggling to pull all these characters together, but I do not think he can do it without cutting plot and killing off chracters.

The first 5 seasons (especially the first one) are really similar to the books, because they are the adaptations of the books, the season 6 it’s good, has epic moments and RR Martin was behind it so it will not be so different from the book, but in the 7 and 8 season Martin wasn’t there anymore and leave instructions of how it had to end, but not how the f... it will get there because at the time he didn’t know so those seasons may differ from the book but we don’t know how much and maybe he would decide that he doesn’t like that end anymore and change everything. In conclusion, the series are good and really loyal to the books, the first season it’s just like the books, except from small things like Renly appearing for the first time in Kingslanding, so it doesn’t affect the history a lot in that season and at the long run obviously some arcs and events happen different or don’t happen but you’ll understand since the books supports more info and history than the books (that on the first 5 seasons). If you take the advice of only watch the first 5 seasons, you will really appreciate and enjoy them and if you decide to watch the rest don’t take them too seriously and alway remember that the history in the season 6 it’s not that accurate and the history in the 7 and 8 will be totally different (except for the end, maybe).

@@Deukapi I don't think so, honestly. A lot of what went wrong with season 8 went wrong because they rushed into it and did it wrong. Martin could easily end his books with a similar conclusion (all the core plot points being the same) and it could still be a masterpiece because he'd have written it well. In other words, it's not necessarily season 8's plot points that were bad, but they had so little foreshadowing, so little build up, so little context that they came across as nonsensical. If season 5, 6, 7 and 8 as a whole were season 8 or even 10 seasons (ie, if they had time to properly develop and build up their plot points) then this wouldn't have happened.

They rushed through the story dropped a bunch of plotlines, ruined the representation of characters, killed off many characters for the sake of killing them, and lost passion for the project. That's not George's fault. D and D signed the contract knowing the series wasn't complete. Even if the story was complete I doubt they would have adapted it well. They were dropping the ball as early as season 3 with the Dorne storyline, one that is well fleshed out over three published books. They were fumbling published content and ruahing themselfs. It's no surprise, to me at least, that they fumbled unpublished content too. It was par for course.

I understand his position but at the same time, there is a limit on how long you should take between books. If he’s doing everything he can and it’s taking this long, fine. I do not feel like that’s the case. Something tells me that the delay is due to the poor reception of the show’s ending and his need to revise his original plan.

Three years later… Where is Winds of Winter!?!?!? I have been waiting a little over a third of my life for the penultimate book of the series! I loved Dance with Dragons and his other works, but I would really like to know how the main story ends.

instant gratification creating expectations? The last book was over 10 years ago, and you started over 30 unrelated projects in that time frame

@@proudsaiyanprince2651 man he does write other shit, he's not obligated to make mainline asoiaf his entire life. I get the joke but at the end of the day he doesn't owe anyone anything. You got the books you've paid for, it's not like you fuckin pre-ordered winds, it'll come out when it's done or George dies, spending a decade whining that an 75 year old man isn't writing fast enough isnt going to do anything apart from raise your blood pressure.

@@infamousgamer767 he could have written 1 page a day and completed Winds 4 years ago. You’re defending laziness and an attitude that is unprofessional. It’s embarrassing people still compare him to Tolkien.
