Thank you thank you! Totally agree. There are few headphones out there that can reveal such micro detail like the K702. It's simply astounding what they can pick up. I've found that the DEVA provides a bit better instrument timbre than even a K702, but it's super close. I'm frequently floored when I listen with the 702 - it's quite an addicting headphone! The attack, sustain, and decay of instruments and vocals is especially noteworthy and what sets it apart from the majority of other dynamic headphones. In that sense, it's eerily close to being as good as a planar.

Thanks for the love! Yeah man, the 6XX is my #1 overall headphone in this hobby. Absolutely perfect sound signature. There's literally nothing bad you can say about it. So cool you're into the Floyd! What are your favorite albums? Love the 702 for gaming as well. My boy Solid Lad doesn't really like them for FPS, but I talked to another guy who prefers them for multiplayer but not single player. Go figure lol. I've been playing a lot of Outer Worlds with them lately paired with a K5 Pro but also just got a Creative G6!! Going to do a shootout with the K5 Pro, G6, Audioengine D1, and perhaps the Mojo here soon as they all have optical in. Should be really fun! You're totally spot on about the 712. I feel like the 702 also hits a sweet spot for me. Not for every genre of music, but man does it ever excel with certain songs and albums. What Floyd album would you recommend with the 700 series, or one that sounded fabulous with the 712?

Great Video man! I agree with everything you said except for the neutrality on the mids between the two headphones. I have the HD600 and the K712. (While the 712 and 702 do have slightly different FR they are very similar) I wouldn't say that the open K7xx series have more ''neutral'' mids than the 600. I mean the FR between 800 and 3kh is of course elevated in the 600 but elevated in a linear manner (+1, +3db more or less) without peaks whereas the K7xx series while not so elevated across that range have the 1,5 through 2,5 khz peak. Of course you cant clearly hear these differences but in some specific songs with prominent mids on that region, but from my experience the Senns are more accurate due to the linearity (just nitpicking on your opinions :P) . But as i' ve learned in this shit hobby accurate doesn't necessarily mean more enjoyable.For example the Aeon Flow closed has more accurate mids than both of them and i often prefer the AKG or the Senn a lot of times because i finally understood that i am a midhead after all :P All the other things you said about soundstage and genre pairing are spot on. Pads on the 712 are different than the other K7xx though as they are gel pads and not foam. Best pads i've ever tried in any headphone by far in my opinion. Expensive as fuuuck though: 48 euros A PIECE = 96 a pair (yeaah) it is a higher quality pad though and more resistant than the regular foam the majority of headphones have. PS: After Tyll and metal571's hiatus, its your opinions i appreciate the most out of every other youtube reviewer.Last summer when I was thinking of buying the Aeon Flow Closed, i was hesitant after reading countless opinions on reddit, sbaf, the constant bashing of some of its charecteristics by some reviewers on youtube(even metal571) and finally said screw it, i'm going to buy it. I liked the look and decided to trust Tyll and you on the sound. Incredible and really accurate sound for a closed back. Long story short (lol, not really ) what have i learned after spending money on this hobby? Some headphones are more accurate/neutral than others for sure but that doesn't necessarily mean they will be more enjoyable for you. Everyone has their own preferred sound signature. I finally understood that i like midbass that makes bass guitars punchy instead of strong sub bass coupled with prominent mids. Every headphone has pros and cons and depending on the genre and mood i often pick one over the other. I even pick my old Sony XB500 bass cannons for electronic/disco/hip hop and prefer it over the others on these songs.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! First off thanks for disagreeing with me but not being douchey about it!! And thanks for the kind words!! There are some people that could really take a lesson from you actually. It's weird, Tyll's graph www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK702.pdf of the K702 shows a small bump in the 2kHz area, but it doesn't look like a 5dB rise like RTINGS' graph shows - www.rtings.com/headphones/1-4/graph#332/3992 It just looks like a small hump (maybe 1 or 2dB) which is how I actually hear that extra presence. To me it's just right. It definitely doesn't stand out unnecessarily imo. For whatever reason I didn't find them to be overpowering or "shouty." I find that they sit very well in the mix and don't stand out like the 600's mids do. You're also very right in the fact (if I'm reading correctly) that if an unnecessary bump is there, it's harder to discern (for me anyways). I feel like the mids overall are very well done on the 702. For instance, I can clearly hear a flaw in a Grado headphone at 2k, whereas on the 702 I don't. Graphs do show a bump on both, but for whatever reason I hate how it makes the Grado's sound. Now I'm wondering why. www.rtings.com/headphones/1-3-1/graph#307/3161 well it is a good 4 or 5dB more lol. Yikes. Interesting. I think the 702's hit that sweet spot by contrast. I'd really like to get my hands on those pads though!! It's also interesting to me that someone just recently commented on my Aeon video about how much they hated them! Lol it's so crazy to me how people could have completely different impressions of headphones sometimes. I find that a lot of time there are general consensuses on certain cans, but I think the Aeon is a love or hate type of sound for sure. The guy who let me borrow those didn't like them because he felt like they had a weird "radio broadcast-y" type of sound that for him was overly warm and artificial sounding. For me paired with the Mojo was my sweet spot. Absolutely one of the best experiences I've ever had.

