That’s true. They are well educated, highly experienced, most of them spend over 10 years in airforce. Some of them are not military pilots but their selection process is very selective; again they choose well educated people mostly science graduates and they have a very though physical tests. Military pilots are trained like engineers in Turkey. They learn all sort of science subjects in depth, even material science. These people are not like those British pilots who could be anyone. They are very sensible and they know what they are doing. So risking lives of others; they would not take the chance if there is a risk.

@@chris1978nl who knows, it could be a number of reasons. Most airlines will do everything they can avoid diverting to another airport because it costs them thousands more. I'm a private jet pilot, and apparently the pilot had already been compensating for the tailwind from right to left and at the moment of landing he suddenly encountered a descending wind causing the most aggressive touch on the runway, they probably had to check the shock absorbers and conditions of the tires after landing.

OMG! I could believe what i just saw. Turkish third time unlucky it seems. That has to be the roughest landing i've seen at BHX. The pilot did the right thing by aligning the plane diagonal to the crosswind, but the plane was still rocking and unstable due to the strong crosswinds. The landing must have shook the passengers up somewhat. Despite all the difficulties, the pilot got the plane down eventually. You have to take your hat off to the pilots.

I bet the pilots were having fun ! A good fun excercise after flying so many boring flights !... The reason the touchdown was so hard as one pilot mentioned below is that there was one downwind gust just before it !... The inclined runway was purposely made to ease the impact upon touchdown if it makes any sense explained by another pilot further below ... At any rate pilots did an incedible job by not playing with the rudder but crabbing the plane to the wind direction. Last words I am glad I was not on that plane ... And amazing video documentation. Thank you.

I wonder what the culture is like in that airline about diverting an aircraft. Glad I wasn't onboard. I've only been in that situation once back in the late 80s on an Air Malta flight into Glasgow, although it wasn't strong crosswinds but a pea souper fog in the dark. Pilot announced if we can't land on the third attempt we'll need to divert. Perfect landing but once on the ground may have been difficult to find the gate. 👍👍

A landing that exceeded the cross-wind component for that aircraft for sure, but if you are up and you need to get down what else can you do? He kept it crabbed into wind and didn't risk using rudder because it would have been hard to control the secondary effect of roll and the port wing might have dug in. He got it down level but the tyres paid the price. Great job under the circumstances. Commercial pilots are put under constant pressure to fly in these conditions.

@@koll789 it is very rare that there wouldn't be a suitable alternate or even any other airport they could go to, particularly around Heathrow. London alone has 6 airports. @@koll789 when you plan your flight you always need at least one alternate where the weather is within limits. And if destination weather is out of limits you need at least 2 options that are within limits. Otherwise the flight would be illegal. Pilots of Turkish Military origin must also receive engineering training as side training. The flight training they receive is at an extremely high level. Because the combat readiness rate of the Turkish Air Force is very high. This is because it is the only army actively participating in routine operations in the region. This causes pilots to gain flight hours and experience above the standards. In the past, the compulsory service period was 15 years and Turkish Airlines met all its needs from pilots with military background. However, this period is now 21 years. The doors are almost closed for Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines also established its own "Turkish Airlines Flight Academy (TAFA)" and largely trains its own pilots.

Difficult to tell with the very long shot, but was that more or less a vertical landing (headwind about the same as nominal landing airspeed)? (Do you know if there _was_ any damage done?)

Very long lens ... the landing was around 3km+ from the camera! Without the telephoto, the undulations in the runway don't look so intimidating. With 15/33 runways, Birmingham is set up perpendicular to prevailing westerly / southwesterly winds and therefore not a good place to fly to in strong wind conditions!

I see on the third attempt the pilot had to add a lot of power to deal with almost stalling and trying to be in the zone & get as soft of a landing as possible. Great job & great landing. OK but, remind me never to fly into that airport. BHX and its crazy crosswinds and storms, YIKES!! 😮

as a pilot after 2 attempt, you should divert! safest course of action!

That was a good and safe landing. The touchdown was purposely hard to make sure it lands at right spot to be able to control the aircraft centreline and avoid skidding

Blimey indeed Kev 😀😀. Is this the one that diverted to LHR earlier in the day and repositioned back to BHX ?.

Hi David , it ended up diverting to Gatwick after the first 2 attempts , then returned for THAT landing 🤣

@@AirportAction . Thanks Kev , I seemed to recall it diverted . It seems to me the pilot was determined to get it down “ come what may “. Could have been very nasty , glad it all finished ok .. cheers mate , and thanks again .

On other streams over the past winter when we in the UK get high winds that the NEO's seem to be more prone to gusty situations than the old CEO Airbuses. Guess that bigger engine causes this?

I got to see the poor thing try to leave today on the live stream, but missed the landing (you know, time difference and all that). Anyway, that was so scary! Hand it to the pilots who brought her in safely. Thanks, Kev!

As a pilot, this is not that bad considering the crosswinds of the past few days.
