My 6 year old son: "Who won the chess game?" Me: It was a draw. Son: Who is winning now? Me: It is tied 4.5 to 4.5 Son: So Magnus won 4 games and Fabi won 4 games? Me: No, it is 9 draws. Son: 9 in a row??? Me: Yes. That can happen when both players are very good. They are playing so well that no one can get a decisive advantage. Son: It sounds pretty boring dad. Me: No, draws can be interesting too. Sometimes it takes very good play to stop the opponent from winning and hold it to a draw. Both players have shown that they can defend well and never give up. Son: Come on dad, that is ridiculous. How can there be 9 games and no one ever wins? Me: I love you, but go upstairs while I watch agadmator's video about this game.

Agadmator, wise opening comments about the draws. Last couple of games drew out the Fabi haters, that he doesn't play chess he just memorises engine moves. Good to see the Fabi haters have nothing to say about Carlsen here coming prepared and with the white pieces manages a draw. Carlsen throws new punches and Fabi blitzes out refutations. Not a bad match at all. Carlsen and Fabi have both been subject to time pressures before the time control. We can expect some blood very soon. Carlsen is a very very strong experienced champion. Fabi is a great challenger. As Joydeep Bardhan said in an earlier game .

A couple of years ago I spent a day analyzing this positional idea of inducing black to play f6 when he is castled kingside and reached a very similar position, which has a lot of restrained venom. Carlson's criticism of h4 is correct, he should keep maneuvering until black is tied down preventing invasion on the back ranks or by the white queen going to f7, and only then should white weaken his kingside by expanding with h4, h5, etc. I am quite surprised that Carlson, who likes grinds, rushed with h4.

The two white blips underneath the bandaid look like Steri-strips. They are used in place of stitches when a wound is not wide enough or deep enough to require an actual stitch. Triumph of engines. Death of imagination.
@salmarwow6 жыл бұрын
Cannot agree at all. Engines doesn't play any role in middlegame. It's just that both of them are playing very, very good. How many mistakes have you seen thus far? Not many. h3 in game 8 comes to mind but one would be right to call that inaccuracy, not a mistake. And that is after 9 games under huge pressure. Some people are saying they play very safe, but I definitely saw plenty of active moves which were made with offense in mind, not defense. I still remember that tournament when Caruana won and became a challanger. It just felt that he is just ahead of everyone else in that tournament, despite plenty of serious competitors. I bet if you had someone else playing Carlsen but Caruana, result wouldn't be a draw. Carlsen simply would be leading by point or two at least.
@salmarwow6 жыл бұрын
@ Well, that's what I'm saying. Engine preparation until midgame, but still in the midgame quality of moves is high. So I'm very keen to blame everything on engines. Heck, one can say that they both play endgame like engines, especially Magnus, but it doesn't mean that real engines are involved.
@salmarwow6 жыл бұрын
@ A slight inaccuracy here, although you are not the first to tell it, I even heard it from official commentators. It's the start of the match with the draws which is the longest one, all other championships had a decisive game sometime in the begining. However it's not the longest series of draws. Take for example Kasparov vs Karpov in 1984. When result was 4:0 in Karpov's favor, players played 17(!) games which ended in a draw. Towards the end of the match they had another series of 14 drawn games. As for myself, I would like to see things finished in standard format. While rapid is definitely interesting, standard format has highest quality of the game (although it may be more boring sometimes). It would be more fair if standard format games decide which player is the best.

Unfortunately, Caruana has to say that about his rapid and blitz tie break chances. Carlsen isn't just better at it: he's number 1 in the world and Caruana is nowhere close (8th). Caruana's only shot is to win during the regular match, which I think he still has a huge chance of doing based on his solid defensive play and Carlsen's lost mojo to find a way to win a better position (game 1 and game 9). But at the end of the day, I don't think Caruana can hope for anything but draws against Carlsen, and I think we will see 3 more draws, followed by some cool rapid games where Carlsen crushes decisively. At least, if I was a betting man, that's what I'd place my money on now

I can't help feeling that Caruana is better than Carlsen, which is not what I was expecting. But he chokes in every game and throws away any advantage, and spends the rest of the game defending. After pawn f6 the light squares on the a2-g8 diagonal are a threat to black's king safety, so it is nuts to throw away black's light square bishop without getting white's light square bishop in return. Afterwards white totally dominated this diagonal and the long white diagonal as well. What am I missing? (Full disclosure: I suck at chess).
