For Led Zeppelin standards, this is kind of a weak album. In The evening is a good song, Fool in the rain has a memorable drumming pattern but the rest of the song is kinda average. Carouselambra is a unique song, you either hate it or love it. Overall FOR LED ZEPPELIN STANDARDS, not a good album....but still better than 95% of what the rest of the music industry would be able to produce. I am a musician and a music enthusiast and this is the only LZ album I don't feel the need to buy. The only one not being part of my collection

This album is more balanced instrumentally because JPJ not only played bass but also used synthi/key. It wasn't an 80's sound on purpose, it was made out of necessity because Page and Bonzo weren't always around. Carouselambra (unfortunately never live) and I'm Gonna Crawl are masterpieces, All My Loving of course with a profound background and for a change I've always been addicted to the simple catchy Fool In The Rain/US single. Have fun with all kind of good music!!! PS Evening might already be on the "military" predecessor; I found/find the first side a bit weaker.

The Inside Sleeve of this album was a bar scene in black/white, covered in Black Dots. Turns out, the Black Dots are water colored paint. If you take a wet brush, and drag it across the dots, colors come out. Found out by accident after spilling beer on the sleeve in the early 80's...(lol)

My older sister introduced me to Led Zeppelin in 1983 (I was 9 or 10) when she gave me a copy of In Through the Out Door. In the Evening was the first song on the album, so it was the first song I heard. I probably rewound and listened to it 10 times before I even let the tape play any further. It totally blew me away, and was my first "Favorite" Zeppelin song. Until I heard :Fool in the Rain" 2 songs later. I've had so many "Favorite" eppelin songs I cant remember them all any more. And this guitar solo was instrumental (hah) in inspiring me to become a guitar player. A couple of times it sounds like Page threw the guitar down a flight of stairs. So brilliant, Thank you, Shelly, rest in peace, I love you and I miss you every day.

This song makes me cry.. I think this was a message from Robert to Jimmy. "So don't you let her get under your skin" "it's only bad luck and trouble" " She don't show no pity" " I hear you crying in the darkness" " you can only blame yourself" " One day soon it's got to stop" Robert was angry at Jimmy bc of his addiction.. Bonzo was also drinking during this time.

@@tektoniks_architects I was just looking at the lyrics of Carouselambra, but not sure what to make of them.. I remember years ago after reading about Zeppelin's problems and looking at In the Evening, I thought: man that sounds like Robert singing to Jimmy about.... And I remember seeing a live concert where Robert turns to Jimmy, looks at him and sings loudly " One day soon it's got to Stop! Stop! Stop!" as Jimmy was playing drenched in sweat, and smiles at Robert..

This album is fraught with devastation; Robert's 5-year-old son passed away from a viral stomach infection. Robert was seriously (and understandably) lost as to what was the meaning of life and where did he fit and what did he want. Both Bonzo and Jimmy tried to help him refocus and come back to work; sadly, more destruction was to come. I love this song. It sounds hard and slightly otherworldly. The opening drone isn't Jimmy using the bow but a device called a Gizmotron effect that was created by two guys from the group 10cc. The hard crashes where you said it sounded like they let Jimmy out of his cage, was him raking the tremolo bar down hard across the guitar strings. They were indeed again ahead of their time musically in creating guitar and synth tones that foreshadow 80s techno-rock. The lyrics reference some of the pain and grief people go through in their lives regardless of the amount of fame or money they have. I like how your ear has become experienced in Zep's sound enough to recognize elements in the music. It's one of the many reasons why I often suggest people go in album/track order if they *really* want to learn the band. Instead, they jump throughout the catalogue and when they hear something from later in their discography, they're shocked and wonder how it's Led Zeppelin. I'm glad you guys get it. EDITED TO ADD: I'm going to make my case now for also doing CODA after this album. I explained it's importance to the catalogue in my previous email to you when I sent links for some live Zep. Please do finish everything - you won't regret it.

