📍 Betty Grable was an actress and dancer who was the most important girl in the World War II era.
Betty Grable was an American actress and dancer who was known in Hollywood as the woman with the most beautiful legs. As the number one pin-up girl of World War II, her swimsuit photo achieved iconic status and was included in "Life" magazine's "100 Photos That Changed the World" project. The beauty of her legs was so famous that her studio insured her legs for $1 000 000 and named her "The Girl with the Million Dollar Legs". The daughter of a very ambitious woman, Betty was groomed for stardom at a very young age. Her mother bleached her hair and gave her daughter a makeover to make her daughter look great in Hollywood. Her first film as the Goldwyn girl was "Whoopee!" Whoopee! Her youthful appearance soon made her a star in films playing the role of a college student. She became a very successful actress and soon became the highest paid female star in Hollywood. After a string of super hit films such as "Moon over Miami", "Springtime in the Rockies" and "Coney Island", she was photographed in her swimsuit showing off her shapely legs - an image that soon achieved iconic status.

I lived during Betty's popularity and believe me she was utterly loved by the public. You forgot to mention that she had a darling personality on film and her voice and dancing were so beautiful and wholesome in addition to her sexuality. She was a pure joy to movie fans.

She abused her children, hence why they were not close to her. Betty's mother abused her throughout her childhood and unfortunately, she carried on that cycle.

Insecure AND real. Studio heads tried using Marilyn Monroe brutally as "the replacement", and media pushed a Battle of Blondes. No luck! *Betty* - bless her🙏 - said to MM "I've had mine. Go get yours." They became friends.

I adored Betty grable she was a beauty I never heard that she was afraid of starring with anyone let alone men. She had nothing to worry about I guess we would love to be in her shoes you know June haver was a looker too. Together they made perfect dolly sisters. John Payne and da n Dailey were good leading men.

In one of her early movies, 'Old Man Rhythm' from 1935, Betty Grable does a TOE-TAP DANCE!!! Yes, she tap-dances on her toes! It's epic!

Enjoyed the video, thanks! And I've always thought the U.S. Postal Service should do a stamp of Betty in her famous bathing suit pose, as a way of celebrating her great contribution to morale in World War Two.

Mr. Narrator: you *still* don't know the meaning of "starlet"!? Shocking - and rude to STARS denigrated with such casual derision. Betty was very soon a *star* - not starlet - in her early career and for decades after. *Show respect!*

You are so right. Betty was bought up by the 'studio system'. Did you ever see Betty in the 1936 football musical "Pigskin Parade ? She didn't sing or dance in it, but she was on her way to the big 20th Century Fox musicals. A 14 year okd Judy Garland was also in that movie. Check it out .

Whenever I hear about an actress who has made terrible choices in the men she chooses to be with, I think that her relationship with her father was very likely not a good one. That seems to be true of all (or at least most) of us women, famous or not. I would have been interested in learning more about her father’s relationship with Betty.

There was no comparing Judy garland to Betty grable hands down Betty wins that debate.

I think they were both equally talented and lovely. Betty’s brand of beauty was more traditional, but Judy had such extraordinary eyes. Betty was the better dancer but few could compete with Judy’s amazing singing (Mahalia Jackson perhaps and just a few others). They both were blessed with beautiful gams, but no one, before or since, has been able to hold a candle to Grable’s incredible legs. Wowzer.Judy was the far better actress, though. Betty had a handful of nominations and awards for acting, almost all very minor. Judy was nominated for two competitive Oscars and should have won for “A Star is Born,” but voters somehow felt deglamorizing Grace Kelly in “The Country Girl” was more of a commendable task. Odd, since that’s the make up & costume departments’ achievements. Kelly was good but Garland was extraordinary. At least she did win a non-competitive Oscar for her work as a juvenile star. I firmly believe Ms. Garland & Michael Jackson were the most talented child stars of all time.

@@shimmeringfairydust3275 I thought Grace Kelly was drab and ordinary in “The Country Girl” ; it’s a crime Judy Garland didn’t win.

@@davidallen508 So true! I like Princess Grace just fine, but I totally agree with your take on her performance in “The Country Girl.” It was very sad how different their lives were: Judy came a poor family, and she was working at a very young age, just to be able to eat & pay the rent. Treated abysmally by Hollywood and her mother - they used her until there was not much left. Meanwhile, Grace Kelly hailed from a very prosperous, influential family. Hollywood treated her like the princess she ultimately became, and that was fine, bcz women are rarely treated well in Hollywood, especially back then. But Judy, Judy, Judy…she was simply one of the most talented individuals this country has ever produced. And yet was drugged, forced to smoke high quantities of cigarettes (murder on the voice) so she wouldn’t eat and was never really respected. Just awful.

I am old enough to remember that Betty Grable was one of the popular movie stars of the 40's & 50's. She made millions for 20th Century Fox Studios. Everybody knew who Betty Grable was. She was no great actress and she didn't try to be. She was all personality and 'legs'.

Some of this I think is BS. She was said to have said, I can sing a little and dance a little. She said she had a little bit of looks but was not on the big beauty league. She always thought of herself as a song and dance girl. Zanuck tried to push her into dramatic stuff but she didn't feel she was up to it. I think she did good in I Wake Up Screaming in 1941. She felt more comfortable as a singing, dancing light comedy star. And that's what she did best. That was her comfort zone. And then look at Marilyn wanting to be a dramatic actress. That didn't go so well for her. Betty was the big blond at fox during the 40s and early 50s. Then came Marilyn's turn though out the 50s. They were both beautiful, talented women.

Judy Garland, over rated in my opinion. Betty was good at what she did, famous for the troops in WW2, saw her in The Dolly Sisters when very young.. The Hollywood fantasy factory made over to fit their unreality. Abortion and unstable relationships. Age 83
