OMG Mary. How I wishI had seen this a couple years ago when first getting started. Simply the best video...and even covering yes, those of us “mature girls” who in fact do have to concern ourselves with all things hard to open. How about a video showing a list of all of your comparison videos...for those of us late bloomers? Ive started down the Copic road which could take forever and frankly I find intimidating (color choices too many for a beginner.) The cost also makes me pause each time I get more (when sales, etc.) and then had to buy containers to house them. That Arteza container is simply fantastic. Anyway, congrats and please know how important your videos are to so many of us. Great use of your time AND ours!!

The name and number easily come off the touch new markers so I now cover the name and number on each marker with clear nail polish (all brands). I also use a permanent black marker to put the name and number on the side of each marker so if the caps and barrels become separated I can match them up. Like the quality and I learned I loved alcohol markers after getting a set. They were my first set of markers. Have grown ALOT since then. Enjoy, I do.

Mary, you are the Queen of Comparisons!!!!! Thank you so much for buying all the options and testing them out for us! It’s really, really appreciated! 🎉🤗❤️ I have to say that I tend to reach for watercoloring supplies when I’m coloring in my stamped images, so, I’ve hesitated spending a ton of money on alcohol markers. That said, this review is one of the most comprehensive and helpful I’ve seen on the subject! Keep up the great work! 🤗 Also, I replied to Whooo Aml below regarding her comment on wishing more markers had both the bullet nib and brush nib (and not the chisel nib) and sharing my knowledge of Altenew’s Alcohol markers so I won’t repeat it here. Thanks, again, Mary! You’re a STAR ⭐️ 🌟 💫!

I'm loving the Arteza Ever blend Markers and for a 1st timer giving the Adult Markers a Try and learning how to Blend and shade also for the 1st time and they are owning up to what they claim. They do Blend nicely but the ones quite the opposites yellow to green maybe a issue but you can get a nice blend and shade with them...and for someone just learning how. Is quite happy with them so far. I may share it once done as this is trying them for the 1st time right out of the box who never learned how to shade or blend ever so I'm giving this Adult coloring a try as my old way is the Child way and I can't wait to see the end result when done....I am learning so much through You and SuperRaeDazzle, ADCArtAttack, Jezza, Chloe Rose Art, among many others who Draw and Color and do it Well makes learning with You all so easy..Drawing maybe different story but who knows. Truly amazing Product these are. I followed how you shade and blend and I'm getting the results as you show....So thank you. and Bless the internet making this possible.

I started out with Spectrum Noir. I bought brush nibs and put them on the SN markers, but still wasn’t happy. I ended up giving them to my daughter and purchased the Copic brand. I wished more companies would make them with the brush and fine point nibs instead of the chiseled nib. I also like the option to refill the pen and have the ability to purchase individual markers. Great review; thank you.

Altenew’s alcohol markers (named Artist Markers on their website) have a brush nib and a bullet nib! I just compared the brush nibs to my Copic brush nib, and I feel like I have a little more control with Copic brush nib (Copic has slightly less give). The bullet nib on the Altenew marker is a slightly finer line than on Copic’s bullet nib. The blend looks exactly the same to me. Plus side on Altenew is that the markers come in set of 4 blending colors just like their inks. They are $3.75/pen if you buy a pack of 3 sets (12 markers) or $4/pen if you buy a pack of 4. Not as cheap as Mary’s options, but half price of Copic retail prices. (dickblick.com had best Copic price today at $5.85/pen and Jet Pens was $6.50/pen for Copic. Retail price for Copic is now $8/pen). So, if you like the bullet nib and brush nib on the same pen, Altenew is a great option! Altenew’s Artist Markers are refillable and also have replacement nibs. Also, Altenew offers periodic sales on all their products, including these markers, so price could be lower if you buy in sale!

Shelly P that’s good to know. I purchase the Copic Caio markers from Merriartist.com which are about 3.90 per marker. Sometimes I buy the Sketch which are $5.85 if they don’t have the color I need but normally try to get the Caio which has brush and chisel.

