in the manga, shigaraki's speech bubbles were always shaky, but after he found his confidence and remembered everything, they became normal. And one thing I really like about the dub for this episode is that shigaraki's voice change is a lot more noticeable than in the sub, at least imo. His voice is a lot less raspy and more clear now. He also sounds a lot like kimbley from FMAB now lol

Something a surprising amount of people dont really put in the forefront on Shigaraki's backstory is the fact that even after getting picked up by All-for-One, Shigaraki DID hold himself back from using his quirk and satisfying the itch. Even removed from his memories, he had the conscience. He COULD have been helped if anyone else rescued him on the street. Everything wrong with hero society culminated in Shigaraki's life

My favourite thing about all this is that ReDestro enters as this powerful, suave villain, and leaves as Shigaraki's eager simp and pay pig. Absolutely iconic.

6:53 idk if you noticed since a lot don’t but this is the moment his voice changes. In the manga Shiggy had shakey speech bubbles with a scratchy font but in that panel it transitions from scratchy to smooth bubbles with a bold font to show that now he’s been liberated and the “lead in his heard” is no longer holding him back. Another common acceptance in the community is the reason why his hair turned white, it originally turned blue which going from black was it actually turning an off white because, as AFO said, he’s been holding back his memories and ergo holding back his power. That’s why we’ve never seen him destroy buildings or why his decay can spread, because of the doctor reminding him he goes on a personal journey this arc and uncovers all those memories remembering the extent of what he can do, and so when he unleashes the full power of decay his hair goes from off white-blue to fully white as the decay destroyed his hair pigment cells. You can see this as his arms are completely purple and busted (looking a lot like deku there, another parallel aye?) as the decay affects his own body when it gets too strong. I couldn’t time stamp it coz it’s only in the extended video on Patreon but when Shigaraki says “destroy it all” you can actually see how his arm starts to get cracks and cuts in it and blood sprays out of it because the decay is so strong it starts fucking his arms up. It’s not enough to kill him, but much like deku, it still hurts like hell.

I think the reason behind shigaraki’s not getting help is something called the bystander effect. The gutter punks say that there’s too many hero agencies cropping up now, that neighbourhood is flooded with heroes so they just think “why should I help? A hero will do it” and just walk away but then the thing is the heroes think the same thing “I should use my quirk for something more important, there are other heroes better suited for helping lost kids”. The idea is that if a bystander in a crowd witnesses a crisis or problem and could help they don’t because “I’m just a bystander, there’s someone else in the crowd who’s an actual hero and they’ll help” and if everyone has that thought and acts selfishly rather than sharing that personal responsibility then that hero never actually ends up stepping in because everyone is a “bystander”

I was actually playing Arkham and in one of the audio taps, a gangster hires a random bum to start social riot. He says something along the lines of, "Just get in there, rile people up, break something, then leave. No one ever wants to throw the first stone. But once it tossed, people have no problem following." tl;dr Leadership is scary.

This episode actually corrected a detail the anime had been missing, AFO's quirk grants him a hole in both hands, since that's where he needs to make contact to steal/give quirks, it took all the way to the end of Season 5 carry it over from the manga. It's also why Nine's gloves had a hole in the center, Hori designed Nine to have the hand holes from AFO as well, but the movie didn't keep it.

The anime omitted a tie-in for Heroes Rising. When the doctor says he will give Shigaraki power, he also adds that he needs Shigaraki to deliver something for him, while one of Hawks' feathers listens in. That's why Endeavor and the heroes were ready when the League was transporting Nine, Hawks sent an anonymous tip.

I love how you dissect all the little cool dope elements and details that MHA has to offer. It is really cool getting to hear your thoughts on all of this because you are definitely very intelligent. While I like a good amount of reactors a lot of them just sit and do the basic casual reaction and a lot of them aren't all that intelligent. I am not trying to trash anyone but its just true. You are one of the very few reactors that I can be very happy to hear all of the discussions for and you are one of the only people that pause and put out your thoughts immediately opposed to saving it all for after the reaction. I believe the censorship basically goes like this - this show cannot show the act of dismemberment. However, it can show remains or the aftermath of it, so long as it's (mostly) unrecognisable as a human being - ie, even though you KNOW that pile of body bits used to be human, they have to do a lot of designing to make sure the human bits aren't detailed enough to be identified. Same goes for ReDestro cutting off his legs - you see the blood, you see he doesn't have them, but you're not allowed to see him cut em off. Censorship rules are weird and arbitrary, but that's how it usually goes.

