The reason the touchdown was so hard as one pilot mentioned below is that there was one downwind gust just before it !... The inclined runway was purposely made to ease the impact upon touchdown if it makes any sense explained by another pilot further below ... At any rate pilots did an incedible job by not playing with the rudder but crabbing the plane to the wind direction. Last words I am glad I was not on that plane ... And amazing video documentation. I wonder what the culture is like in that airline about diverting an aircraft. Glad I wasn't onboard. I've only been in that situation once back in the late 80s on an Air Malta flight into Glasgow, although it wasn't strong crosswinds but a pea souper fog in the dark. Pilot announced if we can't land on the third attempt we'll need to divert. Perfect landing but once on the ground may have been difficult to find the gate. 👍👍
@koll7897 ай бұрын
A landing that exceeded the cross-wind component for that aircraft for sure, but if you are up and you need to get down what else can you do? He kept it crabbed into wind and didn't risk using rudder because it would have been hard to control the secondary effect of roll and the port wing might have dug in. He got it down level but the tyres paid the price. Great job under the circumstances. Commercial pilots are put under constant pressure to fly in these conditions.

@@koll789 it is very rare that there wouldn't be a suitable alternate or even any other airport they could go to, particularly around Heathrow. London alone has 6 airports. @pilotguy70747 ай бұрын
@@koll789 when you plan your flight you always need at least one alternate where the weather is within limits. And if destination weather is out of limits you need at least 2 options that are within limits. Otherwise the flight would be illegal. Pilots of Turkish Military origin must also receive engineering training as side training. The flight training they receive is at an extremely high level. Because the combat readiness rate of the Turkish Air Force is very high. This is because it is the only army actively participating in routine operations in the region. This causes pilots to gain flight hours and experience above the standards. In the past, the compulsory service period was 15 years and Turkish Airlines met all its needs from pilots with military background. However, this period is now 21 years. The doors are almost closed for Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines also established its own "Turkish Airlines Flight Academy (TAFA)" and largely trains its own pilots.