Great review as always. I have been really happy with my Chameleon markers. I can get re-inkers, but also importantly new bullet nib and new brush tips. They are a learning curve, understanding how to attach them and use the on nib blending. But it’s fun to take a red, stick on the blue topper and then color a flower getting a range from blue to purple to red. Not cheap, I first ordered the Anna Griffin set and set of toppers off HSN,because I use a lot of her color palette. However they are readily available other places like amazon in different sets.

Thank you for this and your other review of budget brands. After a pandemic job loss and then new job (at a much reduced salary) I have been looking for budget alternatives for my art/craft activities. Your videos are so informative and I’ll be grabbing one of your color charts which I know will make it much easier to blend colors...great idea for those! I really wanted some of the Ohuhu brush tip markers, but at 41 cents each for the bullet tip in 200 colors, I’m opting for more colors now. For my current needs, the bullet will work (and doesn’t seem to fray as quickly as the brush tip). Hopefully replacement tips will be a future offering :-)

I absolutely agree w/get a cheap set to see if you like alcohol markers, but an exremely good option, that'sMUCH cheaper than copic, is spectrum noir,or Dick Blick'smarkers tons of colors, replaceable nibs, and well done numbering system, I highly reccomend them, I would also add, that w/copics to really be able to try & practice blending, you need to get a few in the same color family (i.e.a light, medium and dark shadeof reds, blues or greens for instance) and shop around alot, jet pens.com has consistantly had the best prices I've seen on all types of markers & pens, last thing I would consider is that w/the cheaper markers, you can't buy single replacements, or refil themso when one runs out, you'd have to buy the whole setagainto replace it, with copics or spectrum, you can do both (not sure about dick blick or arteza)I should also add that spectrum noirs are really, really hard to open

Thanks so much LIsa, this is super helpful information for all of us. I would add that if you do start off cheap and turn out loving it then you can pick up a higher quality one in that same color family that you ran out of. I have most of the Spectrum Noir markers, and they are difficult to open, but it also gives me the assurance that they are tightly closed & won't dry out. A few of them are so hard to open that the actual nib comes off instead of just the cap. I'm glad to get your opion of the Dick Blick, but I knew they had alcohol markers, but didn't know anything about them.

MARY! I needed this video sooooo badly. I have been flailing around with one here another there. At 64, I have hand issues, but I’ve found a small round/square toit (for those that don’t know, a round toit is a piece of rubber used for opening jar lids) helps me get the top off easily. I tend to like starting out with a set. I do have full set syndrome , did you know it’s a subset of craft supply hoarding disease? I have a bit of both. I have several hundred dollars worth of beading supplies, that i cannot use at this time because of a failed cataract surgery. They are still trying to decide what to do. But I cannot let go of my beads and wire. Plus I may be limited to larger work for a while.. You’ve brought me hope, and that’s all I can ask for. Bless you Mary❣️🙏🏼

Thank you for spending the time and money to review. I have the Shin Han Touch markers, some COPIC and some Altenew. I didn’t know enough when I first went looking and stupidly got a set of the Touch because they were cheaper and there weren’t any Altenew or other brands available. The set didn’t have light, medium or dark of different colours so that meant shading was limited unless I got more. My other issue with the Shin Han is that although they are refillable, the refills are not available in Hong Kong, which I don’t understand and the company doesn’t have a reason why. Now my next challenge is learning how to use them properly.

Great review...I like the masters set...the price, the colors and the brush tip. I'm also an Arteza fan, but I think I will wait and see if they come out with more colors. I own the complete line of Spectrum Noir, plus their Colorista markers and almost the complete line of Copics. I bought a set of 12 of the touch new in warm grays and they are awesome. I did change out my nibs on the spectrum noir. I removed the chisel and added the brush. However, this was extremely expensive, even getting the nibs at half price. I don't recommend it unless you have the money. But, it is nice having a bullet and a brush. I wish companies would make marker sets with those 2 nibs. I never use the chisel, so it's a waste for me. Thanks again for the review, it was great!

Thank you for doing this for us. I have a variety of alcohol markers (Stampin Up, Spectrum, and Copic). My original set of 36 was Copic, which had a brush nib at the time. I really like the brush nibs more than the bullet, but that's a personal preference. I feel all three of these blend well, but the Copic are smoother. Glad to see there are alternatives out there when I need to replace or add on.

