1. Don't worry about matchups in terms of x character does well against y character. that doesn't matter at all until you're at a very high level. Learn what your character can do against each character 2. Go to training mode and learn at least all of the moves in the "main techniques." It will be way better in the long run to learn how to do the moves yourself. The special style will make you plateau quickly 3. Learn all of the different ways you can wake up off the floor. There's many videos online that list all of the options, but they all have strengths and weaknesses 4. Choose one character and commit to learning them. Jumping between too many characters at the beginning will not allow you to improve at a steady pace. 5. Tekken is hard. Don't put the pressure of winning all the time on yourself. Allow yourself to lose a lot, but always learn from it Edit: clarified the first point

I would argue that knowing what is the "gameplan" and most prominent moves of each character is important, but that can be done 1 at a time with the replay system. Play against a character, and if you get knowledge checked just go to the replay of that match and study it, they even give a lot of resources now to help you.

Mentality is also a big part of playing at ur best so working on not getting tilted fast is probably a good idea most people overlook or struggle with it too so if u work on it u can get that down u could make people tilt and play bad as a game plan

Also note on No. 4. You need to diligently choose a character to learn as a beginner. It needs to be simple and not that gimicky. Avoid Yoshimitsu and Kuma if possible

Hey Afro some tips here 1) To block you dont need to hold back or diagonally back down. You can block High and Mid attacks by not touching your movement stick, Lows need to be blocked by holding Down (Just down no diagonal) 2) Throws can be teched by watching which hand leads the throw, its fast but One Hand will be the most visible when throwing. If it leads with the left hand you press square if its the right hand you press triangle 3) I dont recommend playing in specialty mode, from my knowledge its essentially the same combo for whatever button you press. It can make it easy for the enemy player to block your attacks. Plus youll have a better understanding of your chosen character 4) Learn to be patient and block any attack string and STRIKE the moment you see an opening. This doesnt necessarily mean attack the moment their combo ends because they can stagger jabs and different multi hit attacks after a combo. Thats why you need to be patient and block, learn your enemies habits. 5) Grabs and High attacks can be avoided by ducking (holding STRAIGHT down) some grabs are Mids so ducking can put you into a state to be grabbed so its always good to remember to sidestep or back off if you feel they may grab 6) Neutral is the name of the game, Win the Neutral to earn your turn and combo them to death! Poke them until they have no health You got this and remember NEVER GIVE UP!!!!! Edit: After reading the comments I realized holding back is better for blocking so block back and diagonally. I'm learning and new too so I appreciate the advice guys!

Great advice, if I could add something minor….. -when you get downed, understand there are multiple ways to get back up and use that to your advantage. Just because you’re down doesn’t mean to instantly get back up, sometimes it helps to wait a second or two. Especially if your opponent is being highly aggressive. Sometimes when you take a second they take a second so take advantage of that second
@arashiryuu1624
@arashiryuu1624 7 ай бұрын
Point 1 was bad advice, neutral guard is garbage and will get you dropped, if you intend to block standing you absolutely should hold back. Expanding point 2, some command throws can be broken by pressing both the square and triangle buttons together, but for King's chain throws you typically only need to pick what part of the chain you want to break and identify what button breaks that part, classic example being spamming triangle when he tries to lock your arm behind your back will get you out of the rolling death cradle and save you from huge damage. Would also dispute point 5 saying to hold straight down for ducking, down-back is the fastest and most reliable way to both duck and guard against lows.
@mildcomedy9865
@mildcomedy9865 7 ай бұрын
To expand on what somebody else said, always block lows diagonally as doing this will help you get out of moves such as King's alley kick.