...So what you're telling me is I have to get both - Gotcha! Man, what a thrilling ride back and forth, I probably made a new certain decision at every chapter of the review! I came into this biased toward the AKG off looks alone because the Senn's look droopy and dumpy while the AKG's look retro and technical. Then you had me all over the place because I crave a good sound stage and percussion precision, being a drummer myself. I also game a lot and I love plenty of jazz. However, you praise the 600's for what probably comprises 90% of my music collection. This will never get any easier!
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Lol "Droopy and dumpy" I laughed out loud. I freakin' love the K702 man. Love both, but yeah! This is one of the few cases where I would say absolutely purchase both. Why? BECAUSE I SAID SO! Just kidding. It's because they compliment each-other really really well. On one hand you have the HD600, a bit darker in the treble and great for most genres of music. Slams a bit harder, etc. but has a more narrow image and not much Soundstage. And then you have the K702, better for Jazz, Classical, Gaming, and Film. Much better spacing, depth, and width to the image, but does sometimes lack that center image. I love having both here at the pad because I can go back and forth and it's just nice to have those different flavors of sound depending on my mood. Did you see my article? Def consider purchasing both from there! homestudiobasics.com/akg-k702-vs-sennheiser-hd600/ Let me know if you have any more questions. Hey man, thank you! Did you see my reply there? I will put it here as well: You may try the Sennheiser HD6XX actually. I love and still have an HD600, but I believe the 6XX is a better value. THe K702 has better Soundstage and does work for the genres you mention, but you’ll be lacking some slam and impact. Still, out of 8 or 9 headphones I have here I find myself using the K702 the majority of the time. With acoustic it’s going to be amazing. If you’re okay with less slam in those other genres but an incredibly crisp and revealing sound, I may go with the 702. As you may or may not know, the mid-range is probably the most important thing to get right in a mix and so that's why the 600's have always been the go to for mixing but I find that headphones with better Soundstage can sometimes be more revealing. It's super tough to recommend one over the other in this case. Did you you think about it some more?

Mids on the 702 are just weird. HD 600 mids peak where they should at ear resonance - 702's don't and are shifted more towards 2k, making them more of a flavor can than a reference headphone imo. So my super old blank stare comment was more about the shape of the FR itself was just what it should be, no weird off-color stuff happening like the AKG has. I still think both cans have too much upper mid and of course by modern target standards the bass on both is pretty shy, with the 600 having more of a midbass emphasis. I will say though that classical and well recorded jazz sounds very special on the AKGs and the midrange shout at a strange spot does some very interesting and enjoyable things. That, and the massively giant stage width of the 702 that is totally lacking on the 600

I have the k712s, and I've always felt kinda the same about the mids... they're all over the place. Listening to k712s, for me... feels like a distant handshake, compared to the close cuddle I get with the 600s. Also, people tend to rave about the soundstage and imaging on the k712s. I don't like it. While it might sound big and movie-like, I have a much easier time telling where enemies are coming from ingame with both the 600s and TIN T2s. Do the 650s/6XXs keep what makes the 600s what they are, but tame the mid-shout? Because if that's the case, I might get them, after selling my k712s. (If anyone is interested in the k712s, hit me up btw.)

I felt like both the aforementioned two headphones controlled the bass better... the 58Xs sometimes felt kinda boomy and bloated in comparison.

@@TheSolidlad Yeah the 6XX is my new #1 overall in the hobby. Basically a perfect sound signature. There's literally nothing about it that you won't like. Someone on Instagram did mention to me how he didn't like it because it made music sound slightly artificial. I can maaaaybe see that. Maybe. But it's such a small nitpick. The 6XX's do have a lot of air to them. To me they were NOT a clone of the 650 like everyone says. I found them to be a bit crisper but not overly snappy like the 600's. It was a perfect balanced between the 2 actually.

