Morbius was terrible. So where does Sony go from here? I dig into the Spider-Verse here. Venom, Spider-Man, Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, what should they do with it all?

"Everyone wants to make the next Avengers, but no one wants to make the next Iron Man." I can't remember where I heard that, but I think this explains why so many superhero movies fail these days. Every studio wants to reap the benefits of having their own cinematic universe without laying the groundwork. What they forget is that Marvel's Stage 1 films had virtually no interconnectivity, mostly limiting it to after-credits scenes. And only once they had a solid down-to-earth foundation laid, did they start moving into the weirder aspects of their lore.

Venom 2 had Andy fucking Serkis tho. And I loved that movie personally. Much better than the original venom which was utterly determined to try and take it's self too seriously, when all the best parts were the buddy cop dynamic, Hardy's hilarious over the top acting, and the nonsensical over the top action, and the cute little relationships and interactions between the dumb characters which were actually pretty sweet. Venom 2 leaned hard into all that shit and I loved it.

Honestly, as someone who really loved Venom 2, I feel like the answer is simple - embrace the fact that they're making silly B-movies. Venom 2 felt like it could've been a Roger Corman schlocky movie if it'd been made back in the 70s, and Andy Serkis fully embraced that tone for the better. And of all Spidey's minor characters, Morbius slots into that vibe even more than Venom - a doctor who turns himself into a vampire? That's perfect for silliness! And yet Morbius takes itself so incredibly seriously - it refuses to go full camp, but it also refuses to go beyond a PG-13 rating and embrace the horror, hence why it just felt bland

I like this idea because the problem with the MCU, and most of the DCEU when they're trying to imitate Marvel, is that these movies are huge, epic, and tiring. We could use fewer Eternals and more Shazams. If Morbius was more like pre-Iron Man era movies like, say, Blade, it could've been more light and fun. As you say, campy. Also Jared Leto likes to go all out into madness (see his performance in House of Gucci) so they really should have just let him ham it up instead of playing it straight.

Batman and Robin killed campy comic book films thats why we got Nolan films. Rami tried bringing them back but Spiderman 3 being poor received reaffirmed that. The mcu films or a lot of the are very campy compared to other comic book films but in a more wink wink nudge nudge kind of way not like Batman and Robin or 60's Batman campiness. I say stay in the horror lane. Horror does well financially. Campy b movies are destined to be doomed unless they ride a very tight balance.

@chrisgreig98
@chrisgreig98 2 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, we shouldn't act like Disney is an innocent victim who was needlessly dragged into another studio's mess... They've done it themselves in the past, Dark Phoenix being a prime example. That was supposed to be two films, following the comics closely as a way to basically apologise to fans for X-Men: The Last Stand. We were gonna have the Skrulls as the main villains, Magneto leading the Hellfire Club in Genosha (with January Jones returning as Emma Frost & Olivia Munn as Psylocke), Xavier's relationship with Lilandra, a more accurate Phoenix design (with the costume) and so much more. But when Disney bought Fox they made them change it from two films down to one, and further from 2hrs 45mins with a massive UN battle scene down to a trimmed 1hr 50mins mess after they wanted the Skrulls to be saved for Captain Marvel. They even made them change Jean's Phoenix design so they could keep it in their back pocket should they decide to use it in the MCU down the line... Disney's done it as well, so I don't think people should be so quick to feel back for them when Sony done it in Morbius.

Honestly I think it’s about high time Sony pack it in trying to make this spiderverse happen. They’ve been trying to push this stuff for 8 years. Amazing Spider-man 2 tanked because of Sony’s meddling. They win an Oscar for Into the Spiderverse, and No Way Home was an insane financial success. But something about their handling of the Spider-Man brand feels very similar to Warner Brother’s handling of DC. They’re chasing the dollar signs. I agree with Captain when he says we need more bold movies. There’s a reason The Batman was kicking ass at the box office despite no connection to a prior cinematic universe. We need to let go of the idea that having a cinematic universe means a lot of money. Good movies means a lot of money.

The creators should WANT to make this universe of characters, not the studios. The DCEU would have had a solid chance, if they didn’t go and blow their wad of characters in the second movie. But you build up a story, have a focus on a single plot, then maybe make spin offs, or other stories in that universe that don’t involve all, or even any, of the previous characters, and you have a solid chance for an extended universe.

I think a major hurdle for Sony is one that Warner Brothers has: no clear guidance. Marvel films do suffer from a same-iness, but their cohesion comes from the same root cause, that being Kevin Feige. I think someone like Feige knows that for every No Way Home, you're going to have an Eternals, and you have to keep rolling through it. I'm not trying to applaud him as a visionary; this process seems to shun interesting filmmakers (see Edgar Wright, and I'm curious to see what Sam Raimi can do under this), and it turns movie making into even more of an industrial product. But I think that kind of direction to let things cook until they're done, before you bust out your huge superhero smash up (*cough* BvS), has been a benefit for the series as a whole. If Feige isn't the CEO of Disney in the next 20 years, I'll be surprised. If this was a comic book publisher, what they lack is a good editorial team with a view of the whole picture.

I think Shazam! is an example of what you mean by making bold artistic and visual choices. It feels as much like a buddy comedy a la "Big" or "Goonies" as it does a superhero movie and that helped it feel fresh and interesting. It wasn't as much about introducing Shazam into the DCEU as it was telling a story that happened to occur in the DCEU which made it far easier to digest.

