You should clean the Pistons up before pushing them back into the caliper. No grease on the pin through the pads. It attracts dirt and gums up.
@peterroth2129

Good advice. Put the pistons out slightly (so don't empty the reservoir too early, otherwise air gets into the system. Then clean the pistons with water and a mild detergent. Don't use break cleaner close to the rubber seals.

Thank you for this video! I installed rear brakes on my 2017 Africa Twin (manual transmission) today. The Honda manual I have does not remove the 6mm Allen Headed bolt and recommends that you slide the pads in by pivoting the caliper foreword insuring proper landing of the lower notch in its forward position as shown in the view hole during your video. This worked fine until the anti-rattle spring dropped out of the upper caliper internal box/notch/hole and, because of its appearance, it became clear to me that it has a specific orientation, an orientation which can not be seen even with my flashlight! So I removed the Allen bolt and then could see, due to dirt/discoloration, the image of its correct orientation in the caliper. Crisis averted!

Good video, but if you haven't added any bake fluid to the system there's no need to open the reservoir. As you said, it's the exact same amount that was in it from the factory. I'm debating on whether or not to do mine. I need tires too! I just don't feel like installing tires and brakes in my garage when it's 100+ outside. But I also HATE paying 120 an hour for labor!
@WOODZMAN

But you also push the caliper back further than it was. I would rather be safe.

@@WOODZMAN When the bike was new, the amount of fluid was the same, and the brake pads were new. No need to open the reservoir. I've done it several times on my other motorcycles, and it never was the case. I'm also a bicycle mechanic, and on bikes the hydraulic disc brakes work in exactly the same manner. Again, no need to remove the fluid.

I really wonder why it is needed to suck some fluid out of the reservoir, because the brakes where also new back in time. So there would be room enough.
@WOODZMAN
@WOODZMAN 3 жыл бұрын
You don’t have to most of the time but if you push the piston back to far the fluid can run over.

There are thin stainless clips or what u call them, on each of the pads, should they not be transferred over to the new ones?

Could you explain why did you take off hydrolic lubricant?

I take it off to keep so when I push the calipers back in it don’t push brake fluid out the top and make a mess
@bodrummotosikletscooter3426
@bodrummotosikletscooter3426 6 жыл бұрын
I am sure that you don't need this process. This process will be caused the brake system to get some air... never follow this process if there is not too much hydraulic fluid in the brake system by mistake!
@WOODZMAN
@WOODZMAN 6 жыл бұрын
Lol your funny, as your brakes wear down the reservoir will get lower and if you don’t add some fluid then you can get air in the system. Mainly if you lay the bike over. I have worked on motorcycles for 38 years so I do know what I am talking about.

I could see the reason for removing a little brake fluid if the brake fluid was changed or topped up when the pads were quite low. In these circumstances, when adding new pads pushing the pistons back could cause the fluid to spill so removing a little beforehand is worthwhile.