@@AGoodwinTV fun fact, in the super dark widely renowned Batman series from the 90s, the censorship rules required that no impact could ever be seen on-screen, so they used white flashes on the moment of impact to cover it up. Not only did it mean the impacts just felt harder, but it was also an incredibly unique way to censor without censoring. I believe they also couldn't show firing guns so they used the same effect, with a bright light acting as a muzzle flash but never TECHNICALLY seeing a gun being fired or a person being punched.

These past few episodes have just been pure quality, this season totally stands up to the rest of the show even with the production issues. The new white hair on Shigaraki looks amazing, I love the design change. This is why you were confused as to who was destroying the city with white hair in the intro of one of those Class 1-A vs 1-B Arc episodes earlier in the season.

I argue it's definitely the "worst" season so far, but a "bad" season of MHA is better than most other anime. At the end of the day this season was always going to be the set up for Season 6 which is where the meat of the action will be. The info gained/narrative advancement during this season was great for sure though.

@@solodolo7161 at the very least, it’s the “worst” in terms of adaptation. I personally think that season 1 will still be the “worst” season (by MHA standards, which also could apply to this season) mainly because it was just a set up season for everything to come, and it was also the shortest.

What happened to Shiggy is known as two things: the Kitty Genovese effect or the bystander effect. It was named after Kitty Genovese, who was murdered in an alleyway and was heard by dozens of bystanders, who all assumed someone else would help (hence why it is also called the bystander effect). Everybody assumed a hero or police officer would help Shiggy, so they did nothing. Also, I find it funny that AFO said “I am here,” to Shigaraki. But, in hindsight, was very clever and sneaky. He said All Might’s catchphrase, the then number one hero. In turn, AFO was subconsciously setting himself up to be portrayed as a hero to Shigaraki.

AFO is what is known as a dark empath. They are a culmination of the dark traits like psychopathy and empathic traits. They are THE most dangerous kind of people even above psychopaths. Mainly because they are completely sound of mind and are VERY difficult to detect. So having mental barriers around them is shall we say…difficult. And they can be VERY manipulative with how they can tell how you feel AND use it. His words are hallow but ring true, or the reverse. And it creates a gigantic pool of charisma. As he raised Shigaraki, he started breaking down his morals through his resentment and made him an entitled brat. He humbled him, taught him how to build himself up and find what he was invested with. Freedom. Not just for himself but for his friends. (Because deep down he still has that deep seeded care behind all this.) All to create the same mass of charisma AFO had. And the biggest problem is that they are so charismatic, that you run into the problem of episode 2 of this season. We reach the point of wondering how the hell you resist that. And it goes to show just how brilliant AFO really is. Bit of speculation but this is where it’s relevant. There was a panel where a gentleman visited the Shimura home. And this gentleman VERY well could have been AFO. (They couldn’t exactly hide it if they showed it in anime so I assume they want to keep it ambiguous.) He was likely LOOKING for toxic homes using his now weakened empire. He may have been working as the head of the company Kotaro worked for. And something as simple as inviting the boss for dinner could’ve sealed the families fate. Because Shigaraki was a late bloomer for getting decay. Pat the kid on the head, and it’s all set from there. Not confirmed. But a high possibility. There’s no way AFO found Shigaraki and his home of hands without some serious intel.

I’d feel like shit. Shigaraki went from a petty little thug with no real will to an actual king revered by thousands of people. Scary as hell.

