The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Nope, the story of this series is just so awesome. Even if you exclude the international politics of it, the mind games going on with where the games were played, how they were recorded, who was watching, what they were sitting in, what they were playing on, what kinds of pieces they were playing with, and the list goes on. Just so awesome.

Fischer ended (more accurately "interrupted") 20+ years of Russian domination in chess, and propelled the game into mainstream consciousness resulting in more players able to make a career from chess. This week SerraL (of Finland) ended 20 years of Korean domination over Starcraft II. Just thought I'd share some nerd news from another game.

Thank you for this fabulous series on the 1972 championship. My older brother and I were young teens when the Fischer-Spassky championship was played, and we were avid chess fans. My brother was a good player for his age, and I was a bad player for any age. The only way we had of following the matches was by newspaper (no internet or 24-hour cable news in those days!). There was a short paragraph in the next day's paper about each game result, and a listing of the moves. My brother and I spent hours reliving the matches, and he understood a lot more than I did. He was very sure early on that Fischer would win the championship. I was less certain. It is fantastic to be able to relive this championship after these 47 years by means of your videos.

I’m sure what he was paranoid about was probably true but geez 🙄 the millions of fans were disappointed!! Even if I’m less than good I can appreciate what’s happening. Is it fair to say that the esthetic problem with chess is that being great ends up being a matter of memorizing a lot of openings & their variations (rote memory)? And of course a computer is better at that than humans are. Perhaps Fischer chess goes a long way towards fixing that, as with random piece arrangement at the start, it becomes virtually impossible to memorize so much openings?

I want to say that I am happy you didn't tell us until the very last video how many games were in the series. I liked watching the games for their own sake, not knowing how many were coming and thus deducing who won which games. So happy for the lack of spoilers.

Dude, I was here to celebrate 1.000 subscribers and watch this channel evolve in so many ways. Besides completely crazy -though equally justified and fair-, it also feels poetic that your are close to 300.000 subs, finishing the Fischer Story and so close to the Carlsen-Caruana match. Keep up Sir, this is just great =)

Many people also dont know how Fischer was very paranoid because of his background (and parents). Its very interesting and it will give you an insight into why Bobby acted like he did.

Great series as always! Wondering if Alekhine and Capablanca didn't draw at least 7 times, I discovered that they indeed did: there were 7 draws in a row (games 13-20) in the World Championship match of 1927 between Capablanca and Alekhine.

You did an amazing job with this series. A real masterpieceI just watched the whole series for the 2nd time as I enjoy it so much. I again wonder what would have happened if chess had gone over to the system proposed at the end where the World Champion takes on different challengers on a regular basis. Would it have become more like boxing? Could have been exciting.

Thank you so much for this series (and all your other vids). #suggestion Obviously the Carlsen/Caruana match will command attention, but maybe next year how about looking at other championships from the past where there are more (or nearly as many) wins than draws (Draws can be fascinating, but too many is disheartening). Steinitz vs Chigorin (1889?) Lasker vs Steinetz 1894 Alekhine vs Bogoljubov 1929 Karpov vs Korchnoi 1981

An excellent series and a true chess saga it was like having 21 Star Wars movies made - you need to watch all of them to know the story completely. Boris Spassky a real class gentleman considering they were in the cold war era. Looking forward to your next series.

The reason Fischer drew all these games is he was already up by 3 games, and he knew that if he kept drawing games he would eventually win, and it is so easy to draw games on purpose, just trade everything, trade queens and rooks, and it will be a draw, and it is much safer to draw a bunch of games than try to win, because winning often includes risks. When Fischer needed to win, in games 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7, he played to win. This resulted in wins and one game that he extended himself and Spassky almost won but Fischer was lucky to get a draw. Once Fisher was in the lead by 3 games, he drew 7 games in a row. On this last game, Fisher pulled out all the stops and said fuck it, I will play to win and kick his Roosgei ass.

This was a great series man. Really well done. If you're looking for #suggestions for the next series, I'd love to see the second match between Karpov and Kasparov (not the first one with like 900 draws that was eventually abandoned). Purely food for thought.