Mary, another great video. I colored on Avery labels and had a punch the size of the tops of my Master Markers caps. So I swatched then out and stuck them to the end of the brush nib cap. So it serves two purposes, a color swatch and it indicates the brush nib side 😄 You did a wonderful job reviewing all these different types of markers. Oh Master Markers has a skin tone set that can be purchased separately on Amazon but those colors are included in the set A and B. Great review! Best one I've seen. I have the full set of Spectrum Noir. I bought several of the 6 piece sets at first. Then, after I knew I loved them, I bought all of the 24 piece sets. So I have 170 markers. They can be very, very difficult to open. Sometimes, as Laura Beuhler mentioned in a previous comment, the entire cap and nib come off! That's frustrating. But I like that they do have the line on the end to identify the pen like end. After doing some research, it is recommended that the markers be stored on their side...laying flat. I purchased the unit that holds them all...and I've never had one dry up. I've had them almost 3 years and use them all the time. Well...one dried up. But that's because one of my granddaughters didn't put the cap on completely :-) If I didn't own any alcohol markers and was looking to get decent markers at a great price...your video would really help doing so! Thanks. But then, I love ALL your videos! Keep 'em coming!!

Thanks for the informative comparisons. It was really helpful. I have a slightly different question, it is about the color charts and the printer you use. The printer I used to have I had to calibrate it often, and even then, the color printed didn't always match the screen. They didn't match the marker either without checking the marker, adjusting, and doing this over and over until the color was closer. So what printer are you using and what ink and do you have any comparisons on printers?

Oh I wish I could be helpful here but I never printed my color charts after they were colored in. I printed blank charts and then used my markers to color in. I think the shades are too vast for my printer to catch them all.

I have other Arteza products and love them...the fine liner pens and the watercolor brush pens. Having quite a few copics. (Was careful when to buy them as Carpe Diem runs sales on them which made them more affordable).I did not venture into the Arteza alcohol markers and it is good they have expanded their color options. Glad you reviewed these markers and they are especially great for watching your budget). I don't think you can just replenish a specific marker color, though, if it runs out and wish they would at some point add that option as many times there are certain colors that are used more frequently. Just wanted to throw out that little observation. Again, thank you for your videos. Have been binge watching you, by the way!!!

I was with a friend this weekend and she found two sets at Tuesday Morning and we tried them when we got home. I was quite impressed with the smooth feel of them. And saying that you would think they wouldn’t dry out but several of mine have. I am sooo disappointed because I couldn’t afford the Copic price tag and got these instead. As someone said in the comments that this craft/ hobby is not an inexpensive hobby, because it is pricey. When we buy something we want it to last s long time. I’m still not sure if I will go the alcohol marker route again. Also I totally agree with the crafters (not professional designers) that the chisel end is almost useless. Great video, Mary! I've always marked my markers with 1 certain washi tape (black with white polka dots) and when I do it, I put the washi on the brush side end. Wanted to post that idea in case it might help someone else. I have Copic, Blick Studio Brush, Ohuhu, Masters Touch, Altenew, Bianyo and a few of the "new style" Illustrator markers. Im literally on the edge of my seat waiting on the pastels to be released! With everyone that uses Ohuhu markers, I wish SOMEONE would do a color combo series. Like the light, medium and dark for each color family. I've swatched my markers, but when you have several hundred markers, trying to find good bendable shades is a pain! All I can ever find is Copic combos - and that's no help! I PREFER my Ohuhu markers over my Copics and reach for them constantly. I have the bullet tips and the brush tips and they are both wonderful! Do you keep all of your markers together in color families or do you have them split apart based on brands? Mine are all together - all reds together, all oranges together, etc... please marker fairy let's do some color blends! 😆

I love alcohol markers and have all the Stampin' Up! Blends and LOVE them! I also have some Firefly brand alcohol markers that are nice-OK. I was coloring with my 12 year old granddaughter using my Blends and Firefly markers and we were enjoy the ease of coloring and blending. Then I realized how much it would cost to replenish my alcohol Blends $4.50 each plus tax and decided to go buy some regular markers for her to use since she is kinda rough using them. Oh my gracious what a difference between alcohol markers and regular pigment markers!!!! No comparison since regular markers will pill up your paper and not blend at all. So, I believe I will buy these lower cost alcohol markers which are comparable to the higher end and higher cost Copics and Blends. I love my Blends, but I want more color varieties as well as to save money where I can. Thank you for the review. I wish Arteza had come out with their alcohol markers last year when I spent $200 on lots of their art products. I'd have bought the alcohol markers first for sure!

