In this new video we explore how to do aikido using yonkyo to destroy your attacker. Lenny Sly sensei of the #roguewarriors training compound teaches us a brutal approach to using yonkyo to taking out an attacker. Sensei shows us this very effective yonkyo off of katate dori and moving into tenkan. Once in position break the attackers grab with the non grabbing free hand from below, at that point you'd tenkan into the attackers shikaku (blind spot). Take hold of the uke's neck lead him around to apply the yonkyo directly to his face. At that point apply the yonkyo abruptly to his upper lip just under his nose and apply as much pressure need to down the uke. From there execute a pin if needed or if applicable.

Law enforcement used to be taught a similar technique to get passive resisting protesters out of the middle of the street of they were sitting down. Lifts them right up! This is the first time I've ever seen it taught in this manner, and certainly the first time I've ever seen taught in an Aikido dojo. Great job, Lenny!

Hey alright! Yes indeed this application is very brutal, Shihan Reynosa applied it to me several times while I was his Uke, and the application to my neck/Jaw, my neck formed a swell the size of a golf ball, I thought a wisdom tooth was being pulled Lol! But seriously I am glad I learned this one too, and I have taught my senior students this one, when he did Sayu Nage to me in demo, he applied it to the same place, right under the nose as opposed to under the chin, ouch!!!

Thank you Lenny I have never been a fan of the traditional yonkyo myself for me I find it too finicky and too technical like you have to mess around with it to make it work not like kotegaishi or ikkyo when after a while you instantly get it every time and I have been doing aikido for about four years and I still cant get yonkyo I have just decided to leave it. You have just given me a new technique to practice in my Aikido class this Tuesday thank you very much =).

Dominik Doherty yonkyo and like many aikido technique is not always about pain. Control is most important, your uke not able to get up rather when causing pain. Many time on bigger uke with bigger arms pain is not the way to do it on yonkyo. Is about to controlling ukes shoulder on the ground and not able to get up. Pain is just bonus.

Jay, Lenny never suggests that all fights start with wrist grabs... He understands street defense as well as anyone. Any one of these techniques are effective on the street just by the way a thug comes at you. He teaches what works and what doesn't, and the effectiveness of being able to improvise. There is no time to do the little waltzes Aikido teaches. The great thing about Aikido is that you can expand and improvise and like other forms of martial arts, develope your own versions that work on the street. Many forms of martial arts can be revamped to suit a street situation.

This is a nice variant of Yonkyo. Thanks for showing this! Unfortunately, My hands are a little small to be able to grip someone's face/molars from the front. I like how the technique has the hands ending up in opposite directions. I also like your version of the standing pin at the end. Do you think the hand that is on uke's neck should be continually pushing against his neck rather than cradling it? That way the hand that is on uke's face is moving in an opposite direction to the hand that is on uke's neck.
@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13

+Clare Din there's pressure from both ends which makes the application to the face that much more effective. And your hand are not to small, you can still do this waza.

I really enjoy Lenny's videos but I can't explain exactly why as his style is a bit over the top for me. Reminds me of a sign outside RAF Bruggen, " Your job in peace is to train for war. AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT". I've had Yonkyo on both arms simultaneously. This caused me to fall to the floor and tap out vigorously for several seconds after it had ceased to be applied. I admit to being curious as to how this form of Yonkyo feels!

hey no disrespect intended sensi sly but have you thought about turning down the volume on the intro and also reducing its length? i think over a minute is too much. perhaps you might want to get your regular viewers opinions on it. besides that you are the number one go to guy for aikido on youtube. i admit i was put off you when i first saw your videos but when i saw the way you actually did aikido i knew you were the real deal and the right person to give us aikidoka a dose of reality. and anyone whose pure aikido waza is as smoooth as yours cannot not love the art. but i an glad you toned down the 'bluster' 😆 i wish you can come to the uk sometime on a teaching/training tour. can i also ask your opinion of sensie salahuddin mohammed who does aikijutsu and focuses on breaking internal structure? i'd appreciate your views, if not directly about the sensi, then about that approach. can it be incorporated in aikido, is it already there or is it incompatible?

