I have the slightly older Honda EU6500 which from what I can tell is pretty much the same machine other than fuel injection. Up here in Ottawa, I have just come off 30 hours of using it for home backup through a Reliance transfer switch because of massive, city wide power outages. It is so quiet it's hard to hear at the end of the driveway and compared to other generators in the area, almost undetectable. I have calculated it costs about a litre of gas an hour to run at about 1500 watts output average, which equates to $2 Canadian an hour at our insane gas prices right now. The tank seems to last about 8 hours before needing refilling...at least according to the terribly inaccurate fuel guage on it. There is very little to criticize with this machine as it does what it is designed to do as well or better than most other generators on the market. The only downside is the price. I paid $3700 used with 93 hours on it, but to replace it now costs $6700 at the local Honda dealership. However, like with all quality items, it has superb resale value and I don't doubt I could get more for it now than I paid for it. So is it really that expensive??? However, in a power failure, it's worth it's weight in gold !! Along with my Honda Goldwing motorcycle, it's one of the best purchases I have ever made. Remember the old saying...."long after the price is forgotten, the quality lives on"

Yeah I just bought one of these but I still like watching the videos. Great video. This is the information that I wanted to know. All anybody wants to do is how loud is the generator. It really doesn’t matter because it’s the quietest one out there in the class. Let’s talk about the features. Great job

I have both the EU2000I and EU7000is. I wasn't aware they could be paralleled, as you stated. Could you possibly explain how, and any limits or constraints on the use cases? Can you also bump up your audio? I had to go to 100% volume. I enjoyed your point of view and comments. I look forward to the next video.

Awesome question! You've taught me a lesson, which is to be careful shooting my mouth off on KZbin. I casually mentioned paralleling dissimilar Honda generators because I'd read some articles of various people doing so. Indeed I went back today and found multiple examples and videos of people paralleling two and sometimes three dissimilar generators. BUT - the part I had previously overlooked was, they always began with verbiage to the effect of, "This voids the warranty". Curious as to why Honda might say this I think the most cogent article I found, funny enough, is from Cummins: power.cummins.com/sites/default/files/literature/technicalpapers/PT-9017-P3-Dissimilar-en.pdf This is a very technical article but the short of it is, proper paralleling of dissimilar generators requires an additional circuit called a 'load sharing control system'. This system tells each generator what speed to operate at as a percentage of their own contribution to the percentage of load on the entire system, which the dissimilar generators cannot know simply by observing bus voltage and frequency. With this information at hand, I personally amend my comments in the video and suggest to our wonderful viewers, unless you want to risk possible damage to your generator, stick with Honda's recommendation of only paralleling same-sized generators. Oh, and yes, we'll work on our audio levels ;o)

About your oil issue, the sealing washer needs to be replaced EVERY time you change the oil. Honda doesn’t sell it but you can go to ANY hardware store and get them. Make sure it’s a copper sealing washer as they can crush fairly easily and seal very well with relatively not much torque.

Sorry for the second suggestion comment, but when you’re recording sound levels on your generator I noticed that the guy doing it had the sound level app set to “Z” weighing. That’s more of a measurement for industrial applications. What we commoners use is “A” weighing, that’s meant to represent sound levels and frequency that the human ear picks up. Just an FYI :). So the sound levels he recorded were not true to what we hear.

Hello I have this same generator and I power my concession trailer by that I mean a 115v 12 amp freezer and 115v Dometic AC unit. I have the 2 phase adapter that plugs into the 50amp connector that comes from the trailer like yours. When I plug it in to the 240v side and flip the voltage selector switch it automatically goes into overload mode. Note I do have the 30amp circuit protector on above the 240v connector while this is happening. Should I have that circuit protector on or off? I haven’t been brave enough to try it off because I didn’t want to ruin anything. Your thoughts?
@AirstreamMTB
@AirstreamMTB 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Jonathan - I'd begin first with process of elimination. It would help to have a good quality multi-meter at the ready and only pursue the "measuring" below steps if you know exactly what you're doing ; ) Start with the generator off and the 30A breaker off, and the voltage selector in the 240v position. With nothing connected to the generator at all start it up and observe that you don't see an overload condition. If you're OK on this step, flip the 30A breaker to the ON position and observe you still don't see any overload. If you get this far at least we know the gennie is good and it's something in the cabling or trailer. Next I would turn off the gennie and once again move the 30A breaker to the off position. Then install the Camco 55422 adapter (taking care to rotate it slightly clockwise to lock it in place). Again start the generator, observe you aren't in an overload condition, and then turn the 30A breaker to the on position. At this point if you don't see an overload, I would (if you know what you're doing) take a measurement with your multi-meter in the "AC" or "~" position and check you're seeing ~110v phase to neutral for both phases (pin out described in the video). At this point you know that your gennie is good and the adapter is good. By now if you still haven't observed an overload I would begin to suspect your cabling or trailer wiring. There are three options that come to my mind: 1. The cable is shorted/open 2. The trailer wiring is shorted/open 3. All appliances in the trailer have been wired to one phase. There are a number of ways to go from here but I would continuity test your 50A cable (the one you're plugging into the Camco 55422) and make sure the ground, two phases and neutral lines continuity check. Also verify you aren't shorted (e.g. no continuity from phase to neutral, phase to phase, phase to ground, etc.). Of course you'd do this with the cable not attached to the generator and not energized. If your power cable continuity tests OK we can safely assume at this point it's something in the trailer wiring. If you get this far you're definitely into trailer territory. I would verify that the phases in the trailer have been properly balanced. If you are seeing an immediate overload condition when you energize your trailer, especially when nothing in the trailer is yet turned on, this almost certainly means there is a short in the trailer. If, on the other hand, you can energize the trailer, and maybe get one appliance going, but then you get an overload when all the appliances are going, you're likely wired to all one phase.

