Hook punch defense - Aikido that WORKS!

How to defend against a hook punch using aikido! This video gives one example how Lenny Sly would counter the hook punch attack. this is a technique that really works on the street. the throw is what we in judo call koshi guruma. I used it once against a guy on the street who came at me with a haymaker. I fell with him, but controlled the fall so that I landed hard on top of him. it knocked the wind out of him and he was done for the day.

It's not the momentum that is needed to perform Aikido. Momentum just makes it worse for the attacker. It's a committed attack. The shifting of body weight is more than enough to perform Aikido. You just never see it in most schools because they either don't know, or don't understand it. There are those that are so aware of body mechanics and sensitive that even the thought of making an attack is communicated to the Aikidoka.

Could you show this with uke having the other hand up as guard during hook punch. I want to see if u could wrap around his neck with his guard hand in the way, or would it slip off. I wasn't sure if he kept down so he could wrap around your back for ukemi purpose. Thanks for these vids!

Probably has something to do with him having attended Steven Seagal seminars, and having experience with Judo. First time I bring myself to comment, and first of all thank you very much for sharing with us such the practical, real life application of Aikido. Having said this, I've heard a lot a statement that I don't see as true: "yokomen uchi strikes aren't real life practical" or words to that effect. As I see it, the real life equivalent of a yokomen uchi strike I think it is someone trying to smash a bottle on another's head, be it on a top to bottom swing motion or in the same angle as a yokomen uchi strike. Would this be a fair statement, the way I'm seeing it? Looking forward to learn more 👍🏼😀

The problem with the techniques you showed is, that they all take much longer than a hook. You might counter a haymaker with that but not a hook. Also if your opponent doesn't drop his guard he can just shove you away.

Another great video, thank you Sensei Sly. I've been incorporating many of these aikido techniques into the application of my Shotokan katas. Or should I say cross referencing for validation. Though Shotokan is mainly known as a striking discipline the katas show many maneuvers that hint to their creators intent on dealing with grappling type defense and counter. This video points to moves 9-10 from Heian Shodan & your iriminage vid, with hand deflections resembles moves 25-27 from bassai dai. I like the real world presentations you give in your videos. Clear away all the fuss and bullshit people insert into martial arts and hopefully they remember why they walked into the dojo in the first place. good stuff brother. keep up the hard work with all your videos! I take alot of your concepts into my own Aikido studies. I do recognize that sweep type throw which I see as more of a "tripping" movement since your posting your leg out and the opponent falls over it rather then reaping or scooping the leg like is taught in schools of Traditional Jujutsu and Judo ex: (Osoto Gari). I wish all Aikido schools had the same Outlook on physical conflict resolution that Tenshin Dojo does I've attended seminars with Miyako Fugitani (7th Dan) and Kentaro Seagal (4th Dan) teaching and it was always a great experience. I'm part of ASU now but before studied under what was formerly a Dojin Aikikai associated dojo under Sensei Jim Wood of Riverside himself a student under Shihan Ron Grainville whom was a direct student of Suenaka Shihan. ASU is a very different experience and its core curriculum is very traditional only in Yudansha ranks and seminars do they deep dive a bit more in realistic street applications of Aikido something that I do not agree with coming from my first dojo that although is traditional still very much teaches the harder old style taijitsu techniques you never see in ASU until you reach higher ranks. I feel this is a serious mistake and a short coming of the organization so I teach it when given the OK by the head instructor as much as possible. I wish I was in Chicago I'd love to train with you brother.

With all respect, I love your videos, This is not a ""Hook"" this is just a swing , a real Boxers hook is thrown from very short range , Hes going to step in very close to the inside or outside and throw, a lot of times, out side the vision of his opponent. Arm bent at 90 degrees , by the time he see's it, its half way there , and there is almost nothing you can do except slip or duck .

Hi Mr. Lenny. I have been following you for a while and can relate a lot with what you show. But one thing... Like you I was told the hakama was to hide the feet. This was told so many times that it became to be believed as truth but I recently came accross an article that debunked this completely. The article is in French with some pictures and drawings and historical references and I will try to send it to you. Basically the only time the hakama had to be worn long was in the presence of say a high ranking person because wearing it long actually impedes movements so making it harder to assassinate the high ranking VIP. Otherwise it was worn inside the boots or somehow tied up to make it easier to move around. Let me try to send this to you...