Mohammed Hanif Yes I'm familiar with salahuddin and the Aikijujitsu he teaches. From what I've seen of him he appears to be pretty good. Although I've never trained with him so I can't say for sure how good he really is. As for him affecting internal structure... I would have to feel his technique to honestly say if he's capable of doing that with his technique. Can his method or approach work in aikido??? I can't answer that because again I haven't trained with him to know his actual application of his abilities. I will say tho... I have experienced some what of what your asking from a couple of aikido Shihan and I didn't really feel anything magical.

THE ROGUE WARRIORS - Where Warriors are FORGED i actually love your videos. they are fantastic. some people mind the swearing etc of your more combative videos but i see it as a great differentiator between the 2 main ideas. both of them have equal amounts of truth in combat but aikido has a different 'culture' and you are very consistent which means you are more than aware of the protocol. i also like your tenshin videos because you clarify much of the mush in current aikikai aka 'hakama yoga' about 100% uke and 100% nage and not to mix the roles WHILE maintaining the idea that seniors train down to their classmates AND maintaining enough of the technique. hageshi up to the level they can accept. i know nothing of the specifics of current aiki politics. but its a sad state of affairs overall. i cant imagine hombu dojo in japan is as crap as many aikikai in the us. also, people who stick with aikido or any martial art deserve legitimate rank and to be recognized for a lifetime of commitment. but i think we both know that isnt always the case. here in the us, it seems they have to choose between gaining certification in an organization that may teach complete nonsense, or gain rank in an organization such that their rank may not be recognized if they train in japan. of course it may but i dont know... anyways.. long winded way to say I've watched all your vids and will continue to. keep up the great work. all "do", whether aikido, tkd etc. needs to be taken back.

I have been saying for years that the principle of yonkyo can be applied in different waza - it is in my book, but few follow. But you said normal yonkyo does not work well. That is true for me too, but don't get sidetracked and give up on it. It can work - I have seen super skinny small people do it amazingly well - there is some secret to it I believe. I saw/ met Gozo Shioda and his yonkyo was incredible. My ex, a small 6th kyu, the only thing she could do well was yonkyo; it hurt so bad everyone laughed but they failed to think - crikey - how can I learn that ....

Thanks for the video. Lots of negative comments from people without any notion of martial arts, self defence or training to achieve anything. As far as I understand the attack of grabbing is for training pourpose. After you train the technique with the partner in movement, you will be able to apply it on an attacker comming at you or standing in front as it can be seen in lots of street fights on KZbin. If you want to defeat a boxer and didn´t like the technique, go away. You can always trein punches.

I was working as a helicopter test pilot in Melgar (Tolemeida), Colombia for the DOS (Drug Interdiction Program) training the Colombian Army Aviation Battalion. While I was on weekend leave in Bogota I had a life threatening experience that will be embedded in my mind forever. Besides that, I had a hit out on me about a year earlier per some very good Colombian friends. Please tell me what you would do if you had two Colombian petty thieves (Bogota, Colombia in 2005) each grab a wrist and have a 38 caliber pistol to each side of your head. True story because it happened to me. I gave them what they wanted and as the second guy walked off to jump on the awaiting motorcycle, I pulled out my 32 cal. Beretta and commenced to wound/kill him. Bad luck was on my side, because when I chambered a round and pulled the trigger the round did not chamber (stove piped). His friends on the motorcycle screamed to him that I had a pistol, so he turned around and unloaded six rounds at me missing with everyone. The funny part is, I didn't budge. I had tunnel vision and only focused on the mission at hand. I am lucky that my weapon did not load because I would have been kicked out of the country. Afterwards a Blue Chevrolet Tahoe SUV like I had owned in flight school) drove by (Embassy security man) and told me to jump in so we could try to follow them to no avail. We went back to my vehicle where the incident happened and they took my weapon. The bystanders told them that I fired my pistol, but I told them to smell the barrel and they would see that that wasn't the case. Needless to say they took my pistol and found my second weapon 32 cal. as well) under the seat of my car and confiscated it as well. Was God on my side? I'd say so!