How dare you challenge my opinions. LOL. Nah I responded in depth above to another guy as well about the mids, which I figured would be a point of contention with a few people. Thankfully both you and him framed your rebuttals nicely. Check out my response to him but: Let me go and collect my thoughts on the throne. Ok I'm back. Man that was refreshing. So basically I just don't hear too much forwardness on the K702 for whatever reason. To me it sounds just about right. I think Tyll's graph better represents how I hear it, as well as the overall sound. Is that really a 5dB rise? Doesn't seem like it. Sounds more like 1 or 2. Now the Grado's sound flat out awful at 2k and we all know that but the 702 doesn't sound to me how RTINGS graph portrays it in that same area. If that truly is a 5dB peak, it sounds completely fine to me. Idk. Agreed on Jazz. Really makes you sit back and smile at times. I get so frustrated with the majority of headphones' inability to portray the genre with any semblance of accuracy or effectiveness. The 702 does it very well. Also: where you been bro? Hey man! I've been listening and researching this stuff for many years now. The Amp/DAC has wayy less bearing on how your music is going to sound than people would have you believe. The dac problem is really getting out of control in my opinion. Your source is hands down the first thing to consider followed by the headphones, followed by the output impedance of the amp/dac. The way a song was actually recorded is of paramount importance. That's just basic sound engineering. Anything after that is mostly fluff. Sure, a dac can add a different flavor (mostly warm vs. cool), but even that is incredibly subtle when you consider that I have the added benefit of demoing a bunch of them side by side. Without those many buffers, I wouldn't even know or care that amp A sounds ever so slightly grainier than amp B. I've also demoed many high end amps with the 600 series and countless other headphones. It's all vastly overrated and mostly snake oil. This whole "search for the unicorn" has only resulted in people being dissatisfied with what they have and constantly chasing better sound but for what? An extra .05% increase in pleasure? I don't get it and I didn't mean to rant here but I am going to be making another video on this very topic. You can check out my Law of Diminishing Returns video if you are inclined: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKC1c6abp72Br80 Also, no, you don't need a high priced (or even mid priced) amp for the 600 series or 700 series from AKG. That's just not true. No offense or anything. I just don't want people to read your comment and assume that it's necessary to go out and spend a bunch of money needlessly. A $100 ATOM and the 6XX is around 95-98% of what anyone would ever need. That said, I appreciate you stopping by and chiming in.

Great comparison video! Thanks! I would love to try a 702, what do you think causes it to have such a wide soundstage? Is it the way the drivers are angled, Or is it because the pads are thick and your ears are further away from the drivers, or is there another factor?

Thank you for the love man! That's a great question actually. I'd have to do a little digging. In my 4 years of research leading up to the purchase of the 702, I've never actually come across anyone (that I can remember) commenting on that so it's really interesting and cool that you brought it out. I do think the distance of the drivers from your ears probably has something to do with it, but I don't think they're angled like on a HiFiMan. I know that if you sit the HiFiMan's down and back, the sound gets much better. It's hard to keep them in that specific place for any length of time, but it definitely does make a difference. Out of curiosity, I tried that same thing with the 702 and it doesn't really do anything lol. Just kind of sounds worse. For me the 702 sounds best when it's centered perfectly around your ears.

Hey Stu. I enjoyed your review. Oh no! Didn’t mean to rhyme all the time. Sorry bro. // I got that out of my system! Your review really was informative and not without entertainment. I enjoyed the cartoon scene and the flash overs to other actors too. Just a couple of critical comments, given with respect. It’s just my opinion and I have been wrong before 😂. 1. The freakin’ geek with the hood; he maybe not understood, ridin’ a bike I didn’t like; but he should go for good. Is that understood? 2. The guy at the finish arsin’ about, we know it’s the end; be a friend and give him a clout. Sorry if you don’t agree. It’s only me. I try to be meek; talk with tongue in cheek! I promise that any rhyme from now will be accidental; otherwise I’m going mental! From your descriptions of the headphones I think I would like the sound stage of the AKG 702. The level frequency I think I would like for classical and baroque music. It’s a pity that it’s a little lacking in the mid to lower bass though. I wonder could that be compensated for by a good frequency equaliser such as the one on the FiiO BTR5 App. That has plus or minus 12dB adjustments at 31.5, 63, 125, 250, 500 Hz and so on up to 16kHz. I guess it depends on whether the headphone drivers can respond linearly to the more aggressive base signal applied to bring up the bass volume. It would be a good thing to try Stu, if you can get hold of a BTR5 easily. To get me going I recently bought a BTR5 and a set of Audio Technica ATH-MSR7b headphones. They are a closed back design, but the frequency response is good from low base up to my limit of hearing. The range according to the specifications is 5 Hz up to 50 kHz, but no dB tolerances are quoted. They have a low impedance at 36 Ohms and sensitivity of 101 dB/mW. So they are easy to drive and don’t trouble the BTR5. One compromise I am making is using the single ended output of the amplifier, rather than the balanced output available on the BTR5. I have a balanced cable which came with the headphones, but the balanced input on the cable is 4.4 mm compared with the balanced input to the BTR5 which is 2.5 mm! So I’m short of a 4.4 mm female to 2.5 mm male balanced adapter. FiiO make one (LB-4.4M) but it’s out of stock at local stores. If they can’t get it locally soon I can get it from Amazon US. So far I am happy with the sound from the amplifier and headphones, especially the base on some of my J.S. Bach organ music. Being closed back the sound stage is narrow, but the mids and highs are very nice too. It’s good to have the equaliser to increase the highs above 8-16 kHz to make up for my hearing fall off at those frequencies. I would like to get a good pair of open ended earphones, hence my interest in the AKG 702. I have in mind the Beyerdynamic 1990 if I can afford them, but also others such as the Drop Sennheiser 6XX, AKG 712, Sennheiser HD599, Hifiman Sundara, and the list goes on. So your reviews are very welcome, as well as entertaining. Thanks for all the effort you’re putting in Stu! Take care and God bless you. 😀