Some tips from a player who's played since T3: -Ofc pick characters that you really like or are drawn to -Every single Mishima (Kazuya, Jin, Devil Jin) has a weakside, which is their left. Sidestep left and you can overcome a big advantage with that. (Not too sure about Reina since she's new) -Jumping in this game is a no-no, don't do it early on until you learn a bit more about delayed hop-kicks -Learn your characters main moves, aka OP moves that they have that will give you a big advantage. (Example: Jin's 4 on hit connect will allow you to use his 1+2 heat engager immediately) -Try to learn juggles/staple combos. These will be the main thing you want to focus on as a newer player. -You can assign buttons to more moves, such as your back buttons assigned to LP+RP/1+2 or any singular button. This makes doing certain moves and stances WAY easier. -Holding back is to guard. Use it. -Have fun most of all, getting frustrated will only lead to more mistakes. And sometimes you need to take a step back or a break to get better. -If you're planning on learning King, Lil Majin is your go to guy. Good Luck on the grind everyone 👍

King is one of those characters where when you're fighting him he feels unstoppable, but when you play him you realize that using him effectively requires a lot of good timing and patience. Not the most complicated character by far, but there's an underappreciated skill to using him.
@JimboCruntz
@JimboCruntz 7 ай бұрын
I’ve always found if you’re good with king and know a few of his moves and grapple strings you can beat a lot of people. I’d say a lot of low to mid rank players can’t deal with it as they don’t understand how to break grabs and just panic. Once you get to the higher tiers where people really know what they’re doing it immediately becomes even harder to get wins. There’s a definite wall to break through with King.

He has gimmicks in the form of throws and some weird attacks and unblockables BUT he is popular so people get to know how to play against it and also he is better played with players that shows restraint with delving into those tools because those are not the strongest and Can be telegraphed and countered easily

King was my first main and got him to purple ranks in Tekken 7, and I can say no he doesn't require anywhere near as much timing and execution as other characters. And especially at low levels, his throws and chain throws are just staight up broken, so I always refrained from using them cuz I just felt like a bitch

Afro, while the special controls might seem good for beginners. It will only take you so far before you start getting bodied by more experienced players. You gotta learn the inputs on your own You will become very easy to read and you’ll just be doing the same moves over and over with little variation. As well as the auto combos the game gives you are very basic and are not the most damaging combos. One more small note: There are 1 of 3 ways to break a grab depending on said grab. A 1 break: Pressing square A 2 break: Pressing triangle Or. A 1+2 break: Pressing square and triangle at the same time. Hope this helps! Learning Tekken by no means is an easy task and it takes people months to even get decent at the game so don't get discouraged. Keep at it, learn the combos and the punishes and you'll slowly improve.

The timing of when you push buttons matter. THE DIRECTION of where you're moving + which buttons you push also matter. If you just keep pushing square and triangle and circle over and over again you'll never get it anywhere. Tekken has a ton of defensive options. Ducking, Jumping, Sidestepping, Parrying, Blocking, Korean Backdash. If you block more and sidestep (3d game), youll have more success. Try to master your movement. This is a 3d game. Youll be surprised how much sidestepping just destroys people. Or learning how to korean backdash to make your opponent overextend. Fang is my personal favorite character. I recommend him to everyone. King is fun. But he is all about chain grabbing people, once you learn how to break his chain grabs he's much less effective and you have to go for more guaranteed damage. If you go into training mode and set king to grab you with his special grabs you can break 90% of them by mashing 1, 2 or 1+2. You can also duck some of his grabs. Law is really basic, I personally haven't watched enough gameplay to know exactly how good law is. But hes the bruce lee clone. You hit it right on the noggin, when it comes to tekken, matchups are a big Factor in that regard. There are so many characters and every character has so many different interactions with everybody else that it's best to literally stick to one or two characters and master them so that way you can see how they fight the different cast members. My list for AfroSenju to learn. 1) Pick a character and learn their basic BnBs (Easy Bread and Butters) 2) Ground, Wall and Air followups. In higher ranks people will parry your repetitive attacks and use their movements to ruin your day. When you catch them you want to maximize every punish. Establish dominance. 3) Lastly learn to block and Korean Backdash. Or at least attempt it. If you can even get a semblance of a Korean backdash you'll automatically level up. And blocking will literally beat 50% of the casual fanbase. Good luck Afro! You're my favorite anime. Trying to set you right.

