There’s nothing difficult about it. Just be the parent you are supposed to be. Period. And many Nigerians who think the homosexual lifestyle is limited to the west, will be shocked at what they will find under their own roofs. Better keep your eyes on your children and quit pointing the other way.

As a father of three children living in the United States, I see the two sides of the argument and the need to adopt a balanced approach. I have witnessed the dark sides of the two approaches highlighted in this discuss. My approach is that the vision and values of each family should determine how their children are raised. Nigerian Children living in the United States are living in conflicting cultural environments, the Nigerian home culture and the American culture. The so called "progressives" are pushing extreme liberal ideologies that are diametrically opposite to the conservative Judo-Christian values that parents from Nigerian hold dearly. For me, I raise my children with the carrot and the rod. The excesses of American child laws and culture is too tragic and deep to allow a naïve child to navigate it alone. It is better to prevent such mistakes than to correct them. The American culture and laws are so unforgiving and keep trails of misgivings indefinitely. You must strike a balance between being your children's friend or being their parent. Many Nigerian children are in avoidable prison, drugs, mental illness etc. May God continue to help us.

Just what I thought about today. Some children in Nigeria actually influence children from abroad immorally. Be prayerful and be led at all times by the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to reveal deep things unto you. Some issues are from the blood line sef. Some people, immorality is from their ancestry. Na so dem be, consistent revelatory prayerful are needed. Also don't spear the rod. Don't reverse the rod and make your children your own parents because they are more literate than you. Wisdom and school is different. Discipline them. You will give account to ancient of days oh. I and the children the Lord gave me are for signs are wonders. I see them as belonging to the Lord and that has helped me so much. My children know that I love God more than them and they respect that boundary.

There are mistakes that you can never recover from. The idea that a child must make mistakes at some point in life is misleading. You can learn for the mistakes of others. Some parents used to tell their children " if don't want to end up like your uncle lagbaja, you better read your book or avoid something", and may even be flogged so that the message sinks in.

You may never recover from those mistakes. It is best to have an open door policy so they can share with you the things they want to try out. Every action has consequences. Some of the consequences live with you forever.

The only issue I have about this conversation is thinking being gay is mainly learned behaviour from abroad.... There is historical evidence that homosexuality existed in Africa years ago and still exists today.. The sooner we address this myth the better for everyone

Dear Joseph same sex attraction NEVER originated in AFRICA. Ask your great grand parents, see how they will look at you with revulsion. It's foreign. The lie is to make YOU accept it. Please recieve sense the devil is a Liar!.

To say "We" would make it look like all Nigerian parents have raised their children badly while the Òyìnbós have been perfect, like there are no positives in our ways. I'll disagree. Their style of parenting has bred just as many badly behaved kids too. No system has ever been perfect. Of course, many parents here need to be more approachable and conversational with their kids. However, Òyìnbós parents too would have to review their concepts of freedom and respect and not just sheepishly concede to their kids desires. As with many problems, the true solution to the negatives and extremes found in the two parenting styles - ours and theirs - lies somewhere in the middle.

Western laws are man made laws to suits themselves which makes most of them wayward.. Nigerian law is the Bible, that guide families most times..and it's working for us.. they ways of an African upbringing is the best .. African have their culture, westerners have theirs... we should stick to ours and live our lives. The moment we Africans start comparing that's when there will be a defect ,a bug .. in this live everything has their pros and cons. We just hv to choose what's best and we hv seen most times that an African upbringing is the best...whether you like it or not....allow westerners and I must say until Nigerians especially stop copying all these things they see and start to believe in their own self,culture and lifestyle then we might never get it right..we have to UPGRADE OUR MENTALITY ABOUT OURSELVES AND CULTURE and not envy other people's lifestyles..

Different cultures for different people. Economics and social solutions are governance issues. When governance improved in places such as China, South Korea, Botwana, Rwanda, Singapore to mention a few countries, the economic climate changed for the better and and people's aspirations being gradually achieved. You can improve and modernise culturally but it will be a mistake to give up your identity believing you have to live the same lifestyle as the west to fulfil your aspirations.

@maye3244

@@edowitch4703 That's bad behaviour, not our culture. Our culture never found it agreeable. But as with many bad things, the more it happens without repercussions, the more tolerable it becomes. And usually, the more corrupt the leader, the more crooked the led. Until Nigerians stop seeing unpunished corruption at the top, our society will continue to suffer the injustices caused by individual moral decline.

Majority of western children are excellent people who will go out of their ways to treat others with respect and dignity. The Oyinbo communicate with their children from age zero like adult and always respect them as individual not a subject under any authority unlike what we have in our society. We need to change and learn how to be our children's friend to bring the best out of them

There's nothing like I thought I was gay. No offence to morayo. That statement was an insensitive one to make. for someone in the media, even if you don't like homosexuals, you say such sensibly and not directly. If you are gay, you'll feel it within you and it doesn't start overnight nor does it get slapped away. Thanks.

I thought the same. She made being gay look like behavior for which one could be and should be punished. Now, people who know less, rather than research, will attack you for standing up against homophobic tunes. So, once again fam, Morayo's statement was insensitive and no truly gay person could be beaten back to being straight just as a straight perso won't be beaten to becoming gay. Nature (God) created diversity and this is the spice of life.