This episode really shows just how terrifying The League- or now the Paranormal Liberation Front is. By the way, I've been waiting for that reveal since you started making jokes about the League's name. I personally love the name, and like the reasoning behind it. They don't want to be called villains because that's what the society they hate calls them, they are their own people. I like seeing that Shigaraki was the one to say the reasoning. It makes him feel even more competent as a leader. He was good with being a leader through emotion and trust but now he also seems to be more strategic and smart, leader-wise. (It's also nice that Spinner got some credit for the name. In the Endeavor Agency Arc he's shown to be giving input on how well they're doing. It seems his angle of being the "normal person" could work out. He could use that to persuade more people to join the cause. )

In this Shigaraki situation, there’s even more of a risk for helping him considering the unpredictability of quirks. A normal 5 year old is probably harmless, but in this universe a kid could kill you in an infinite number of ways, even if accidentally.

As a children social worker, I will say do not underestimate how prevalent the idea of "Someone else will deal with this." Is. There were several serious cases such at Victoria Climbie and Baby P which showed how professionals do not communicate concerns - and resulted in legislation being introduced in the UK to mandate safeguarding networks for communicating concerns. This is doctors, social workers, nurses, teachers and police. Now imagine what that is like for people without innate duties to protect.

The direction they are taking Shigaraki is really interesting. Like he went from some random privileged criminal, I mean privilege in the sense of he seemingly had all he needed thanks to All for One, to the symbol of the dark side of freedom. I am too excited for Seaon 6.

Suddenly the heroes seem to be the underdog as every death is a loss for them and with the PLF having nomus, an army, quirk destroying bullets, and a stronger Shigaraki the loss of heroes I'm sure will be heartbreaking.

An interesting thing about this episode in regards to the manga is that you'd see the PLF Rally take place and all the power that the League has gained, and then cut back to the kids with Bakugo and Todoroki giving their interview (which happened in the Christmas episode). The arc switch up this season mixed it up. But knowing everything that happened in MVA and going back to 1-A learning about interviews and media before doing their Work Studies it really shows how important the Work Studies and preparing for the inevitable war is going to be. Something that's been pointed out to me is Shigaraki's outfit during the rally. He's wearing a suit and a red coat with fur. This is basically mimicking both AFO's outfit and Overhaul's outfit visually. But Shigaraki has shown that he isn't the type of leader who wants to mimic those examples of leadership. He's more himself in comfortable black clothing.

Red eyes and white hair indicate that someone has a mutation. usually mutations are incredibly powerful and don't come from the quirks of the parents. That would mean AFO, his brother, and eri are mutations. and now, we know that shiggy is also one. I wonder why he chose Shiggy. I mean he is starting to look like his younger brother, the first vestige.

Even if he used One For All, there wouldn’t even be that much of a power boost to push his body to its natural limits to warrant any changes to his physical appearance like with Eri or All For One.

@@khalidahmed8402 a quirk fusing together isn't really considered a result of a mutation the same way the others are. he had a transfer quirk and AFO is basically a mutated better version. so I'd say AFO's brothers quirk isn't a result of a mutation and that he just has white hair, as he lacks certain qualities that people with mutated quirks have.

With the people on the street ignoring shigaraki, I think that most people seriously understand the bystander effect. It can be unexpectedly hard to step out and act to help someone just because many others are around, studies have shown that given the exact same situation many people will abstain from helping when others are around, just because they are around. Particularly in a generally good society where the consequences for not helping are not considered that bad from the perspective of a bystander.

i cant help but remember shiggy's epiphany during the end of season 2, and the fact that while clearly understanding and unpacking his frustration with the public's security and safety they feel do to having a symbol of peace when he could easily kill tons of people before any help would arrive, and i wonder if part of that was his frustration that no-one could see that deku was in danger since he backed off so easy once uraraka showed up. he's a total psycho but it's just weird how much reverence for compassion there seems to be underneath all that callousness AfO instilled in him his whole adolescence. it really is a mystery as to what he truly desires if he can easily find contradictions in his dreams within seconds of stating them clearly i.e. like saying he wants to destroy everything but leaving the desires of his comrades alone, or threatening deku's life for an immature statement but backing off the second he's confronted by someone else who cares

New York is a fun place. Everyone isn't NICE but most everyone is KIND. I think people will be shocked at how a New Yorker can both loud and rude when talking to you but will do everything in their power to help you, guide you, and protect you the moment you need it.

