The removal of the indicator stalk was a deal breaker for me. There are tight roundabouts everywhere here in Norway and these new buttons on the steering wheel are extremely annoying to use. It forces you to look down at the wheel in a critical situation with cars all around you, when your eyes really should be on the road!.. Not good! It's a stupid cost cutting measure at the expense of usability and safety. I've been using this for months in a new model S already and I absolutely hate it. So much so that that I dropped my plans to buy the new model 3 because of it. I just can't justify spending big money on a car that constantly annoys me. It doesn't feel safe taking your eyes off the road while in the middle of a busy roundabout. Nor does it feel safe NOT using the indicators. I constantly found myself in situations where other drivers became frustrated because I wasn't always able to indicate. Another problem with these is that you often end up pressing the wrong button, which can cause some dangerous situations. People think you are going to do one thing, but then the opposite happens.. The buttons don't always work either for some reason. I often find that I have to press twice, because it doesn't register the first time. At least in the model S, but it's the same system so I presume it's the same in the model 3. With a stalk it's pretty evident if you pushed it up or down. That's not the case with these buttons. You have no way of knowing which one you actually pressed, so if you want to make sure, you have to (again) look down at the screen.. It's a really big downgrade to be honest. Many Norwegian driving schools have gone as far as banning the new model 3 because they say it causes their students to fail their driving test in roundabouts. I can't blame them. I've been driving for 24 years, and I've never had problems indicating correctly in roundabouts before, until now. I suppose this works great in the US where there are mostly intersections, and the few roundabouts they do have are fairly large, so it's not much of an issue. But in Norway and most of the EU and the rest of the world which mostly uses roundabouts instead of intersections, this is a real pain in the ass to use.
@sweepsbestpal.10175 ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more, I recently drove the 3 with these controls, 31:07 31:07 far too small to operate easily, didn’t always work first time either, off putting and very awkward. Not clever and a very bad idea, stops me buying the car for just this reason. (50 years driving in many different vehicles and at an advanced level). Another if it ain’t broken don’t try to fix it. !👹
@Peter-nj5mv10 ай бұрын
Totally agree with the indicators, I am pretty sure that soon model 3 owners will be known for not using indicator especially agree that taking a roundabout will make it very hard to indicate when taking an exit, since the steeringwheel is turned and the button is hard to find. Removing the stalks is a mistake. It is another special thing that has to be explained to new drivers, like the interior door releases have to be explained to every new passenger (including the emergency releases; the door releases should be normal chrome levers and work electrically if there is power, and mechanically when power is out: no explanations needed). It will make it harder for car rental companies to rent Teslas. Hertz already bombard you with how-to emails when you rent a Tesla. The cost saving argument is bogus, given the cost incurred to add the purely cosmetic ambient lighting.
@frankoptis9 ай бұрын
No it is not a mistake. If you would drive a Tesla car you would know how often we Tesla driver accidentally switch in to the wrong gear "R" instead of "D". Using the screen prevents that error.

Taking away the indicator was daft - they should make it an option to add if they worry about costs. Sometimes the minimalism can go too far and I genuinely think this actually impacts the safety of driving this car. Fiddling about with finding the right button while trying to make a turn will likely result in unnecessary accidents. You don't even need to look with a regular indicator, you know where it is at all times and can just swipe it out of reflex. With a button you have to look down to select the correct one + when making tight turns as stated it may be difficult. The change in boot height is also very odd + i have a feeling the new fabric lining on the car might get dirtier more quickly / far more difficult to clean.. looks like a great car nonetheless. Just strange that some of the basics are overlooked.

I have removed the head rest and bent the metal rods that hold it in place so that the head rest is more vertical instead of tipped forward (perhaps a 20 degree change in their angle), more like the rear head rests, there are KZbin videos on how to do this properly, makes it far more comfortable and still protective in an accident. @jonevansauthor10 ай бұрын
Yeah it's a cost saver, which is completely stupid. It's nothing to do with improving the human interface. It's a detriment to safety, everyone hates it except the apologists who think the yoke was a good idea, and it should be illegal. I guarantee the people who claim it works fine on roundabouts and stuff just don't signal every time they are supposed to, and are, in fact, the drivers we all hate who aren't safe. It does let them make cars faster and cheaper, that is a good thing but there are some 'the best part is no part' options that are not actually helpful. Btw, I suspect the major cost saving for them is fitting the stalks and the gubbins that makes them work, and most importantly the time that takes on the production line. The switch and stalk are trivial and obviously no-one would care if they just charged £20 more for the vehicle even if stalks weren't over a century old and insanely cheap and reliable.
@rivalrepairs10 ай бұрын
It is impressive that Tesla can and does do things like this. Yes, it is a cost down but once they have iterated on the design and it is as user-friendly as traditional indicators all other car makers will follow as this is another step forward. The other great thing Tesla has done on these new models is leverage their vision system as a parking sensor system. The vision system in any car is very expensive to implement so its good that it gets some use in the UK as a parking sensor system!.

