As an autistic person, I honestly feel like so many people overcomplicate it and hearing kurtis essentially say it’s “just different, you’re not better or worse than anybody else” made me very happy because that’s all I really do want. I just want people to treat me just like everyone else, not as an exception bc my brain works differently

This exactly. I'm seeing some quirky folks out there thinking they're "better" for having autism in response to bigotry, and while I don't think they deserve hatred, they shouldn't respond in such a way either. It's like, we literally suffer because of our autism and it sucks. Being seen as PEOPLE is all we really want.

@@nomoretwitterhandles yeah there’s people out there who act like different disorders/disabilities are “superpowers” or something like I’ve seen that said about OCD a lot and it’s like sure some things can heighten certain abilities or senses but it wouldn’t be a diagnosable disorder or disability if it didn’t cause a great deal of suffering. It gives self diagnosis a bad name when for so many people like myself, an immense amount of research is done before coming to that conclusion. Making autism seem like a benefit or merely a fun quirky manic pixie dream girl thing leads to inaccurate self diagnosis and people not taking it seriously
@bratgirlcoquettesissygirlypop Жыл бұрын
i was diagnosed on the spectrum at a very young age and people are surprised when they find out. people just have their own stereotypes about what it looks like. they either think autistic people are super “low functioning” (which is kind of an inaccurate term) or super smart geniuses. like dawg it’s a nuanced thing that has a SPECTRUM😭.i just want it to be treated like any other neurodivergent condition. i hate the outdated stigma that comes with it.

Im tired of seeing those 'idiot savant' characters as representation of autistic people.
@nomoretwitterhandles Жыл бұрын
@@omgmo1962 I hate to be that person (jk I love being that person), but please do not gatekeep. While TGD is not good representation, there ARE other better examples of autistic characters out there. Written by whom, you may ask? Well, by people who are not autistic. Also, autism comes in many forms. You cannot seriously ask an autistic adult with the mental age of a child to play an autistic character in a show for "accuracy"; it could be seriously harmful for them. Autism is not one-size-fits-all and you should not be treating it like it's some simple issue. I'm not into Korean pop culture, but I did see that one K-Drama on Netflix called "Extraordinary Attorney Woo", and I think the series portrayed autism very well. They also include various forms of autism depending on the person, because as with real life, many different autistic people experience life differently. I've seen other series and movies with autistic characters, though their autism is not a main plot point, so it's only trivial. At the end of the day, acting is acting. Some acting is awful, some acting is good. Great actors study their characters, and that's why we DO get some amazing representation once in a blue moon. However, the next time you advocate against actors doing their jobs without a significant solution in mind, I want you to think about it a little bit. If you're saying non-autistic people cannot play autistic characters or write autistic characters, you're instead saying: 1) That autistic people also cannot play any other role BUT an autistic character, 2) That writers cannot include autistic characters because they may not have autism, which means you get NO representation PERIOD. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of segregation. As an autistic person myself, I don't care who plays what as long as the acting is done well.

i feel like the reason there's not a lot of genuine autistic representation is because bigger companies simply refuse to properly accomodate autistic actors properly. for example, with sia's movie 'music'. she originally hired an autistic actor instead of maddie but sia said it was "unpleasant and stressful" so she casted someone who was allistic instead.

Yes they said it was unpleasent for the actress. Or the person with autism I mean, I have no idea if they were an actor by profession or just someone they thought would fit the role. I would say this was a good thing though. They tried to find more accurate representation. It didn't work out and probably was too hard and stressful for the firts actress. At some point you will run out of money and time so it was probably going to have to be a more flexible actor or nothing at all. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but in this one thing I think they did a positive thing for trying it out.

agree; savant syndrome is obviously pretty cool in the rare cases that it happens but yeah at this point it's way overused on screen. a show that i think does a really good job of accurately portraying an autistic person as just a non-supergenius person is community with abed!! he's still smart and has a lot of pop culture knowledge because of his special interest in tv/film but he doesn't have any sort of "superpower" that feels shoehorned in to "make up for" the fact that he's different. idk for me it was refreshing :)

There are so many presentations of autism but the only one hollywood is interested in portraying is the one they can make into some kind of superhuman ability....

the thing with savant syndrome is that that's the only way autism is ever portrayed - it becomes the stereotype of autism as a whole when autism comes in so so so many different forms and it hurts our community by the lack of representation of other autistic traits. It's obviously great that savant syndrome is represented a lot in media with autistic characters but there needs to be some kind of balance, and right now there is none.