Why are you glad your weapon didn't load? If it were me, I would've been pissed my gun jammed. From your story, I would say you did the right thing on letting them have what they wanted which I don't know what it would've been since they didn't bother to search you and find your weapon. But if you wanted to gamble, then picking one of them to go around their back and use as cover and disengage his brain by breaking his neck and then use the weapon on the other guy which probably would've shot as soon as you moved and hopefully hit his partner in crime most likely would've happened but then again he could've ran and you could've used the dead one's gun and fire at him. Last but not least, put an bullet in their heads to make sure their dead.

with the unfortunate events in london, I would also love to see knife defenses for modern day knife attacks. Maybe even a video about awareness of surroundings and trusting gut instinct and things to look for (like body language...etc) Just some ideas :)

Nice try but way too much trouble to be effective. In a real fight you need a combo to be a natural reaction not a planned demonstration 15 second long.

Go for Muay Thai, boxers got no legs, easy win. I gotta admit, I used to practice Karate where I learned some type of Aikido technique that prevented me once from going full on someone = less problems.

Nope, they do not. In my opinion, i have never seen a fight whereby someone would be able to control another fighter in this manner. This style is mainly a self defense against someone who grabs you or is lunging at you (so you can grab and lead) otherwise, they are going to be moving, punching, kicking moving...all over the place and no opportunity to grab or lead them. It's just not practical or effective in most scenarios. My opinion, i've been around for 57 years and started in the fighting arts since i was 14 years old.

The problem with Aikido is in the idea synchronized training , and it is visible . People do not hold on but pull loose from attachment when they are even remotely street fighters . This is a definite knockout to Aikido ! i take and sift But I cannot endorse Aikido as a self defense method ever ! European Boxing is essential to a Martial Art ! No boxing - No Martial Art !

They also do not LUNGE punch with just one punch as shown in these techniques. In my opinion, it may work if someone is inexperienced and tries to push you or lunge at you, but that almost NEVER happens and yes, no one grabs you like this. If they grab you, they manhandle you (shoving and pushing or punching!).

Umm 😐. Won't work against a decent fighter. You're gonna get punched in the face doing this stuff. Not saying that you aren't a good fighter but you may not do as well as you think just using this imho. Good video though. That being said, I think that it is good for restraining someone especially if they are tired or drunk.

Sojto16 says who? My former sensei who was a direct student of Steven Seagal taught me this version of yonkyo. So are you gonna say that Seagal sensei's 7th dan in aikido is not really a 7th dan in aikido. Try to argue that with him or any of his student's throughout the years. So how is this not aikido???? is it because it's not applied to the forearm?

The effectiveness of this technique ends with "grab my wrist". I do not believe that Aikido works in a fight. I believe this because I train MMA (BJJ, Catch Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Boxing), I have also trained in TKD and I integrate that into my MMA. I spar and grapple at least twice a week and train about 4 times a week. I have never seen Aikido work in a fight, I have grappled with people who have studied Aikido (both guys who have solid bjj and guys who only had Aikido), the guys with solid bjj felt like bjj guys who occasionally tried a wrist lock and the guy who only studied Aikido felt like a complete novice who didn't know anything. I myself have experimented with some Aikido concepts and have recognized where they work and where they do not and that the biggest reason I could employ any of them has to do with my wrestling. If you want to study Aikido, fine, but develop solid boxing and wrestling first. Once you have solid fundamentals you may be able to use some of these less useful (on their own) styles.

Craig Jones Hard to remember, but I think I went down a rabbit hole. I was looking at ineffective nonsense martial arts and saw somewhere that someone said that there was effective practical Aikido, so I looked it up and, keeping an open mind, I watched it.

BTW I still think there may be some useful applications of Aikido, but only once you develop solid wrestling fundamentals.

Which is why the training progression was usually some form of grappling, then to ju jutsu, then, if lucky, aiki jujutsu. In the old days, only the brightest and most talented students (usually with a written recommendation from their current instructor) were allowed into the inner sanctum of aiki.
