The answer to 0:38 is actually pretty obvious immediately when you see the scorpions. Scorpion bolts pass right through enemies, so each of the surrounding scorpion's attacks were able to cover a larger area and hit multiple targets, whereas each scorpion in the middle could only hit one or two scorpions per shot. However, the outcome likely would've been very different if the unit choices were infantry, cavalry, etc. instead.

only 7 years late replying, but the outcome if these were melee units still would of been the outer units winning, the more surface area of active units you have, the more damage. whereas the central units will block each other. However, the process of surrounding your enemy may lead to casualties, making surrounding them pointless. With ranged units, it is all dependent on how your units decide to target the enemies, so will differentiate with micromanagement, and luck.

With villagers vs war elephant you select the villagers in the centre, that way people with room can move in and attack. Instead you're just leaving them there by selecting the sides of the crowd.

VDML is actually usefull. If you don't use marco and polo to open fog, you can take out a VDML and make him go from east to west to north to south and open the map. Because he is running reall fast :D

The Trebuchet fight reminds me of why I never wanted to play this game. You have one battle with only a handful of units on both sides, and they can't fit it on the screen at the same time? How annoying to have to constantly scroll back and forth to see what is going on.

When you ask what's better, surrounding or being in the center, you're using units that do damage as long as their "arrow" is still flying. So when you are in the center, you're basically screwed with those. In any other situation, it's better to be in the center. Try it, you'll see

the 2nd part, where you're checking whether it's better to surround or be surrounded isn't thought out very well. Scorpions have splash damage, so it's obvious it's better to spread your units apart. You should try that with a non-splash damaging unit, like spearmen or something

The whole "surround or center" thing only applied to those scorpions because they have piercing projectiles that to damage to anything it touches, letting every single one of the scorpions on the outside do maximum damage. The story is different with melee units.
