A good cheap reverb is hard to find. Electro Harmonix Oceans 11 and Digitech Polaris are my go to verbs considering I can't afford anything by Strymon, Eventide or Empress. However, for 50 bucks or less TC Electronic makes surprisingly good one function pedals including the Skysurfer reverb. In fact the 3 pedals i use the most because of how they sound and their dead simple controls are all TC Electronic. The Skysurfer reverb, Gauss tape echo and Forcefield compressor are pretty much permanent staples in my recordings for everything whether it's guitar, synths or vocals as far as bread and butter effects go. If i need a shimmer or reverse delay or chorus or fuzz I'll add those in but those 3 pedals at less than 50 bucks each are super underrated. Brand new i believe they cost 50 bucks but whenever I see any pedals from that line on sale at my local Guitar Center for like 40 or 45 bucks i scoop them up no matter what the effect is. I think there are like 12 or 15 of them altogether and of course i need the whole set but the auto swell is the one I've got my eye on. I believe it's the rarest of the line because they don't pop up that often on Reverb.

any discussion about the ethics of these affordable pedals? i assume they are manufactured in Asian sweatshops... also curious about the sourcing of the materials... i don't see how they could be profitable w/o some really questionable labor practices.

"There's no reason not to own this." - - - This is going to get buried in the 400 other remarks, so whatevs. But ... These two guys (you two guys on the off chance either of you see this) & Henning are f#cking awesome for actually demoing these things - & also for not saying "for the money" everytime. Some of these things are just plain "great" regardless of the price. In the hundreds of thousands of AliBaba specials there's of course lots of garbage - but there's some real jems. I love having a 6-pedal board that sounds good that costs the same as a "regular" overdrive (which is of course cool too). Thanks for digging through the pile on our behalf.
@neocollective

Ha, that's a great observation, saying "for the money" every time ruins a lot of these videos...who wants to watch mediocre sounding gear reviews, right ? But some snobs are more concerned with protecting their boutique ears reputation before admitting to the talent behind some affordable products.

I think the patch cables may fair better and are easy to replace or potentially repair but I am spoiled now and don’t mind spending as much on two patch cables as a Chinese fuzz box.

Ryan, your Affordaboard series has been amazing to see evolve. Perfect branding on your part. You may want to 'retire' this board and then start with "Affordaboard 21" where you start again with the shootouts on currently (2021) available pedals. Then at the end of the year compare A-20 vs A-21 boards.

You’re missing about 4 steps of post production, usually to try to calibrate recorded tone closer to the room, then factor in compression of exported audio, KZbin’s own compression, then it goes through the codex of your own pc/mobile, then your choice of speakers. We literally never hear what they hear, and no I didn’t need Mick from TPS to explain all this but I’m glad he did for the folks flexing that they ‘hear a little fizziness in the top end”.

great video to watch, seeing Josh process the innards as he listens to the tones. This series motivated me to build a affordaboard. So far it consists of Soniccake Fazy Cream(Fuzz), Outlaw effects Deputy Marshall(Distortion),Mimidi(OD), Donner Evolution(Mod square),Ammoon Pockecho(Delay and Looper), Soniccake Twiggy blues.(4 in 1)About $320 canadian.

Gee it only took two week and some of these already jacked up the prices. The Donner is now $70(makes you want to eat people) . The Cuvave jumped $15 these others are still around the same

Sorry to spoil the mystery, guys, but "Cuvávé" is defined as - A swarthy lady, whom has one leg which is at least 3 or more inches longer than the other.

First cuvave fuzz I got was glorious. I tried to buy a second as a backup and it sounded “fixed”. No bias gate shit. Booooo! Bought five more trying to find another. No dice. Dude... tell them to make them the old way! I was able to sell the ones I bought on reverb thankfully customers were happy with them.

Don't hold me to this, as I can't be certain, but .... I'm pretty sure the Donner mini pedals are mostly rebrands of the Mooer pedals ... and ... so are all of these: Amuzik Andoer (reseller with its own website ... none currently available there, but they pop up on Aliexpress sometimes?) Bonsai CNZ Cuvave iSet Koogo Kymcoco Landlord FX (comparatively expensive in shops in the UK?) Mighty Sound Neewer Playwell Rowin Sonicake Stage Right SR (Monoprice brand? but still available on other brands' sites) Stax Valeton VSN etc.

I doubt it. The Canyon is a pretty tight little machine, presumably with its own DMM emulation. Just from the video, the backwards and mod efx don't quite cut it.

Great comments from between 39.00 and 40.00, including the remark that by modern standards iconic pedals became that way, due to their availability at the time, and circumstance. This is great argument for using what you have, and not getting too hung up on perfection. I mean, there's a whole lot of signature guitars hanging on CEO'S walls that have never been played, and probably never will be.

Every time I see an affordable mini flanger with the 1 big knob, 2 small knobs and the mini toggle, I assume it's the same as Mooer e-lady. The one here does sound pretty much identical.

It's Donner, short "o" and double-n, like the reindeer. The word means "thunder". The European (Turkish actually) meat dish is a Döner (Doener), one n, long "o", pronounced the same as one who makes a contribution to a cause. And now that's something you know. Great vid, I'll be buying some pedals in the near future. 👍👍👍😃😃😃

Ok...I'm not an afforaboard kinda guy and I'll tell you why. Here's the thing...sure chips and circuits can be pretty cheap, especially when produced en masse in China. But, I don't support that. What happens is (& I've seen in in the audio gear world), is the smaller/boutique players get squeezed out as they can't compete and you end up being left with only the larger corporates or the Chinese clones (basically). It doesn't happen overnight, but it will happen as I'm watching more cheap Chinese clones begin to swamp the market & get support from some of the more popular channels such as Ryan's. I subscribe to 60 cyclehum (and Ryan is great in all his dorkiness), but affordaboard isn't my thing. I get it, we don't all have the cash to splash. But, I'd prefer to save and support people such as Josh, rather than Chinese mass produced products with nigh on slave labour. That's just me...and I won't by Chinese guitars either. I'm hearing everybody now...but what about your phone..what about this or that...well...I've drawn the line here. Some things are unavoidable others there are clear choices. I want passionate folk like Josh to flourish, not some faceless copycats. It's just horrible when years of R&D, passion and so on, just get buried by what's basically theft and nobody can do sh!t. So, yeah, I care! Right....back to the video I'm not quite half way through. Cheers fellas. 🎸🎸🎸