The eu7000is should produce enough power but if your air conditioners are pulling enough inrush current you might blow the overload circuit. If that's happening consider the soft start kit for each A/C unit: www.microair.net/products/easystart-364-3-ton-single-phase-soft-starter-for-air-conditioners?variant=30176048267

Honda runs 100% of their finished product before it leaves the factory. Lawnmower, generator, string trimmer, outboard motor, motorcycle or automobile. If it is a finished product it is test fired and all systems checked. Oil and fuel is removed then packaged up for shipment. If you are anywhere close to a Honda Factory of any kind go in and see if you can take a tour and you can see for yourself.

Yes, we have blown a circuit running both A/Cs and the electric water heater, so we leave that on propane. I also carry a 4 gal compressor and the gennie won't run run both A/Cs and that either.

43 amps is all thats available thru the 240 volt 4 wire plug. The rest has to be used thru the standard 120v plugs. you don't need 240 volts in an rv which makes this generator and expensive non necessity. You can parallel 2 champion 3400 watt units with the 50 amp parallel kit and have more usable power in the rv for 1/2 the price with remote start.

@AirstreamMTB
@AirstreamMTB 2 жыл бұрын
No worries ;o) RMS Watts = Volts * Amps Therefore: Amps = RMS Watts / Volts Typical output voltage from the generator is ~125 volts so: Amps = 5000/125 = ~ 40 Amps (sustained)

wrong , in north america there is 120v per phase but if u put ur load across two phase then u will get 240v for higher load items like ac , drier and heaters... in commercial hvac they use 3 phase supply . it is called a split phase system and each phase is 120 degree out of sync than another and so on 120v per phase u get 220v combined not 240 if the system is for 3 phase . if the system is for 2 phase then they are 180 degree out of sync and u get 240v out of two 120v supply

The generator puts out 240 volts single phase. There is not 2 phases.
@tommytmt
@tommytmt 6 жыл бұрын
Steve Hill - Technically you’re correct but at the same time not. 240 volt circuits in North America are actually two 120 volt conductors 180 degrees out of phase with each other… enter the “two phases” comment that op made. So op isn’t wrong either, technically North American 240 volt circuits are technically 2 phase circuits.
@stevehill1802
@stevehill1802 6 жыл бұрын
Tommy TMT - In North America we either have Single Phase, or Three Phase electricity. What you are referring to is not 2 phase, but is called split phase or single-phase three-wire. It is simply a single phase transformer with a 240 volt secondary that is center tapped. Wikipedia explains it well. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split-phase_electric_power
@tommytmt
@tommytmt 6 жыл бұрын
Steve Hill - No dude I get it, I know how it’s made, but what I’m saying is that the two 120 volt conductors that make up the 240 volt circuits are each 180° out of phase with each other… in actuality one half of your electrical panel at home is a different phase than the other. BUT, yes you ARE correct, it is technically just single phase power coming both out of that generator and into our houses. And I also know that in reality a 2-phase system is real but it’s never used, the power it supplies is too asymmetric to be of any real use.
@stevehill1802
@stevehill1802 6 жыл бұрын
Tommy TMT - In a multi phase system you have to have 2 or more sine waves occurring at different times. In your house you have a single sine wave or one phase repeating 60 time a second if you are in the US
@TheMickeymental

You state you chain your Honda to a tree. I do not know the way in which you chain the generator. Portable grinders will make easy work of any chain, and thieves are very creative in masking noise. It is heavy, but it is on wheels. May I suggest if you are leaving for any length of time you formulate another plan. Removing the wheels and the lift handle could be a deterrent if only that it would then take two thieves to lift the generator and extra time. Thieves will cut through the tubular steel if that is where you use the chain.
