Everyone whining about how you don’t do reviews “right.” You’re entertaining and you demo a wide variety of pedals in a predictable and familiar way that makes it easy for long-time viewers to get a handle on the tool. Love it. I always check your channel before buying a new pedal. My TC E Afterglow, JHS 3 Reverb, and JHS 3 Fuzz were all purchased based in part on your playing.

Personnally, I'm a regular viewer of Ryan's reviews, because : - I like the fact that he's smily - I appreciate his sense of humor - I really love to hear him pulling those surfy licks out of his guitars - the contents of the vids are most of the time quite interesting, pertinent BUT let's be realistic : if you want to kind of promote a $150 pedal, do it by comparing it to more expensive pedals, in order to demonstrate that it does match up with them while being cheaper. The comparison between the Oceans11 and the Atmosphere was unfair : he blew the Atmosphere demo. He did a far better job 2 years ago there : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHbIpoR6Zs2KrNE mostly, I guess, because he took the time. Here, he should have reviewed the most complex pedals first, and finish up with the simpler ones. He was obviously becoming more and more weary to compare Goliath to several Davids, when actually it would have been more interesting (for him and for us) to compare David to several Goliaths.

Everything about this channel - from the jokes to the playing to the budget - is so relatable. I feel like other channels are for rock gods or guitar techs, but this channel is for regular old human beings. (I actually found the Oceans 11 underwhelming when I bought it a couple years ago - and broke down and got the Empress Reverb, which I love no matter how much it hurt my wallet - but am still on the lookout for a good afforable 'verb, so enjoying the comparisons.)

Most of the cheap reverbs all have this massive high frequency content which you can’t dial back. I went with the Caline Snakebite because of all the control over the actual sound of the reverb, so I can dial in bright or dark textures. I, personally, don’t need any weird settings and just want a good sounding reverb and the Caline sounds good.

It’s cool to see Ryan’s never ending search for digital spring reverb that sounds real because it’s a quest I’ve never embarked on! All my amps have built in spring reverb including a couple solid state amps, so I’ve never really used spring reverb in a pedal. My favorite spring reverbs of my amps are my fender vibrolux 68 reissue and my peavey bandit 65 (the reverb in this is surprisingly killer and the amp is cheap and underrated with a pretty nice clean channel and tweakable eq). I usually use pedals for other types of reverb and let the real spring tanks do what their supposed to.

@@zachary963 nice, I actually don’t use them that much either, but if if I do it’s from an amp. I prefer plate reverb sounds and weird modulated reverbs. I have the Joyo and what I noticed is that the Tone knob is very responsive and I tend to keep it low. If you set it too high, you start to get that high-pitched reverberation sound that is very present in this video, especially when the Mix knob is also above noon (!). You have to mind the Mod knob too as depending on the Reverb you pick it can add an extra effect that maybe you don't want. Now I'm pretty sure the Occean 11 is better overall based on what I'm hearing here, especially if you're after more "conventional" reverb sounds, but I think the Joyo is better than what this video would lead you to believe.

You said it all ; the Atmosphere is not just a Reverb pedal, it's an Ambient Reverb pedal, and channels such as Ryan Lutton and particularly Brett Kingman did pretty brilliant demos of it. That being said, the Ocean 11 is undoubtedly better, but it's also $60/70 more expensive.

I paid about $200 CAD for the Ocean's 11 and absolutely love it. I also own a Vintaverb, which cost $70 - and for almost 1/3 of the price is a pretty good replacement. The plate is really good in particular. I use the Oceans 11 or Vinta interchangeably, for certain settings - some aren't very useful. The stereo out is a really nice feature. I did notice the whine though. You had the Tone cranked the whole time - which doesnt help the weird tone. Bottom line though - Ocean's 11 is top notch.

I have several low end reverb pedals, and on the “shimmer” setting, they all place the notes of the shimmer at an unpleasant relationship with the original note, sounding discordant (literally). I'm not an affordable pedal guy necessarily. I own a lot of them but that's because I own a lot of pedals, ones from every price range. I just like pedals because I wanted them when I started playing but I had parents who didn't buy me stuff. I had to learn to play the guitar on a banjo that belonged to my grandpa. So buying a pedal for the cost of a large pizza is cool to me. But on the subject of affordable reverbs, one of the best verbs I own (and I'm a huge reverb junkie, even more than fuzz) is the Caline Snakebite. It's so refined and understated. It takes familiarity to dial in a good tone. And it's under $50. Close second goes to the Sonicake Levitate. It's a plate reverb with a digital delay each with their own controls. The dry/wet volumes are independently controllable for the delay and you can add quite a bit, but not all, of the wetness into the reverb. There seems to be a hint of modulation on the decay/feedback and it has tap tempo. And it's under $60! These pedals are on my board next to an RV-6 and DD-8, a Wampler, an HX Stomp and a bunch of other stuff many times their cost. And they earned it!

Indirectly, Ryan has done me a great service with his series of afford-a-board videos. Once I figured out that I needed to cross the hundred dollar pedal threshold, guitar life changed for the better. Now I've got too many junk pedals that I'll possibly end up giving away. This video just reinforced that for the "too-many-ith" time. Live and learn, but now I have effect pedals that I absolutely love, and they have helped me advance in my playing. For the record I've only gone over $200 once; for the Line 6 DL4 Mk 2. My sleeper $100 plus pedal is the Keeley Hooke Reverb, the (bank A) trem-verb and (bank B) pitch bending vibrato over spring reverb are both terrific effects. I didn't love the Oceans 11 in the video, but it easily crushed the cheapos and wannabes it was up against. My personal favorite reverb is the GFI System Skylar, it has the best of the reverbs from their Specular Tempus and is as close to the perfect reverb pedal as I ever expect to get. With a little bit of boost and a splash of chorus added, you're in heaven. Thank you Ryan.

