Fantastic footage of some interesting freight/engineers movements, but the 158 remains a fantastic workhorse and helps keep these regional lines viable. Thanks, as always!

Much as I enjoy your Citadel videos Les, these occasional recordings from Hellifield are something else. The best modern traction with outstanding MR architecture, semaphore signals and beautiful countryside. Viewed from the heat of urban Singapore, they are a true pleasure. Thank you.

Glad you like them! I do like getting out and about but the weather and often a lack of activity on the days I could go do affect the opportunities. I do like Hellifield, though. Real atmosphere!

Good morning Leslie. Great location and a fantastic job they’ve done preserving Hellifield station 👍🏻 My wife misses the log train now it goes this way and not on the West Coast main line via Lancaster 😫 I’ve said before we’ve bought a new build house in Barton near the railcam camera with our garden next to the line. Always a great quality video Les 👍🏻

I keep meaning to try and catch the stone trains fro both Shap quarries - although one was to the Blyth battery factory and ran only once or twice. The Yorkshire Dales quarries get heavy loads - soon Hortin in Ribblesdale will get its siding back

Hellifield is an interesting looking location. It is years since I last passed through and that was on a foul, dark day by a reroute off the WCML so I didn't see much. I do observe that the working part of the station is unsheltered from the weather. I wonder why the areas under the canopies weren't improved instead.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Its certainly a wonderful little time capsule. I suspect that back in the day the railway wanted to rid itself of the station building and canopies - especially if the S&C had closed. Instead it concentrated maintenance on that 4-car length south of the buildings, adjacent to the subway access above which there is some shelter. There's a stretch of disused platform between there and the signal box too. Its great that the station building and canopies were listed and retained - it makes a fantastic home for a very popular cafe, bookshop, museum and Holiday let!

I must admit every time I visit Hellifield and glance east down the platform to the Ribble Valley Line I think if there was a passenger service up from Preston I would not have to drive up here. Also the loss of the ‘Sunday Ramblers Service’ makes me wonder if we actually have a railway that is interested in the travelling public.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
I don't understand Northern's reasons for withdrawing the Sunday service let alone not extending services from Clitheroe to Hellifield or maybe beyond.
@JohnSmith-bx8zb Жыл бұрын
@@LeslieGilpinRailways it might just be that from Preston using this service to Canalise with a senior railcard return was £20. Ideal for a S&C return with La Sunday Lunch and a quick listen to sung evensong rehearsal at the Cathedral before getting back to the station for around 14.45 and home

Thanks for the video Les. Not seen a Class 60 'jump' like that at 5:44. I assume the traction control either reset or it was an uncontrolled slip that the driver had to back out of?

Hellifield looks a fascinating place, a definite feel of faded glory, such intricate cast iron work too. Was it a more important place in days gone by?
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
It was built as a junction to allow trains from Manchester and Blackburn, off the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway to connect into the Midland Railway expresses from St Pancras and Leads to Carlisle and Scotland as well as stopping point for the Morecambe to Leeds and Bradford services. Engine shed there too for providing additional power up the Settle & Carlisle to Blea Moor and .Ais Gill. Oh and dining facilities for the passengers who couldn't afford to travel in the Pullman restaurant carriages!
