Thanks, Antonio! I think this game was important for a couple of reasons. First, it signals to Caruana that Carlsen isn't afraid of the Petrov; that's a statement that Caruana has 10 pressure filled weeks to think about. Second, Carlsen took the game out of theory very quickly and made Caruana play him straight up. Third, Carlsen was never behind in this game. This really poses another 10 week question to Caruana: "Can you play 12 games like this?" Finally, this was Caruana's opportunity to put the psychological pressure on Carlsen - - take his #1 rating and give him 10 weeks to stew. Didn't happen. Instead Caruana can prepare for November remembering that he hasn't defeated Carlsen in a classical game in 3 years.

It was just mistake by Carlsen really that costed him. Caruana was beaten. (Caruana got really lucky Carlsen made that bad move or maybe inaccuracy) Although he did play well.

What a tense game, i thought Fabi was lost, but Magnus let him off the hook. Still Fabi defended very well and deserved the draw. I don't have a problem with Carlsen showing off a little bit, after all he's still the best in the world and perhaps some of his critics are a bit harsh on him evey once in a while

There are some more beautiful subtleties that I believe need to be emphasized. The first one is that Magnus played Bc4 at move 8: This is actually a novelty at the 2600+ level that was never played before, and it threw Fabi off of his preparation. The reason no one has played these move before is, that the bishop there is very vulnerable to attacks. The reason Carlsen played this move is to force Fabi to castle kingside because otherwise f7 and h7 would have gotten too weak . The second one is Be2 at move 14: This is such a Magnus move- attack by defense. Magnus realized that the bishop has done its job at c4 and it made black go to the kingside with its king. So Magnus decided to take it out of the unprotected square c4 to a much more protected square where the bishop will still contribute to the attack by helping g4 and defended the knight. Weaker players (like me) would have just moved the rooks to the h and g files and attacked with the pawns. But Magnus as Magnus does, denies black counterplay and attacks at the same time. The 3rd one is Bc1 at move 17: This is the essence of Magnus' style, first deny all counterplay and only then attack. It is also quite impressive that he wasn't scared of any discovery moves with the knight. Fabi said that around here he didn't understand how did he end up with such a tough position. The 4th one is Re1 at move 21: Instead of attacking in the kingside and letting black exchange queens as is more natural to do, Magnus wastes a move on moving a rook that he will move again next move. The reason is that by doing so Carlsen forced Fabi to clarify the position immediately by exchanging the queens. And because after the exchange the black knight was forced into a bad square. The 5th is Ne2 at move 24: A bad move in a very hard position. The 6th is Ng4 at move 27: Even though that for the computer Ng4 and f6 are about the same, f6 was much stronger. The attack after f6 is much more natural to a human player and bought players agreed that Fabi would have lost. I think that the reason that Carlsen didn't make this move is that he was too excited that he is about shutting down Caruana, who is getting closer and closer to his rating. (Carlsen's live rating is 2834 and of Fabi's live rating is 2827). I really think that Carlsen lost focus and ruined an otherwise great game. After this mistake Fabi showed exactly why he is the 2nd strongest player in the world and with one perfect move after another he was able to draw the game. I'm so excited about the championship!!!

While not the best possible move, Nd4 is by no means a blunder: At 35 moves depth, the engine has it as a solid second-best move, showing white up +1.38 versus +1.62 for the e6 pawn push (no other moves are as remotely good for white as either Nd4 or e6). The subsequent capture of the pawn at g7 is the actual inferior follow-up move that reduced Carlson's winning chances markedly (it deviates from Stockfish10's Nd4 sequence that instead prefers developing white's bishop to e3).

Magnus played a sketchy line that might get him an edge He does get an edge after brilliant play and fabi didn’t really make any serious blunders Now imagine being Carlsen and reading all the mean comments about how Alex let him off the hook and so on and then playing against fabi who is playing at home, people are all cheering for fabi and everyone is calling Magnus a narcissist (wouldn’t you love yourself if you were best?) A lot of people also said fabi will humiliate Carlsen today but it’s a tie Now the difference between Carlsen and fabi is the game against Karjakin Carlsen was grinding his win while karjakin basically let fabi win In my opinion Carlsen played better (also every game fabi got a better position was because he memorized the line up to 20th move) I’m not saying fabi is bad, I’m just saying put yourself in the emotional swing Carlsen has experienced this tournament and then judge the worlds number one

Opening prep is useful, but you have to have a conceptual understanding of the thematic positions in-order to generate new ideas during changing game dynamics. Kasparov was a master of this and Caruana is proving adept at this. Carlsen is still playing his old style which is absolutely impressive but is such an exhausting way to win games that it must take a toll on him - remember he isn't 20yrs anymore.

Magnus IS a nacissist. And no, he has no justification for it. It is true, he is very good at one thing (as opposed to 1 Million other things that he would suck at). And that one thing is basically useless. The only reason he is being paid for it is because people are supposed to enjoy watching him. You seem to enjoy his little brat antics, but I find them disgusting to see in a supposedly grown-up man. Trying to "silence the haters" by doing exactly what earns him the most criticism and then drawing the game is just too ironic for words - serves him right. Just because he can calculate lots of moves in chess does not earn him my respect. Now, if he could learn to look at his opponent when shaking hands, that would get my attention (not that it would be terribly impressive, since most sportsmen can do that my the time they are 13-14).

Caruana not calling the arbiter for the 3 fold repetition might have been some gamesmanship. Not saying it was, just that it could have been a mind game - in essence saying to Carlsen, "you're not in a winning position, I'm fine with continuing here".

Fabi was correct. He moved Re6 before Magnus played Rf1. And after ... Kf8, Magnus' knight was on b5 with Fabi's rook on e6, so the repetition wasn't complete until Fabi made that last rook move back to e6.

After they met in the WCC with all draws until the tie-break rapid phase, the general consensus was that the match fell well short of expectations. This possibly had to do with the good preparation of the players and games like this (Petroff) which was among the openings they intensely studied.

Carlsen's quote could be rephrased as: "Not winning a tournament is not an option for me, unless it is." Proof that chess geniuses aren't geniuses at everything. (Unless he was making a joke, in which case the quote is hilarious, but I don't think he was trying to be funny.)

May be Carlsen had a deja vu today when he thought of his WC match against Karjakin. He had in some games winning positions against him but couldnt make use of them. As you remember, it was a very close match that went into a tiebreak.

I'm not really good at chess, just enjoy the show, but I want to hear some thoughts: after 29. fxg7+ Rxg7, instead of playing 30. Be3, what about playing 30. h6? It creates a really difficult position for black, and trying it out on stockfish it leads to a favorable endgame for white with a whole Rook up.
