Such a sad story... And to think it wouldn't have had to be such a massacre if the men had a more competent leader (Lord Lucan by many accounts was held as too timid and even cowardly by many of the other military leaders) and had the messenger been able to control his hatred for the man a bit better as to more effectively communicate the orders he was given to take to Lord Lucan (as Lucan was confused by the orders and unclear as to which enemy position to attack, the messenger pointed to the general direction and Lucan misunderstood it to mean the much heavily armed and fortified enemy position... Although while the messenger being so unclear is bad, Lucan being so out of the loop on the goings on of the battle to send his unit to attack the wrong enemy position is just unforgivable and shows he wasn't paying enough attention on what was happening in the war) or Lucan not been so timid as to order the captain of his unit to not attack except with his express orders (because Lucan apparently was really timid, not that he actually had to join the charge which helps explain why so many of the military thought him an utter coward) so that Captain Cardigan could have used the earlier opportunity to attack the retreating Russians before they reached a hill full of left behind Turkish cannons 😑 That last part is what really condemns Lord Lucan IMHO, to deny your subordinate who is the one in the middle of the action and able to see and exploit opportunities that need to be exploited the moment they present themselves, to actually leave standing orders that completely prevent such actions even when warranted, is just utter insanity and could have disastrous results (as they sort of did, the suicidal charge wouldn't have been necessary had they attacked the retreating Russians earlier) The more I read about military history the more I realise how idiotic warfare can be at times and how much of the most needless suffering and death in war is caused by communication issues and/or clashing/incompatible personalities... There are many *many* real stories about military leaders sending men to their deaths simply because disliking said men (often by giving them orders to attempt almost completely impossible tasks with far too few resources to actually achieve their goal, at least not without massive loss of life), because of their own hubris, because of their own need for glory or even just because the leader has gone insane but no one dares to question them because of the high position and connections 😔

We, the unwilling, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing. We the unwilling, led by the unqualified to kill the unfortunate, die for the ungrateful. Thought those two fit. Also I love that poem. It is kinda sad but at the same time it speaks of the honor of the soldier.

Perhaps more terrifyingly we can be both, or neither, as well. Humans can vary so wildly from person to person that Aliens could be forgiven for thinking we're just an alliance of species that somehow look similar. And that's before consideration of how deadly and difficult our world might be compared to most other life-bearing worlds
@@UNSCPILOT yes but one has to wonder, is this hostile environment needed to create sentient life in the first place, the hostility making it so that the smarter the species the better chance at survival. Not to mention the wide variety of evolved techniques that we can observe in nature. If yes we'll them there you go, but if it's not that opens so many doors, and probably would take far longer for a less hostile world to workout sentience. In the end all we are can be boiled down to a collection of code in a quarternary system, so all it needs is time. Put monkies at a typewriter and eventually they will write Shakespeare.
