So I was curious so I decided to check: Over NBA history, only in 2 decades was the average playoff offensive rank higher than defensive, the 2010s and the 1980s, which are also the only decades where no champion was in the bottom half of either ranking. The best playoff defense has won 31 times and the best offense has won 16. The last time a team won without being in the top half of both stats was in 2021 when the Bucks were the 11th best offense in the playoffs. Before that was the 2006 Heat also being the 11th best offense, and they of course address the Spurs in 03 being the 10th best. The last time a below average defense won was 2000 when the Lakers had the 13th best defense in the playoffs. All in all, Defense alone typically won’t win. But if you had to choose one to be elite, defense is probably the better bet.

Ryan Davis was wrong. Look at all the defensive and offensive ratings for all the teams that won chips. Almost all of them have top 10 defenses AND offenses. You'll rarely see a top 10 offense and not a top 10 defense win. It's also rare to see a top 10 defense, and a not top 10 offense win. Both are generally important. Also, Ryan Davis saying that to KD was hilarious because KD has one of those rings where the team didn't have a top 10 defense, but had a top 2 offense.

And even if you have a subpar defense in the regular season you can improve in the postseason on both ends. Look at the Heat last year they were a bottom half offense all year until the postseason came and they became the best shooting team in the postseason. Also we have seen multiple times that a defensive team with a subpar offense can beat an offensive team with a subpar defense. The KD Nets and Celtics are a good example of this

If you really want to go to the nfl example look at drew Brees’s career. This debate is pretty silly and relatively easy to find out the answer for. Somebody with NBA reach just has to do it: -Make a histogram of playoff teams by regular season drtg rank. As far back as the official data allows. -If you want to make it more illustrative, make additional histograms for each playoff round until you get to finals winners. If defense is as important as we think it is, we should see a greater percentage of teams at the top ranks the further in the playoffs we go.

You need shooters around him so he can dive on pick and rolls, clean up the offensive glass for second chance points and work out of the dunkers spot. Him and Towns are a bad combination. He's a drop big like Dikembe Mutombo. He's not the switching versatile defender that a Bam or AD is. So you have to build your team with that in mind.

Every NBA Champion had a great defense in the playoffs. Its a different brand of ball in the playoffs. Games are way more scrappy than reg season games. Lol Bro wanted to point out the Rockes in 2018 when they defended their ass off. Capela was only there for rim protection and catching lobs. Tucker, CP3 (at that point) and Ariza were great defenders and even Harden was defending guys in the post well. I have submitted work to published that goes in depth on this topic. Stats back up the point that defense matters. The most important feature in the model I conducted shows the amount of points the opponent scores is the most important feature in determining if your team is successful or not. If you cannot stop your opponent from scoring efficiently, you will not be successful. So, yes, defense wins games. The reason we say otherwise is because of the medias obsession with offense. When Lebron has a bad shooting night, people question Lebron’s ability as a scorer. No one talks about how effective and successful the defense’s scheme was in the game. There are a few good numbers to say a defense is good How much do they lower an opponents field goal % What is their opponent points per possession and points per 100 possessions What is their opponents true shooting percentage How many uncontested shots do they allow How many turnovers do they force How many points do they allow in the paint I think that if a team is top five in most of those areas, they are elite. You can play slow and allow less points per game, I think points per 100 possessions, points in the paint, opponents field goal and true shooting percentage, turnovers forced per 100 possessions, those are better ways to say a team is elite on defense. A championship team needs two things on defense Make it hard for the other team to score And also force turnovers which lead to easier fast break opportunities. Any great team, showtime Lakers, Bird Celtics, Jordan Bulls, Heatles, Spurs, big Three Celtics, Warriors, Bucks, Nuggets. You need a defense that helps you win games

It’s really simple honestly u need both. In the playoffs sometimes players have bad games or have amazing games. If a player on your team is having a bad shooting night towards the end of the game u might need an important stop to stay in the game if u got a bad defense u probably gonna lose that game. In reverse if a player is having an insane shooting night on the other team u gonna need players to score and keep up if not u gonna probably lose that game 🤣

Depends on the era. The 60s Celtics won nearly all of their titles literally being the worst offense and best defense in the game. So did teams like the pistons of the 2000s.. there is no team to win with the opposite being beat offense and the worst defense. Serviceable offense is all u truly need when u have great defense. It’s far more consistent to win that way than having top tier offense and bad defense. You atleast need average defense to win titles consistently. U see that clearly in the warriors last year compared to the year before. 2022 great offense and great defense= title. Next year, still great offense, but bad defense, eliminated in the 2nd round.

Imo I think that regular season defense really shouldn’t matter in this conversation. If it translates into a better defense in the playoffs, and you’re playing against more talented teams; that should prove you’re a good defensive squad. The cherry picking squads was weird cause you’re looking for outliers. This makes your argument even more invalid.

Just did a bit of research I only got down to 1995 but the best example to at least support agent would be the 95 rockets, they were the 14th ranked defense in the regular season and the 9th ranked defense in the playoffs. I can see where agent is coming from but I just think your defense can't be below average to win a chip no matter how good your offense is. Which side of the floor matters most is really irrelevant honestly because basketball isn't other sports, they both matter and in basketball the teams the win it all always have a great balance.

the 00' - 01" lakers are the only team i could find that had a below average defense and still won a ring albeit ranked 23rd. >it seems to be more like agents argument is the exact opposite since most finals winner have a top 5 defense