Hi Richard, thanks for the fast posting. Interesting point about the steering rack speed, I'd not thought of that. No indicator stalks is likely to slow traffic throughput on roundabouts, indicating the exit is a kindly thing to do. Not having a stalk might actually reduce crashes as entry vehicles will have to wait to see what the oncoming driver is doing. Voice command would help some of us as I've said before and would be easy to implement. I'm one of the guys who has already suggested S3XY buttons and possibly stalks. I do get a bit concerned about adding electronics to one of the CAN buses though.

It makes a huge difference having it facing the driver a little more. Presume the after market kits will still be available for the Highland/Juniper but it technically needs to be removed before the car can be serviced by Tesla, and removing/re-fitting the original mount is a bit of a stressful process. Based on your comments on the different dash finishes, it would be interesting to hear what your top or most common accessories and modifications are that you do for customers on the model 3?
@powersurge687810 ай бұрын
On the now older Model 3's and Y's the most popular accessories (we don't do many) were the Alcantara Dashboard and Door Trims and the swivel bracket for the screen.

Test drove on Saturday, agree with many if your points Richard! Problem i have is the 9% intrest rate, when the Y is 1.8%! Also, new 3 still would not get us out of our S😁 Now, Performance......🤷
@powersurge687810 ай бұрын
The 1.8% on MY is because they want to sell as many as they can before the new one comes. Exactly what happened with the old Model 3 shape before the upgraded was available to order. I wouldn't be surprised if towards the end of the year they will do 0% APR on the MY.

Agree that the stalks are a matter of habit. It is an effort to change, but once the wiring somewhere in the brain is updated we will all be ok. I have had the refresh S for 9 months. When I go back to the Y I keep pressing plastic bits on the steering wheel at each lane change.
@andrewreynolds772510 ай бұрын
The stalks are a deal breaker for me. I live in a country town with many and I do mean many roundabouts. Moving the steering wheel over 180 degrees makes the buttons inaccessible without moving your hands. BYD Seal for me now. Whatever prompted this change, very silly?

Do the steering wheel buttons work with gloves on?
@connclissmann651410 ай бұрын
Turn on the heated steering wheel instead of the gloves? Practically no impact on range.

@@connclissmann6514 I know it's a bit of an odd question, but the reason I asked it is because I happened to be renting a Tesla over the Halloween period, and at one time I was in a full 1 piece outfit, and was surprised to see that I could use the touch screen through the gloves just fine. Was just curious to see if it would be the same for the steering buttons 🤷🏿♂️

My way around the stalks are s3xy buttons, where I have a button at the bottom of the wheel for indicating right (EU mainland, for left driving cars left would make more sense). Works perfect on roundabouts. Enhance auto, company of s3xy buttons, also anounced they will come with stalks, last date they said was March 2024.

Check carwows comparison Model 3 vs BYD Seal. Looks so stupid when they're doing the parallel park test.
@scotthouslay820310 ай бұрын
I rather think he was being his usual amusing self as he also showed you need two hands to open the door! The gear automatically positions the direction when you first get in the car and put the seat belt on and even then you should check it is the right direction. It has a big arrow so easy to see. It would not do it in this situation and it’s really is simple and easy. The Seal looks a pretty good car but the brakes were very jerky or he was exaggerating it. Everyone has to choose whatever they prefer.

@RSymons RSEV Richard… is the seat on the Highland a bit wider on hip area than previous models (3, Y)? As I have some hip problems and they are just a bit narrow on that area (belt buckle level) and pushes me on that area and hurts and I have to keep moving/changing positions… so I was hoping that they get a tiny bit wider there to reduce pressure and more comfortable on longer rides. Hoping to get the new Model Y when current lease expires in 3 years, but if the seats are pretty much the same (apart from ventilated), I’ll have to look away from Tesla… 😢 Thank you!! Great channel!! 😊

What does the auto forward or reverse selection do when you are parked on a street parking space and the car in front and behind will likely be the same distance away? I'm hoping it will not make a selection and will make you manually choose.