1. Special controls can give you the idea on what moves to do but it can only be effective if you want to play it on a casual/beginner level. 2. It is vital that you learn the moves by yourself and execute them without relying on the special controls. 3. Go to training mode and use the character that you want to main then try using other characters to check their moves and what they do. I want to see you get better at this afro because tbh any average player will make you quit this game with how you're playing it.

Just a few tips for Afro or anyone else who may need them- 1. Some moves are extremely negative on block so even though you may be blocking afterwards you will get hit depending on how fast your opponent is. 2. Rage arts are very unsafe lol always use them during a combo or while being hit 3. You can duck grabs if you have a hard time teching them or until u get the timing right 4. Make a note of which moves are heat engagers (moves that give u the heat running animation) because once your heat is gone it’s gone for the round. 5. Patience is key. Most people that play tekken mash so if u have patience they punish themselves. You’ll be a step ahead of 90% of your opponents😂

Here’s a few things to keep in mind if ya keep coming back, 1. Lock down a character you really want to learn and invest time into what they can do and what kind of play style they fit into. 2. Don’t focus on getting wins right away, just focus on learning and getting better at executing your moves and combos consistently. 3. This game will put you through the ringer because you don’t know a lot, don’t let that discourage you, lab it out, do your research and get on the grind. Love content Afro, I wish you luck!

Matchups in Tekken are based mostly on two things, negative frames on block, from key moves, that another character has good, usually launching, knockdowns, for. Or the other being if a character cannot hit you or them when you or them sidestep or sidewalk. The frames are just remembering who best punishes who, and the sidestep or walk stuff u test all ur good or key moves to see if they track, firstly test vs males of regular size, then females, then moves with sidesteps built into them. An example of how to test, put practice dummy on block for 1st option and step or walk to both directions for 2nd option, and then jab the dummy(square) and follow up with your key moves. Traditionally there have been lists of characters weak sides, but its probably too early for some to bother. Also king has many command throws, throws that require special inputs but are required to break by either just square or just triangle or both at the same time, all individually, a 3 way mixup, compared to regular throws that square or triangle will both break, or both buttons at the same time will break, a 2 way mixup. Since throws and lows beat regular armor, its important.

Afro I recommend learning the actual character moves and inputs. The specialty mode is definitely useful for newcomers but you aren't able to pull out the full the potential of the characters you're trying to play. I'd say hit up training mode and run through your entire character move list just to learn what they're capable of then try the sample combos that way you learn the character moves and also learn what moves work best for combo situations. Other than that you have to learn your character match ups while you're playing. Also in training you can select a move from your move list with triangle and display it on the screen while and practice along with the displayed moves. T8 is SUPER accessible in terms of teaching you the game so take advantage of all of the features and you'll be climbing the rank ladder easily.

The Tekken tournament/community is probably the biggest of the main fighting games(street fighter, Mortal Kombat). You definitely gonna need time to figure out different character strengths and weaknesses. Like Kuma has power and is a bigger target. Whereas females like Xiaoyu,lili etc are speedy but lack the same power as Kuma. Definitely gotta do some testing

Each of kings throws has a separate input you have to break it with. It’s based on the hand that’s on the top in the throw animation. The running throw he got you with to end the round with is a 1+2 break. So you press square and triangle when he tries ti grab to break the throw