That's my experience as well. When people walk up to me in the street there my first thought is "what do they want from me," but when it turns out to be something benign like asking for directions I will go out of my way to help. On multiple occasions I've seen crowds gather together to debate what is the best route for the lost person to take to reach their destination lol.

Something I really like with Shigaraki's outfit at the end of this episode. he has a suit and tie, like AfO, and he has a cape with a fluffy bit around the neck, which is very reminiscent of Overhaul's outfit. AfO is an obvious teacher for Shigaraki, but Overhaul also had a huge impact on his growth. The outfit, imo, shows that he his growing from his encounters, he is learning and keeping those experiences with him to push himself forward. However, the anime cuts out one small line from Shigaraki. He notes how his outfit is itchy. Shigaraki might be carrying the experiences with him, but he doesn't want to simply be the next AfO or the next Yakuza leader, he isn't looking to fill the role of some big villain. In his freedom, Shigaraki is simply looking to do as he pleases, destroy whatever he wants and live his life on his own whim. It's such a tiny detail, but I think it's such a shame the anime cuts Shigaraki's line out >:c

6:21 Take a look at this. These are the hands of the two thugs that Tomura just killed, but if you count, you see there are five hands. That fifth hand is Tomura’s grandmother’s hand, Nana Shimura, who AFO killed. AFO for whatever reason, decided to give Tomura her hand, and that hand, Nana’s hand, is the one that Tomura wears on the back of his head.

Shigaraki's power display and the sheer awe he exudes is amazing. He looks like a symbol, and the pure white hair only adds to that. People have theorized the reason his hair changes is due to his quirk killing the pigments in his hair. Symbolically it goes from black as a kid to the light gray-blue after killing his family to signify his first big step to his final state. Then the white hair shows his ascension to who he is. And there are a lot of people that say his hair went straight from black to white in the manga but I don't think that's the case because in the cover for volume 3 I believe, the one that has the USJ arc, his hair is the light gray-blue. This was way before the anime came out and before it was even in production I think, because it would have caught up to the manga way too quickly if it was in production. (Also, the Deku broken purple hands he has at the end, yet another parallel)

This episode reminds me of a study that was done after a hit and run in 2011, where no one helped and the victim ( a toddler ) later died in the hospital. I think it was in China but I am not 100% sure. The study showed that 71 % of the people they questioned believed that day no one helped because they were afraid to get in trouble for it. In 2006 there was this Case where a man took an injured women to a hospital to help her. But the women then suddenly blamed him for the injury and sued him. She won in court.So it sent a message to other people In that country to not help others. Here in Germany you are protected from that if you don’t Act irresponsible or with ill intent. So that people won’t hesitate to help someone. But you can be held liable if you don’t provide help although you could have. This is however a bit more complicated than just not offering help. But really sad that this needs to be done so people want to help others . And in this anime there is also your own life at stake. So there is a much higher risk. You could actually die from an uncontrollable quirk. Considering his age and the blood on his hands I am not sure if I would help him personally if I lived in their world. But I am still at wow that no one called the police or a hero. Like that’s the least you can do without risking your own health and safety.

So I can’t remember everything I wanted to say you missed that’s useful to know, but I’ll say what I can remember: On the Liberatiom Army’s basement stage, you’ll notice Shigaraki is wearing a business suit like AFO, and a fluffy jacket similar to Overhaul. In the manga, there was a small moment where he commented about the uniform being itchy, showing that he isn’t like any of them and is becoming his own villain.

You keep saying how it’s interesting that this arc comes out in nowhere in tone as the previous seasons are less gory and also less constantly dark in tone but in the manga the tone shift was crazier. Here endeavours agency introduces the hawks conspiracy and the MLA and shows the whole league with them, which reduces the tension as through MVA you know the end up cooperating somehow, and you see toga and twice alive when in MVA we didn’t know if they’d make it at the time. But also, the arc rearrangement means all of this prepares you somewhat for a villain centric arc. In the manga we cut from joint training with bakugo and shoot getting their licenses to the MVA arc where Shigaraki destroys the mha logo and then the league goes on to slaughter a cult with spilled blood everywhere lol. And all of a sudden, with no preparation, we get thrust into the villain side which works so well coz you’re so unprepared for how rough they’re living and how violent and grim their lives are. Every instant of gore in this arc in the manga just left me like “WOAH OK” whereas in the anime I think the only real instance like that is Shiggy’s flashback since they keep telling you the family got killed by him so you either expect a twist where that didn’t happen or you expect that to be the case but they cut to black or something since we already know the outcome, but instead they tell you that’s what happened and just show it in excruciatingly bloody detail anyway, it’s some really effective shock value but I think the censorship for most of this arc combined with the rearrangement sort of dampens that gritty tone it had in the manga version.

