Welcome back to this art project, where I'm making a monkey using air-dry clay! For today's monkey business I'll be removing that aluminum core (well at least most of it) but first I repaired some cracks and built out the shoulders and chest a bit. Join me for a few minutes of relaxing sculpting in awesome time-lapse video!

Please SUBSCRIBE if you havn't already?!!? It's free and I'm trying to climb the ranks here on KZbin... in fact, it's my goal to reach 100,000 subscribers by 2019! Help me make that happen? Many people have helped in the past and play a part in this channel's success so far, I couldn't be any more thankful for that. So if you're kinda new and finding yourself to be enjoying these videos then perhaps you could pass something along to a friend, or post it to your feed so people can find this channel? Alone I'm powerless, but with your help there is a chance. Subscribe, then casually slip a video to a friend.
* this project is a casual sculpting demonstration using air-dry clay, where I show the basics I used for sculpting with that type of clay. My knowledge is very limited due to having only made a few things with it back when I first started sculpting in 2009. This project is unique as I normally use just polymer clay and will be returning to that clay shortly after this project is over

Yay for polymer clay stuff. :D The monkey is looking super excellent! So glad I was back online when you uploaded this. :) I had no internet nor cable service for about 40 hours to start the week due to the flooding. I am still very fortunate that was my biggest trouble/concern during the memorial day weekend. - Heidi

First of all i think it looksvpretty awsome. And i have a question, if you let it dry does the "collour" stay's the same or is it getting wither? And are you going to give it collour at all? And yes i like to see you doing some polymer clay again too. But this project is cool too

I recently sculpted an Easter Island Moai and used an armature. I have never attempted anything like...With that said, I used cardboard, layers of paper mache and tape as my armature. I sculpted the Moai with natural air dry clay and allowed it to dry and I had nothing but cracks. I wish I saw your videos before I started the whole process, but in the end, after watching your videos, I was able to save my Moai and he is now crack free (for the moment) But I am unable to remove the armature :( hopefully, he will survive. Thank you for giving step by step instructions. Now that I know, I can make more. And knowing is half the battle :)

Hi I've just watched this final video, which was great by the way, but I wanted to ask do you suggest an amature is always neccessary? Some I've made in the past were from one solid 'lump' of clay, thinking about it I guess the main reasons would be weight and amount of clay used? Well thanks again really cool I hope you do a new series soon.

Hello, I'm really enjoying watching your videos, very informative. I'm starting to do some sculpting myself but with Super Sculpey Living Doll clay. I'm thinking of doing a the same thing you did for the core (aluminum foil and tape) because I'm planning on sculpting a female head. So, my question is, since I'm using polymer clay can I bake it with the core?
@TheBroodingTom
@TheBroodingTom 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. In fact you have to in order for the clay to be supported during the baking, polymer clay gets VERY brittle during the baking process only gaining full strength after it completely cools.

how do you get it to not crack as it is drying? Me & my girls used the air dry clay from hobby lobby in the box like you had on this series. we made fairy house and stuff and everything cracked, so discouraging we worked so hard and was a big fail.
@TheBroodingTom
@TheBroodingTom 6 жыл бұрын
Hi I appreciate you commenting to let me know how it went for you. Is there any way you can share a couple photo's on my Facebook Page to get a better understanding of what happened? From what I can tell you even without seeing is that this type of clay has an extreme amount of shrinkage it undergoes during the drying process. If any of the clay is formed around a rigid armature is wont allow any shrinking at all to happen, causing huge cracking instead. Just so you know your project may not be a total fail as you can pack-in the cracking areas with more clay (it'll shrink again) but if you keep doing this until it stops you will have a solid piece like you wanted. This is the biggest downside to using water based clay and it's the very reason why I don't use it anymore. (this project was more to show how I "discovered" sculpting in general, how I started, and I only made a few sculptures using it) I now use Polymer Clay as it doesn't shrink nearly as bad. Let me know if any of this is making sense? I'm sorry things didn't go well this time around.... I had a very large, beautiful King Cobra EXPLODE in my Wife's Grandmother's kiln... it was devastating.. I was inexperienced with this same type of clay and did exactly what I wasn't supposed to, which was form the clay around a rigid wire armature.

Mine never dried completely without cracking. There was some areas on mine that were on the thin side thou. I was told it good to dry slowly also in a cooler room if possible. Mine was in the garage and we have a cool summer right now so it’s been drying slowly and it still cracked. But it’s all repairable, so not so worried.

No, all of these air dry potting clay sculptures are open at the bottom, like a "bell".
