it baffles me how no company could come up with an affordable punch bar in the last 20 years of internet.

There is a company that makes one, Art Color Punch from Japanese company Sankisha, pretty cheap when you buy direct , don't buy from ebay where people sell them at four or five times the original price.I'd post the address of the shop in Tokyo that sells it but youtube blocks do comment when I do.

@@mrtea7562 maybe you can share the official address instead of a link? In a format when we're sending letters. What is the approximate price btw? found some in rakuten and other sites ranging around 24000-30000 yen. (160-190$)

This is fantastic. I do CG animation, and my son wants to learn to animate and I wanted to teach him the way I was taught, on paper. I've also been keeping an eye out for a home solution to this since school days, where we had the old ACME hole punch. I was googling around recently and saw a badge punch which got me thinking. Stumbling on this video, thanks for proving it does work!

Oh, nice find! There's also those yellow, Japanese paper punches that pop up on eBay from time to time, but their cost plus import duties is still pretty expensive (but still way less than $1000s). In regards to cost vs. time, I think the paper contributes to that too if you want to work on the standard 12/16 field paper size. I ended up buying a large roll of paper to cut to size, and after a while of that (it's possible to slice in bulk with a sharp enough scalpel) I began to question the idea. It's easy for the alignment to get out of whack too. But, rolling paper is excellent for making long, pan-shot layouts.

@@neefofway8746 That's exciting! I've had some issues getting it going. I'll say that I cannot stress enough making sure it's all the way in, lined up, and that your guide is straight and adjusted to the right measurement. Make sure you check with each punch. I have punched like 40 sheets that wouldn't fit. Sometimes flipping the paper on the other side works better. No idea why when it's supposed to be symmetrical.

I had seen people make 3d printed pegbars with 3 circle holes so regular hole punchers would work.
@MLPWritingIsMagic3 жыл бұрын
It's a good idea. The original Disney pegbars were like that. Animators didn't like them though because you had to be careful when putting your pages on and off or you'd tear them. Maybe the 3d print designers made better clearances. I had thought of using this for teaching underserved kids animation, accounting for what tools they'd have. If I 3d printed the pegs then I could deliver it to them. A few people have brought up the 3 hole punch, which is good, but this hack is for the ACME standard. There are many reasons people still want the ACME standard. For instance owning an animation disc or an old layout desk.

These instructions are for what's called an "ACME Peg Bar." It's so standard for animation that even just looking up "Animation Peg Bar" will get the results. Blick Art Supplies sells it on their website. Of course it's also on Amazon. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the idea! Are the long holes easy to fit over the peg bar? I would like to understand if the thickness of the long holes is really 1/8 inch. The fact is that I found such a hole punch on sale in Russia. The dimensions in the description are as follows: the round hole corresponds to 6.4mm (i.e. 1/4 inch), and the size of the long hole is 3x14mm. But 1/8 inch is about 3.2mm, not 3mm. I'm a little puzzled))
@MLPWritingIsMagic2 жыл бұрын
With this I've had more of an issue of the holes being snug. So they're a little tight on the pegbar. I've also had offical ACME punched machines that were a little loose. Might be a margin for error in manufacturing. I haven't had problems animating or aligning regardless. It's common practice to have a rubberband on the pegbar to keep the paper from lifting up. May help to keep the pages aligned as well.
@rsserg2 жыл бұрын
@@MLPWritingIsMagic Yes apparently even deviations in fractions of a millimeter matter. Great! Never heard of using a rubberband before. Thank you for the useful information.

I don't really expect you to reply to a comment on a video that's over 2 years old at this point, but I was wondering if you had any tips on finding sheets of cellulose acetate for use in cel animation. I can't seem to find them in bulk anywhere for anything close to a reasonable price.

here's a tip don't use that ruler that comes with the puncher! instead create your first template paper (using regular printing paper) using an acme peg bar round or acme (the type don't matter this works in principles not in what you got so you know is good and can be related it to anything of the sort!) then on the template paper all you need to do is measure or find the center of the paper and draw a line straight down horizontal with a ruler should be 5 and a half inches for regular printing paper then align that line the center of the acme peg bar which is the round peg align it as best you can you only need to do this part once and do the same for the other side rectangle pegs draw in a line in the center of each peg and then align the lines with the lines on the hole puncher now do the same for each peg and presto you got yourself an acme paper type style with perfect holes! you don't need that little ruler that comes with the hole puncher for this it's actually annoying to use or get's in the way!!
@MLPWritingIsMagic2 жыл бұрын
I think if you don't use many pages this is a good way to avoid the flimsy ruler, but measuring each punch is going to drain your time and is more prone to mistakes. The L bend on the ruler keeps your stack of pages aligned. The ruler isn't so bad if you're punching 100 pages at a time.
@applepretz53684 жыл бұрын
Yo how did you get yours so straight? The way I got it punched, it fits a little funky
@MLPWritingIsMagic4 жыл бұрын
Punching more sheets at once helps. You really have to make sure there is no paper jammed underneath. You really need to make sure it's straight at the business end.