1. A lot of grabs are simply a knowledge game. Most of them will be countered by pressing (1), (2), or (1+2) 2. To better develop your game sense, I recommend learning one combo that can be initiated with a launcher through a “sidestep”, “while rising from crouch”, via string, or neutral input. This is IMO the quickest way to learn Tekken, but not necessarily a character. For example, Fahkumram in Tekken 7 had a universal combo that dealt decent damage. The combo was 90% identical except for the first couple of inputs. This combo could be initiated by pressing: - (Sidestep + 4) - (1), (2), (4), (3), (1) - (Back), (Forward), (4) - (4), (3 - quick press 4 and hold 4 down) - (1), (2), (4), (3 - quick press 4 and hold 4 down) - (3), (4 - quick press 3 and hold 3 down) - (While Standing from crouch + 2), (4), (Hold down 3) - (Up + Forward + 1) - (Down + Forward + 2), (3) - (While Standing from crouch + 3) - Low parry = (Down + Forward + In response before getting hit by low) 3. Start off by practicing only one character. I recommend practicing their entire movelist at least once to get a better understanding of their properties. Some character even have unique grabs that can only be blocked by pressing (1+2) instead of either (1) or (2). Putting your enemies into a knowledge check puts the game in your advantage. 4. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of wake up. Some methods put you into a “while rising” state which can lead to you inputting a while rising launcher to start a combo from get up. 5. Try to figure out or search up what might be the highest damaging combo when you get a wallsplat. Many players who learn their first combo eventually carries their opponents to the wall and miss out of potential damage. Some characters even have moves to punish opponents who stay on the ground. Put it all together and you carry to the wall from neutral, wall splat combo, punish if they stay grounded, and either defend of grab when they stand up = Perfect. In all seriousness, it is easier said than done, but you get the point. 6. Once you have your moves and combo memorized, it is time to start all over. In practice tool, switch sides and memorize the other side. 7. Fight stronger players and friends who can give you tips. It will make your own ranked experience feel like a walk in the park. If you wisely use your time, you can become a decent fighter within 20 hours or so with only one combo. Only thing left after that is the knowledge game. There are several guides online already that provide this information for characters. To speed up the learning process, I usually need to look at the combo on paper while performing it. After a bit, it fall into muscle memory. It is painful when side switching, but eventually it will click for you.

You gotta go look at your character’s movelist. They have sample combos for you to look at and try so you can understand your character better. Special controls is gonna cripple you longterm. Also it’s probably better to stick with one character and learn to be good with them first. Promise you’ll get better if you do that.

Afro, Id really recommend doing the story first. It's a good way to practice and not rage at real people. Although Hard will make you rage, its nuts. Also, the Arcade Battle is like a little mini story mode that also acts as a good tutorial. Lastly, you just need to go into practice mode with your main and just practice combos. It has a good system of letting you put combo strings on the screen while you play and combo challenges that are pretty good. Basically, as tempting as it is, you should save Online Ranked for last because you are going to get beat up and its gonna be infuriating

The game literally teaches you so many strong core mechanics that evovle your game more than you know and incentivizes you to memorize them. DO NOT SKIP TUTORIALS! The Less You Know, The More You Lose. Specialty Moves are also a crutch by literal definition. Its only good for sampling out a character you find interesting.

Throws can be tech’d by pressing the 1 or 2(x or y, x or triangle if you didn’t know) If you look at the hand that is further out than the other that is the hand/button you press to get out. Characters like King have ambiguous throws so you don’t know what to press until the throw animation starts up/ reading the situation and know what throw is coming, but if you want to learn how to tech out of throws in general you can go into training and find the throws in the movelist and see what it looks like it will show you what button(s) to press to get out of them. You should have a few recorded and on shuffle so you can practice on teching and reactions

6:58 BTW, the reason you got hit with the Rage Art (Ultimate move) is because you were still in your recovery frames. What that means is your character is still in the animation of your previous attack and when you’re in that phase you can’t do anything so even if you press block you will still get it. If you slow the video down to 0.25 speed you’ll see what I’m saying, Victor is still retracting his sword when you got hit. When your opponent is in their recovery frames, that’s the BEST time to punish, Rage Art, launch etc.

Be patient with it, stick to few characters and then you will have the necessary control you need in each match.