The important things to mention, that weren't, are, A, you need time to enter n get the throw i.e.this won't work without seeing it early. A late defence can maybe koshinage but he will come to you. B, atemi, a strike to the side or back of his neck is best as you hook his head. C, his nonpunching arm best be deflected as you enter or your entry can be blocked, your head attacked on entry or your body or clothes grabbed and ripped as he is thrown. The level of force needed dictates whether you prevent or cause his head to be spiked into the concrete. A nasty variation is to stamp on a foot as you throw to break his leg. Have fun.

What about defending against uppercuts? Hook punches are still pretty wide, open, with the arm extended and liable to be captured. Uppercuts most closely imitate the stable, triangular kokyuu-hou movement/posture, so it seems they would be the most troublesome to deal with. It's basically like someone attacking you with kokyuu-hou, which is one of aikido's own weapons.

Awesome as always! If you have any doubt as to whether your videos are helping folks, don't. I know is having an impact on my Aikido training. I subscribed to channel. Hey, speaking of hooks, I see a resurgence of interest in boxing. A lot of people do it for fitness because it's a great way to loose weight and get in shape I guess. My question is: how would you deal with this situation with someone trained in boxing? They know how to punch, they keep their distance, they throw a lot of quick jabs. I've seen a lot of comments on KZbin saying a western boxing guy would destroy an Aikido guy. I am not so sure but would like to know your opinion on this.

To be brutally honest. Someone that’s trained in boxing would completely destroy an aikido, if that’s all the guy knew and trained in was JUST aikido. Most mainstream aikido people just train aikido and nothing else. Now if the aikido guy has street fighting experience or has trained in let’s say Karate, Tae Kwon do and was pretty successful in those. Then the aikido would probably be able to hold his own so to speak. Although very few aikido people today have a background in other arts.

Boxing works in the ring. If they are really keeping their distance and jabbing. Then you do the same and walk away. Most street fights are adrenaline fueled and emotional. Boxing techniques go out the window. Just my two cents.

Aikido is awesome, problem is the training methods are too static. Theres not enough free play like there are with two boxers in a ring. With free play Aikido becomes small circle grappling with 85% of traditional technique ineffective. Short punches and low kicks included in the mix that are still taught in Aikido but are not often mastered by Aikidoists.

The sweep as you called it, is tai otoshi. One of the staple moves in Judo. An effective maneuver to get the opponent to the ground. Without the sweep it looks like the Judo technique for O-goshi, and a more twisting version looks like Uki-goshi. It is surprising to see a tai otoshi in Aikido!

Koshi Guruma is a Judo Throw, but is really close to what you are explaining for your hip throw. Which would work better for your demonstration and still allow you to control the arm and then allow you to pin and control using your techniques. Not to mention the foot work for that specific hip throw is much more balanced in this case. Just a thought. The Tai-Otoshi variation you moved into toward the end is really effective. It is what we train here in our home dojo. I love how these two arts are so closely related in many areas. Keep the videos coming... they are always awesome!

It's funny how you mentioned that the two Arts are closely related and that is because originally Aikido, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu used to be all one art. It was called jiu-jitsu. Then jigro Leno and morishi uashiba ( I know misspelt their names) created Judo and Aikido from jiu jitsu back after 1882.

Great comment and from a technical stand point I agree. But the aikido world loves to complicate things and this is one of them. Just like when I was coming up in the beginning. Whenever someone would make a mistake. Sensei would come over if he noticed. He’d then demonstrate the technique using YOU as the uke. I was always against teaching that way. It does not help the student learn. And of course it’s about feeling the technique. Fuck that, that’s a stupid way to teach others. It’s smarter for the sensei to use the other guy to show the student making the mistake what they’re doing wrong. Aikido loves to play the mystical bullshit. Then they wonder why the art gets bashed.

Well, should change the title to "Haymaker or sloppy straight punch defense". I don't think this would be easy to pull off against an actual hook. Better off to duck, slip or block and counter. "Aikido that works...only after you turn it into Judo or Jiu Jitsu, with striking".

A teacher teaches. There has to be explanation for why he does it the way he does it. Otherwise he would be just another guy teaching hook punch defense. Each system is unique. It was very rude to say what you did. Maybe Mr. Sly should do a video on honor and respect.

Koshinage, traditional aikido has plenty plus variations, this is where aikido cross with judo

This is not a hook punch. It’s a wild goose haymaker. Any dog can defend against it. Pls don’t try this defence against someone who really knows how to throw a hook, else you might loose your teeth