Shigaraki's speech bubbles were always shaky in the manga. But after he found his confidence and remembered things, the bubbles became normal. Both the dub and sub represented his different way of speaking greatly. Shigaraki destroyed a city with one blow and now has an army on his side. Truly built different.

It's such a shame that the anime didn't give this whole Arc proper justice, a lot of things were cut, like Spinner's character progression, or Redestro's entire character basically. I can only assume that the higher-ups of Studio Bones didn't believe that the audience would like that the hero students were out of the focus for too long, which is partially true for the Japanese viewers. But even so it is still a shame that such a highlight of the story (a villain takeover nonetheless) had to be cut short for the sake the Class A vs B Arc and also to promote a freaking movie.

You touched on something I really like about Deku Vs. Overhaul and Shiggy Vs. Re-Destro. They're practice rounds for each other. Overhaul -- Can instantly dismantle you with a touch of his hand. Just like Shigaraki. Re-Destro -- Superior physical strength that increases in percentage increments. Just like Deku.

One thing that I actually really like about their new name is that it has relevance and political pull within the universe. As opposed to just being some flashy name like "Shadow Cell" or some catchy shit like that that has no actual meaning outside of being a name or maybe a Japanese play on words. Also it's pretty catchy in Japanese

He didn't find him as soon because the tragedy happened at night, not until the next day. Also quirks are unjust and random, there's nothing suspicious about that, because that could happen to anyone else around that world

@@leeleelee7878 Quirks are hereditary, not random, mutations like Eri's are rare, and according to AFO Tomura's quirk is a mutation, it is interesting that he has a mutation. Tomura Quirks revealed himself when he was 5, late by anime standards. AFO A forward planner who loves to be in control. It would be a very big coincidence that a Quirk appeared in Nana's family, quirk that could lead to such a tragedy and the AFO knew exactly where to look for Tomura after the incident, and found him exactly after the incident, ideally when he felt loneliness, despair and helplessness. Suspicious, I think Tomura didn't have a quirk and the AFO got him earlier gave him power and watched until the ability was released

@@arekzacharski1507 Yes I meant mutation quirks, random could also mean you either inherit from one parent or another or both. Plus if afo gave him earlier, tenko would've reacted to him differently when he was reaching out to him for seeing him in the "second" time. It would also be cheap writing if afo simply orchestrated everything, the best writing of shigaraki's tragedy should be a mixture of both unjust nature and then afo's involvement, this way he would parallel deku more who embodies one of the series core themes of natural inequality

ooooh did this episode accidentally get uploaded early? half the comments are from a week ago and half are from the last couple minutes, lol Also it just hit me like a truck that we are basically caught up already. It feels like so recently that I found your channel when you uploaded mha episode 4. It's been a wild ride, Really enjoy your take on this show with careful thoughts about the morality and motivations of the many characters. It feels so much better than watching people react with basic comments like "nice animation there" or "oh dude, that power is cool" or screaming unintelligibly during fight scenes. The quest for meaning out of every episode makes a huge difference. As this show is going to be at least on hold, I would personally really enjoy your take on Hunter X Hunter if you have an interest in going through another anime with some depth of character and interesting moral dilemmas.

MHA's manga has sorta been back and forth in regards to Shigaraki's hair color. Whenever Hori would color it, it would either be light blue, grey or white. But it remains white from the villain arc onward (minus Heroes Rising, since they didn't know yet). Anime-wise, Shigaraki's mass decay was so destructive it killed the pigment cells in his hair along with damaging his arm.