Hi. I just stumbled upon this channel as i have recently bought several different brands as an alternative to copic's. I have come to the comments before watching this whole video. I saw that you have a comment on firefly brand. This is one of the brands I just found and wanted to see how they compare to copic. I don't know if you have Tuesday morning stores where you live. I am in northern California and I just found chameleon brand as well as firefly brand at Tuesday morning stores. I bought both. The firefly brand was a set of 24 for less than $20. For my personal purpose, they work pretty well. However the copic refill cartridge is what I use over the copic marker itself so i know i will still be buying the copic brand refill cartridges in the future. I just wanted to tell you where I found firefly brand for really cheap in the event you would like to enjoy them with your grand daughter in the future over regular markers.

Just bought the Master Markers for my daughter, of course I had to take a swipe at them. IMO you CAN buy set A as a single set and be OK. For example, the grays are split up between sets. I forget exactly which set had which, but grays 1, 3, 5, 7 were in Box A, and grays 2, 4, 6, 8 were in Box B. That pattern repeated itself. Here is the problem - buying both was so much more economical than buying just one box so we had to go for it to get that decent discount. So far, no regrets, boxes arrived undamaged, all markers we checked were juicy, colors were explosively vibrant. Downside = I've never used Copics, but I can tell just from watching videos, the Copics have a finer nib, so you can color into a much tighter space with the Copic. Also, at this point in time, Ciao's are only a little more than twice as expensive in the big set of 72 markers. The Master Markers colored and blended excellently, nibs had finesse, Copic Ciaos seem to be in reach if you have patience to save. All the best.

I know you put in that disclaimer about how not everyone can or wants to buy Copics, but I still want to add this information: Copics are very easy to find second hand! Search eBay or Facebook marketplaces. Since the nibs are replaceable and the ink refillable, there's nothing wrong with buying them used. Also, Shinhan touch twin brush markers are slightly cheaper than Copics and just as good. The cheap touchnew/ touch/ touch twin markers that you'll find everywhere are knock offs of the Shinhan markers. They're refillable and the nibs are replaceable.

Great question. I get really good results with both so its gonna come down to a few things to split hairs in my opinion. Ohuhu are less expensive, and easier to travel with. Arteza has a great company, awesome carrying case, and hopefully soon they will sell replacements individually. If you're choosing between 80 Ohuhu and 60 Arteza, go for Ohuhu because of color choice. If you are going for 120 Arteza, then first bit of advice might help.

Ohuhu has never heard of the "Colour Wheel!" They should include the three primary colours plus Green according to the Colour Wheel in each set. They never seem to have a full set, the put out 200 and have a 48 set of pastel colours that have never been in any set before coming out soon. They should concentrate on putting together a good set of colours several degrees apart with no duplicates, and names on markers. Intelligent colour names would be nice they have one colour named "Runk." I have been unable to connect this with any colour the definition I have found is, "a runk is a hybrid of a raccoon and a skunk." All they don't do makes it difficult for those with many markers to handle properly and with ease. All who have problems with Ohuhu or any markers should complain direct to the company. @@marypolancodesigns I honestly don't think too much money. They just are interested in putting out as many markers as possible. Every tint and shade of every colour. They could honestly be a reasonable, affordable rival to Copic, we don't expect them to be archival, but build a decent basic set, you have the markers! Select the tint and shades you want to keep in a set of say 150. Try very hard to get the caps to be colour coded, you already had the names on the markers put them back. If they had open stock they would make money on people constantly buying, at a greater price than in each set, individual markers. What they are offering on their website at the current time have markers at $2 to $3 US. They could on occasion issue individual sets such as the pastels etc. As you said they are good markers add a bit of class.
