When I was 6 my cousin crashed at our house after an AFI show in Oakland. I remember being at her waist and looking up at her in black leather with white and black makeup, purple liberty spikes a foot from her head. I’ll never forget that. Back in the day when Davey was rockin' the devilock. He was asked to replace Michael Graves in the Misfits after MG left - and Davey had the most punk answer: "Only if Danzig asks me himself". In truth - he just cared about AFI too much for other commitments and was likely honored. But that is still a respectable and frankly, badass answer.

you think that's punk? that guy's a poser, a Danzig wannabe with his fake devilock. He thinks he's something special and that Glenn would directly ask him to front for the Misfits? I went to the filming of this video in Santa Monica. It was an awesome day being together with a couple hundred people, give or take, if I'm recalling correctly (may have been less); all there for AFI. They filmed almost all the band playing alone while we waited outside in line, then they started shooting the other parts with fans in the shots and then back out to wait. I took my younger brother, a couple of his friends, and a coworker of mine. The last time they brought us back outside to wait again as they set up for the different shots, I managed to "mesh" my way inside as they were closing the doors and brought my whole group with me. We got to kick it with the whole band, played pool, spoke to Adam and Davey a bit. They were all incredibly nice and friendly. It was an incredible day. I can't imagine how cell phones would've ruined everything (granted it's cool to document things like that), but looking back I'm so glad it was the way it was. This track isn't even my favorite from the album, and actually for me, this album was the beginning of a huge shift for the band's identity. We understood though; was seeing them before Hunter joined and knowing how many shows they had done just up to that point let alone when they "blew up" it was understandable that with new financing/management and mega production they weren't going to be around the EastBayHardCore sound anymore really. Although I love Black Sails it is also a sad point of no return for me personally. I had a couple of other really cool interactions with Adam and Davey long before this filming day too at The Roxy and at a club at The Standard on Sunset. Super down-to-earth cool guys. Thank you to all of them for the great memories.

I’ve never really been a fan of punk or it’s derivative forms (I’ve always been more into heavy metal) but this song and many others by Davey and Co. were the soundtrack of my youth back in the early 2000’s as a long-haired kid in his late teens getting into the alternative rock/metal scenes and rebelling. This song really connected us youth of the time, it was such a song that sent us a message that it was cool to be different and to do what you felt right to you in terms of expression and finding yourself.
@markshadows36679 жыл бұрын
So funny to me that so- called older fans consider this a "more manly " Davey. He's wearing freaking lipstick. I think AFI had one if the worst fan bases ever in the scene. If they supposedly "sold out" then why are they less popular than back in these days? So ridiculous. I've seen this band ten times since the 90s and they still put on amazing shows. So glad they have matured and grown musically. Too bad those older fans couldn't do the same.
@anneke069 жыл бұрын
Amen!
@JohnSmith-jq8rv9 жыл бұрын
You understand nothing. Davey Havok was considered more masculine BEFORE this era of his career and yes they did sell the fuck out. It began during their Sing the Sorrow days and ever since their music took a steep decline in favor of attempting to appeal to a larger fan base so they could sell more records. Obviously it wasn't sustainable and ultimately an awful decision as no one gives two shits about whatever AFI does anymore because of how poor their music became. Furthermore tell me how a song like Love Like Winter or Beautiful Thieves (prime examples of them selling out) is an example of "maturing and growing musically". Don't make me fucking laugh...

I first heard this song when I was 13 or so. To me, it was always about being an outsider and discovering a place where you could be yourself ("and nothing could touch us then... nothing could change us then... nothing could hurt us then...") Maybe a music club they played at (which has long been speculated) but could also be metaphorical, like a state of mind and comfort with oneself. Around this time, I was just getting into alternative / rock / metal music. I also had no interest in drinking or drugs so Davey Havok was an amazing influence for me... He gave a lot of kids the confidence to be themselves.

I remember when I was told of story of crushed velvet Candle wax, and dried up flowers The figure on the bed All dressed up in roses, calling Beckoning to sleep, offering a dream Words were as mystical as purring animals The circle of rage, the ghosts on the stage appeared The time was so tangible, I'll never let it go Ghost stories handed down reached secret tunnels below No one could see me I fell into yesterday Our dreams seemed not far away I want to, I want to, I want to stay I fell into fantasy Words were as mystical as purring animals The circle of rage, the ghosts on the stage appeared The time was so tangible, I'll never let it go Ghost stories handed down reached secret tunnels below No one could see me

"Why did they change?" "What happened?" Simple. They wanted to change. The band changed because that is what they wanted to do. I don't know their reasons any better than anyone else. New creative options? Boredom? Just for fun? It doesn't matter. They are artists and they do what they want. As long as people are willing to pay them for it they will continue to do whatever they want. Accept it. Why would you want the band to do something they didn't want to do anyways?

Sid TheFilthyBastard can't trust your opinion when you don't even know Davey's name. I heard them myself, and he sounds pretty damn close to how he used to. Obviously his voice developed with age, but he still sounds great.

Cody Norton I saw AFI on Sept 15, 2014 at the Hollywood Bowl. AFI sound the same. Davey hit every note.