Venom is,obviously,my all time favorite villain and one of my all time favorite characters in general. The Venom movies are fun...but dumb. They lean WAYYY too much on comedy. Venom himself can be an anti-hero,sure. Although,again I do prefer him as a villain. But,I wanted to see a more badass,scary and complex Venom film. The scripts needs work,but the tone is also in question too.

The problem is up until the donny cates run that is what venom generally was.... a GOOFBALL. Even as a straight up spiderman villain dude was... a damned goof half the time. Hammy and larger than life and this was the leifield era where Eddie brock had a flat top haircut and was built like a joestar on steroids. Go look at the actual majority of the venom run. yes there is complexity there and I love the dynamic but 'oh waaah i wanted scary angsty badass venom.'

I understand what you're saying and I agree with it. I mainly read the McFarlene/Larsen era. At times he could be a goof. I guess what I'm trying to say is that,at least to me he was still intimidating in those issues. I especially remember in Mcfarlene's run that Spidey was scared of him. Even in Spider-man 3(which I do love)he felt more like Venom to me than he does in these newer movies. You can have the character be silly sometimes,but still have there be an unpredictability and menace to him. He'll crack a joke,but then rip out someone's spine. Just my opinion,however.

Some of the Spider-Man villains really need Spider-Man for their stories to work. Instead of thinking they can turn every Spider villain into a Sinister Six series of connected films maybe they need to focus a bit on the various Spider heroes they have. I think unfortunately what we're seeing is that Studios like Paramount and Sony are simply not cut out to survive in the current landscape. Yet each have an IP (Star Trek and Spider-Man) that has a sufficient enough legacy to, for some time yet, counterbalance their poor management. Without Spider-Man my money would be on the fact that Sony would of sold off it's movie making interests quite a few years ago, and though Paramount is different, without Star Trek, they don't have a lot of IP's to succeed outside of the previous distribution model before the streaming wars. Sad as it is I think we're going to see fairly terrible continuations of both franchises for quite some time as low level interest generates enough money to insulate executive level decision making from creatively rewarding risks. The first thing Sony did after the success of Into the Spider-Verse (a film which by the way had a budget half that of Homecoming) was to set up a whole slew of projects in the same vein with the same creative team. They aren't interested in the least with original film making, they want a formula and they will happily run the franchise into ground trying to find it.

Venom worked, at least for me, because it had a strong center (the bond and interactions between Eddie and Venom) that at least kept the story interesting. Plus, it knew what it was and it never took itself serious to the level that it bogged down the movie. Morbius, however, had no center and wasn't at least fun. I was genuinely surprised by the choice to go with a "Part One" for "Across The Spider-Verse". And when I really think about it, that's actually pretty fitting. The vast world of the Spider-Verse is gonna get plenty of time to work with these various characters and leave an impression. I'm actually admiring the ambition to do that so suddenly. And heck, Japanese Spider-Man does deserve a tale that will be fittingly large enough for his giant robot. And hell, maybe it might be for the best that these films may still be second priority to Sony. That way they'll have less studio meddling going about. In a way, I feel that's exactly why Spider-Verse was able to succeed and leave a unique impression beyond "setting up shit for the future."

While I still would have made (much better-written) solo films for characters like Venom, Morbius, Kraven, Black Cat, etc., the main focus would be on other Spider-Men and Spider-Women, characters like Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Gwen, Madame Web (the Julia Carpenter version), Scarlet Spider, Silk, and of course Miles Morales. I'd keep the Venom movies out of the MCU though, as I think they work better in the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man universe and I'd rather have Mac Gargan/Scorpion become the MCU's Venom.

Re: Garfield in Venom 3 - This is a great idea. But more than that, I say make him the background character of all of these (ill thought out) spinoff movies; by this I mean if you're going to do a Tombstone movie, do a cool crime thriller and pepper Garfield into the background - as a bystander who slips away moments before Spidey prevents a crime, etc. - then have him come in and rescue Tombstone's daughter after he puts her life at risk for crime stuff. Have Spidey beat up a variety of the film's lesser bad guys, have Tombstone kill the ~Kingpin and take his place, but then have him lament that he's gotten all he wants, but at the cost of his family who have fled. Tombstone doesn't even need to fight Spiderman for this to work; it's his movie, not Amazing Spiderman 3. You do this N times, then you can do a Sinister 6 movie where they fight Spiderman, who might be a main character.

There´s just no point in trying to make a movie out of a villain that never had his own history besides being Spiderman villain. Unless you stablish them like the Marvel movies stablished Loki, there´s just nothing there that is compeling, and certainly no comics to use. Because, what comic could you find about Morbius or Kraven without Spiderman as protagonist? Venom did have those. As Thunderbolt, and as Dark Avenger. So cancel Kraven, cancel Madame Webb, you can´t make those good. Not without Spiderman.

So here's a crazy movie idea: Venom - The Last Hunt I can't be the first to think that might work, right?

For books, I was told publishers are looking for stories they can spin off into a series, that can become a franchise. By the same token, I was told to write my first book as a stand alone that is capable of being spun off into a series - if the demand is there, or the publishers see a possibility. That seems like good advice to the film execs driving film franchise mania. Make a good first film, follow up if there is a demand for what is being offered. Not every story needs a sequel, and a one off isn't any less worthy of being screened than a franchise. In the end - maybe just be a little less greedy, have the courage to take chances, roll the dice.

What if the antagonist of the Kraven movie is Garfield's Spiderman? Filmed almost like a horror movie, where Kraven, though a villain, is the protagonist of the story, unstoppable with a clear goal that he desperately tries to achieve. Like Thanos was portrayed in Infinity War
