A great generic tip for new players is to forget about combos. Just play a solid neutral game and get used to constantly mixing up your highs, mids, and lows. Try to bully your opponent with low attaks until they start blocking low then start using your mid attacks to catch them blocking low. Mid attacks in tekken are like overheads in other games.

im new to tekken (and fighting games in general) too and the biggest thing ive learned thats helped me win way more is playing patient and having at least 1 move (like 1, 2 for azucena) thats safe to throw out after blocking a couple attacks. this landed me my first actual combo ever today.

Have played around 30 matches in ranked so far, and haven't yet ran into anybody using specialty mode. Using specialty mode to get through single player content is fine and all, but actually using it for online is kind of embarrassing. I'm not trying to be rude about it or anything...

Blocking and space control are your foundation. The number one thing you should be looking to do is to punish during your opponent's recovery frames. Block, watch for the recovery, punish. I just gave you the secret to every fighting game.