I bought this Album on the day of it's release in 1979. Don't know how you interpret them conforming to the 80s sound. Take Note: LED ZEPPELIN CONFORMS TO NO ONE OR ANYTHING! Fun Fact: There were 4 different covers for the Album. It was sold in a paper bag sleeve, a "grab bag"surprise if you will. The Bar in the photo was in New Orleans. BONUS: There were also 4 different paper inner sleeves for the Albums, featuring scenes from said Bar, illustrated in Black Ink drawings. You then take a damp sponge and swipe it over the sleeve, and the dampened surface magically colorized! Thus, a clue of what to do is found on the outside cover, a swash revealing color undertones on Sepia toned photo. 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦

I was just going to leave a comment about how Zep NEVER conformed to anything nor anyone ever. They were anti-conformist if anything. The only reason this album had more keyboards on it was because Jimmy and Bonzo were both in the midst of addiction at the time and the album suffered for it, though it went straight to #1 anyhow. With Page and Bonham absent, the album lacked the ‘balls’ of all the previous albums. Damn, I sure love Carouselambra, In The Evening and I’m Gonna Crawl (simply for Page’s guitar solo in it). ☺️

Does anyone recall that picture, it might have been taken around the time of Knebworth 79 and they are wearing soft blouson shirts and pants with pleats. The skin type jeans had been ejected, the raw blues were gone .... almost there is a lean into middle age and the image i get is of Robert Palmer playing this music with the girls in mini skirts doing a two step behind him .... JPJ had bought a new synthesizer which affected the overall sound of the album, along with it being recorded in ABBA's studio, where they were given free studio time. It's like every Zep album: totally unique

As you know Presence was a very Page forward album, it had no keyboards, and JPJ had only one writing credit. This album the roles switched. Lots of keys and piano and JPJ was very much in the forefront in writing as well. Also with the overall sound, it was recorded in Polar studios, which is where Abba recorded a majority of their albums.

To tale on the commentary...Plant and Jones showed up in Stockholm, Sweden to start revording ITTOD on time, and when Page and Bonham got there, the Album had mostly been written. To me, it was a unique collection of songs that with any of their other albums had that Zeppelin stamp and sound on it! Those 4 guys were Led Zeppelin!!

This is the only Zeppelin album I've ever purchased, and any other Zeppelin songs I own are from their previous albums. This song is great to listen to when driving on the highway!

This song is very similar to the sound Jimmy used when he recorded his 1st album with "The Firm" (82) ... The album was a disappointment to some, but for me personally, I enjoyed anything they put out! My fav on the album, "Fool In The Rain" makes my top 10 list!

Paul Rogers pulled Jimmy out of a dark hole, teeth all rotted, bone thin, all junked out and close to death .. you can see it in the live performances sadly. I think Jimmy would have died if it wasn't for Paul.

I love Caroselambra from this album. Yes, the 80's arrived. I did not appreciate it when it first came out.

this album has mixed reviews from their own fans.. some hated it, but those who knew how zep evolved between albums would take the journey & grown to love this "new" sounds, and might consider it as their best album, including me 👌

This album weaned me into LED Zeppelin, and I absolutely love it! I agree the sound evolved into the groove that was coming in the 80s. All the songs are stellar. I hope you react to these songs.

hello, the drop down in the guitar solo is a very special thing indeed . also the album art work is cool too there are pictures of the different variations of point of view of all the people in the room, and the inner sleeve had a cartoon veiw of the top of the bar in black and white, ( glass of whiskey and a book of matches and an ash tray with a dear john letter burning in it and if you licked your finger and rubbed the sleeve the colour would come through . all my best to you and yours from Liverpool

Yeah, it has an Art Deco, prohibition, depression era vibe to it. Zeppelin used a lot of Art Deco fonts and lines in their cover art. It can especially be seen on Mothership lp. Then again, we're talking about the Hindenburg Disaster that happened in '37. Same era. I don't think it's any coincidence.

@@peteroneill3993It fits. Booze in a brown paper bag. Just like the era. As a Zeppologist, I have deep theology on Zep aesthetics and nuance. There's a lot going on with the heavy/light, dark/soft, design aesthetics, heavy Romanticism in their lyrics, music, look, etc.

The knebworth live version was cool. They experimented with alot of different sounds. Together and independently. It was a precursor to 80s style heavy metal, but there were alot of other bands doing the same sound too. UFO, VanHalen, Ozzy, AC/DC......