I thought the Joyo was a high quality product. They've done some serious work there. I take your point about the effects but also consider them subjective. I think others might differ with you on that point and they would likely place it a couple slots higher. Also, IMO, you should have turned the trails on at _some_ point, preferably for the Spring setting. BTW, I'm grooving on that Cyclone! 3 singles with individual switches. You can get 7-way without spending for the Gilmour mod.

I think this validated my oceans purchase for $100 years ago. Great pedal. It's important imo to factor the used market in when looking at adorable Amazon pedals. Even if you buy it for $100 and sell it for worst case $60 to guitar center it was still only a $40 pedal. You don't get that with these which is fine but that means the $20 tube screamer clone makes more sense than the $60 no name shimmer reverb when you sell both for $15. I know a lot of people are serial pedal flippers and these may be more expensive for them. Good to get basic sounds you don't use much (for me a TS is that) or effects not in a multifx you have access to but want to have forever for occasional use but not great if you're spending DS1 or RAT money on a reverb that won't be permanent. As the price goes up the resale doesn't and that is the afford-a-board curse.

I think the Oceans 11 is still the best all-in-one reverb out there for the money. The spring is quite good, especially for drip. The specialty reverbs are good enough for most applications. I love playing nylon-string guitar with a little shimmer reverb with the level very low but the time quite long - it adds a "haunting" sound to even finger style hymns or Taize style music that really rounds it out. And the drippy spring is more than good enough for my surfy tendencies. It's just a darn good investment in an all-in-one reverb solution. I'd recommend it over the HoF even with all its crazy toneprint options. Good hall reverb? Check. Good drippy, surfy spring? Check. Excellent, controllable but simple shimmer? Check. Fun specialty reverbs like reverse? Check. Heck, I'd like one for my electric board and one for my acoustic board. Just a good unit!

I have the Atmosphere and an EQD Transmisser (I know it's actually an oscillating modulated delay that acts like verb but verb) The Atmosphere Spring kinda reminds me of the Rockerverb100MKII verb which I like. The Joyo is all about the modulated verbs. Forest is my fave but if you keep mix at noon and decay longer it sounds much better. Also the forest Really does sound like a morning dew wet forest, I live in one! I love that, its chorus on verb, but does conjure up a dewey and moss covered forest bouncing from tree to tree. I also also have an eq and preamp before it when playing. But the mix needs to be dialed back to sound better

Agree, particularly about the fact that the Forest mode may remind one of the atmosphere of tropical forest (let's say a south american jungle). I think the Rewind mode is the most original one, because it sets up a cosmic atmosphere. Reminds me of some scenes in the "2001 : Space odyssey" movie. That mode is to me the real "Comet" mode, the actual Comet mode is only reverb+flanger, it has nothing to do with cosmos stuff.

Hey Ryan! Thanks for the great content, as always. I've actually got a little addicted to your videos recently and I think I might have gone through most of them already. I have two questions if you or any of the other viewers might answer: 1 - you tested the Nux Atlantic a while back, but it hasn't appeared again recently. Did you get rid of it? And if so, why? 2 - I can see an Orange Micro Terror there in the back of the room. Do you have any videos testing it? Cheers!

I've only had one reverb pedal.. the pink one you have. So I can't compare to anything else. Oh and don't abuse the wiggle stick too much, I stripped out the block in 3 months on my cyclone. Had to drop a cheap Wilkinson with pop in trem. Turns out to be made better anyways.

Snake Bite sounds great for what I want it to do. QC sucks. First one DOA. Sent back. Second one sounds good for 45 seconds and then causes some sort of feedback/distortion/noise in the signal chain (thought it was a power tube going out at first). Won't give it a third chance.

I had one that did a couple of weird things, it just made noise, which wtf it’s reverb. Just the pedal off made the noise floor 10-30x’s higher minimum. Than when engaged that went up another little bit with picking up radio or some kind of interference along with making this fluctuating flange sound. Trust me that sounds better then it was.

One thing I didn't hear mention, but I hear clearly... the time-to-onset of the octave (shim) effect on the Wonderland is very fast, at about 0.2-.3 seconds, while the Oceans 11 is defaulting to about 0.7-.8 seconds. Also, the Oceans' octave has a slower ramp-up ... you can hear it running up the volume, as it were... the Wonderland almost 'slaps it on'... not quite, but it hits full volume really fast. The oceans sounds a bit more like a pipe organ when the organist brings in the upper stops on an expression pedal and the Wonderland sounds like you just pulled on the stop, full volume (sorry, Used to work at Rodgers, many decades ago).

@@60CycleHumcast it’s true. Honestly the cheapest pedals I’ve ever gone for have been boss and electroharmonix pedals, and the ehx ones usually stay firmly planted on my board. I have 12 pedals right now. All but two cost me $25 to $40. Easily the most expensive was the Oceans 11, although I did get it 15 percent off. I tried the HOF, the Mosky, TC Electronic Skysurfer, a Tom's Line, a Boss RV-5. a MXR .... and the O11's spring was just easily so much better. Since most of us who would listen to a reverb demonstration to start with are most likely looking for a good moderately priced Spring Reverb sound I think that should be the first setting you tryout instead of going through a bunch of settings that aren't the reason we came here. It's boring and monotonous that way. Plate, Hall, Room, that's not what brought me here. I want to hear the pings and the crash and the trail out, you know Surf!
