After officer's death on I-70, concern grows about safety on interstates

I’m a retired firefighter in St. Louis county. Our district covered highways 70 & 270 and I hated running calls on the highways because people are in a hurry. They either go 70 mph and look at the accident or slow down to look. We even had one of our truck rear ended on 70. That’s why on calls on the highways we use a fire truck as a blocker to protect the people on the scene.

It’s like that in Maryland too. I-70 is where you go to go fast, packed traffic at like 5:30 will be moving at 90mph. It’s so trippy.

I’m from Illinois, but know St. Louis highways/interstates are no joke. Missouri highway patrol doesn’t do enough in the St. Louis area.

I used to drive an AAA service truck and interstate response calls were the worst. People wouldn’t move over or just didn’t care. Even the move over laws don’t help . I was out one day changing a tire wand was just finishing up when it happened. A semi hit my truck. My lights were on and all my reflectors were still out. He clipped the truck and sent it spearing into the rail. I turned to run only to have the twisted wreck of my truck appear 5 feet from my face as I threw myself over the guard rail. I broke my ankle when I fell 10 feet onto the hill below. My truck looked like it had been chewed up and spat out. After I got picked up from the hospital by my boss and he took me back to the garage to drive home, I quit on the spot. Watch highway through hell on the weather channel and you’ll see it’s no picnic for those driving tow trucks either

Problem is truck drivers or cars doesn't drive for others and not proactive at all

We need tougher sentences as well. There are people out there with more than 2 or 3 dui's still driving. This drunk driver needs life in prison. Sat and Sun have as much if not more traffic.

So carry cones in the police car. With 5 cones you can close off 100 meters of highway behind the patrol vehicle. What is the difference between a police car or a trooper or response officers who attend the accidents. You do NOT need 4 officers to slow down traffic. Lights, scrolling arrows, 5 cones and 2 keep right or left arrows in the us is all you need. I’m speaking as a traffic officer with over 20 years experience working the motorways many of it with no shoulder and all lanes live. It sounds like the traffic officers such as myself are very similar to your response officers who only work 6 days. We work 7 days, 24/7, 365 days. Sorry for the loss of this officer, but it’s purely down to training and the right equipment. The public will kill you to get to their destination an extra 20 seconds earlier. Do NOT trust them, do NOT expect them to follow signals and keep your head on a swivel.
