You're not wrong, but you have the order backwards. There's a reason we put so much music under the umbrella of "Afro-Cuban" - you're hearing common musical ancestry between Songo and Afrobeat/Highlife.

I'm Brazilian and I was very, very happy when the interviewer asked him for an artist to be inspired by African music and he recommended fellow musician Seu Jorge. I don't know if you know, but Brazil is in South America, but the richness of African music is so great that he nominated a Brazilian musician, although Africa is so rich in great musicians. Thank you Drumeo for bringing this guest and I would like to recommend that fellow drummers listen to the Brazilian drummer Kiko Freitas.

Seu Jorge is an extraordinary artist. Panamericafrica, mano. Muito Axè!

Of course, everybody knows Kiko Freitas in France ! (kidding). I'm a fan of Joao Bosco, and I'm very impressed by his musicians. But his partido alto is quite difficult, and most drummers in Europe or USA don't play the samba with the right feel (I include myself), because you must play the pandeiro and listen to real Brazilian music, not Steve Gadd.

At 5:17 he did the one thing every human should do when you slip up in life and drop a stick: laugh and grab another one. No one is impervious to mistakes; it's those slight imperfections that make us human. Amazing drummer.

Amazing drumming! I love African rhythms- they're everything: funky, rocking, chill, intense, driving, laid back, jazzy, soulful, hip hop roots, and so forth. Love the sound of this kit too. So many patterns, techniques, beats, fills, sounds, grooves, and approaches to learn here. It's fucking great.

At 5.16 counter there seems to be some kind of failed drum stick trick. Actually what I think what happened was that his grip was so loose and relaxed that very moment , all while he was phrasing absolutely wonderful right hand sweeps on the toms as melody counter part to the rest of his limb's beat playing, that the stick came free of his hand and he then very impressively co ordinated his right hand to recapture that flailing stick thus rescuing it for continued use and all the while never loosing a beat! It looked like a stick trick but when , and out of disbelief, I re watched found that his stick came loose during a sweeping technique he was using to execute his tom melody and he rescued the stick live and in the moment instead of letting it drop and reaching for another that was holster next to him. Very cool and honest moment that , upon further inspection, is super impressive and fun to re watch over. Great spirit in this guys playing and approach to set playing and music all together. Glad I watched, and re watched!

Absolutely fabulous class!! Is there a class with multiple sessions for Tosin's African Drum Set? I am a pro Djembe player who lived in Senegal during the 90's and spent the last 35 years of my life steeped in these rhythms and especially in their origins as African Dance Percussion (Djembe, Bougarabou, Sabar, Siko, Kpanlogo, Ewe-Gahu, Ashiko, ........so much more).

Quite a long ago, someone asked in the comments if you could make a video where you show the real sound of the drums, without all sound processing behind. Like raw drum, sounding natural, as if we were the drummer of the video. Jared answered that it could be interesting. So do you plan to make it ? :) Thank you for reading ! (btw thank you for the lesson, awesome video as always, Tosin Aribisala has such a great groove !)
@DrumeoOfficial7 жыл бұрын
I still like that idea. Its just hard to give you something that is "unprocessed". We'd have to work to make it sound that way as there is no way to not process it when we take an analog signal and run it into digital channels, then upload to KZbin where they also add compression. So nothing would be as natural as you just coming to Drumeo and listening to the kit! :-)

OH man it makes so much sense that you played for Femi Kuti. I was turned onto Fela (somehow I knew Tony Allen without ever knowing Fela? Maybe that's just innate.) by a friend like 4 years ago and whoa baby. But yeah, that's where you start. My favorite single song is "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" on Roforofo Fight but your mileage may vary. Gentleman (song and album) would be next I think.

I love this lesson so much. The rhythm section in a lot of western music (aka white people music, which I am) feels so "straight" and predictable. There's just something about African drumming that immediately makes you bob your head. It's like having a conversation, or water moving down a stream. It's so fluid.

African and Afro-Cuban have similar patterns. Afrobeat is Fela. (Tony Allen) Afrobeats is the other popular genre in most Nigerian music videos. The latter is heavily 2,3 clave or 3,2 claves. Others may use a soca variation. Then there's makossa variations used also. There's Nigerian fuji music which is also more difficult as you have to mimic a talking drum.
