This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Three wins against Morphy - probably the most talented chess master to ever play the game? Pretty darn good. But, of course, Lowenthal has to be Lowenthal, and not be a gentlemen in accepting defeat. I recently gave rook odds to a friend of mine, who plays pretty well, and it was a heck of a battle. Similar to this game, it came down to a passed pawn of mine that won the game. I congratulated my friend a a game very well played. He is just a novice, but played a wonderful game - an epic battle, and we enjoyed every minute of it. Our friendly wager of "loser buys lunch" was won by my friend. Even though he technically lost the game, he played far beyond his novice skills, and that is a clear victory.

I mean you could say that Löwenthal's judgement was impaired at times. The Queen to H8 move in the previous game hinted that Löwenthal wasn't playing his best chess, especially since he basically set up an immortal just a few games before that. My diagnosis: mercury poisoning impairing his judgement. A very common ailment during that time period.

That last game you found with the blunder by Lowenthal changes the flavor of this match. Lowenthal had to be crushed after that mistake. I mean it doesn't get much worse than that. Yes top players should be able to recover but it still changes my entire perception of this match from how I used to view it.

5:18. is it really? If bishop takes both knights, it will fork both the king and the queen at the end. White will win 2 knights, queen and the pawn later on, while black only gets a queen and a bishop. Morphy played the correct move there, defending the knight.

What? The black queen will take that bishop forcing the rook to take back, which the king will capture. So white loses a rook as well.

@@AndasMus Actually, i have to shamefully admit that i only saw o couple of episodes but i plan to finish it as Lelouch truly seems like a unique character compared to other anime protagonists. I also enjoyed very much that the creators made him a chess player because chess is rare in anime.

​@@gigihagiu2727 Bro, you are so right. I am not a big anime watcher, but I sit through all the episodes of Code Geass in 2 days (my eyes hated me for that). I couldn't do anything else. Any time an episode ends, I will want to know what happens in the next. Chess is really rare. Another anime I know is called "No Game No Life". It's much shorter but also very exciting. Tells a story of two weirdoes that get sucked into a fantasy world. Pretty nice. The main character is a great chess player, but will still lose to Lelouch (in my opinion). After you finish all the episodes, feel free to check out the Code Geass movie. It tells the story after the rebellion. Very nice (at times, better than the original episodes). I think they wanted to make a third season, but not enough money so they just made a 1 hour 20 min movie. Hope you have a nice time watching. If you know any good animes, please do let me know. I am always on lookout for good stuff.