@Home Studio Basics: No worries Stu! Keep being on you! I told you that I was talking “tongue in cheek”. You don’t have to listen to me or anyone else - well it doesn’t hurt to listen, but what you do about it is your choice. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I say things as I see them. So we both know that we speak truthfully and plainly. That’s how it should be. I’m glad that many people enjoy your humour. Don’t get me wrong; I like it too! By the way “give him a clout” means give him a knock or a hit. I think it comes from the “clouts” which shoe repairers of old used to knock into leather heals on one side to cut down on leather wear. Not many leather shoes these days; and what we get are disposable, not repairable. Pity about the Planet Earth! Oh well some think that’s disposable too; but they won’t find another one that they can emigrate to! Anyway, back on subject, I am seriously considering both your recommendations. I will definitely check out your article. The 702’s seem to have a good soundstage. I wonder how the HD6XX’s compare? Probably in time maybe both would be worth getting. It’s all a matter of what is affordable at the time. I would like to get a good desktop amplifier in time. The appearance of the THX amplifiers makes me wonder about the need to pay for balanced output amplifiers and the expensive cables, as the THX amplifiers reduce noise to such insignificant levels that balanced or not balanced would be just the same. However the technology needs to be evaluated more by users - I read in one review that all THX amplifiers are not the same, and that there can be compression errors introduced. I don’t know much more than that, but it may pay to wait and see. Thanks for your reply. Keep up your great work and, of course, God bless.

Does the FiiO Q1 MKII can handle the k702 headphones?
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Unfortunately I don't have that Amp/DAC here at the moment or I would try it. If we go by specs, I would say no. The K702 isn't hard to drive, but it does have a low sensitivity and needs quite a bit of power from the amp to get going. The problem with the Q1 is that it doesn't have much power to give. For a quick example to show you what I mean, I just plugged my 702 into the K3 and I'm completely maxed out on low gain. It sounds fine and pleasant, but not quite loud enough. Gain is def needed. With gain, I'm pretty much satisfied. The point is that the K3 provides 120mW into 32 Ohm unbalanced. The Q1 by contrast only gives you 75mW which is pretty weak. So yeah I wouldn't purchase it for the 702. Are you looking for something portable?

@@HomeStudioBasics I am looking for a pair of over-ear headphones which has the same sound quality of these. I bought this dac/amp because I found it with a super price, not because of it's portability... and the same store who sold me the dac amp very cheap sells me the k702 cheap too... Should I go for the AKG K240 MKII instead? Thank you so much for your answering. I came here for the information you give, but I stayed for the silly jokes. You're awesome man!

Absolutely! This is why I will be likely keeping only K702/HD600, and getting rid of the rest. This is my second purge LOL. 9500/600 survived the first. While I do love the 9500, I think it's time for someone else to have a go. I think giving away something you truly value is better than something you may use more rarely. I'm having a hard time getting rid of 600 because 1) it's an original made in Ireland, and 2) I want to use balanced cables with it. Plus it's great ot have afround for reference purposes.

Great gaming headphone for me due to pretty much the same things talked about in the video with regard to Film and stuff like that. Great imaging, fantastic out of your head feeling, lots of space and depth to the image.. and you'll start to be able to hear stuff going on all around you: right, left, up, down, so turn that frown upside down!!! There's just a great sense of spatial awareness and directional cues are very good! Were you considering anything else? I think you'll really love this one. Let me know!

I want you to try the Fidelio X2s. Unfortunately my pair is one of my daily drivers, so I can't part with them. And not cause theyre outstanding, but because they're solid in almost every category. And they're super wide, but also very lively. To me, pop music and hip hop sound great on them. They dont quite have the bass of a planar, but it's more natural to me. Planars have the best bass, but it's kind of unnatural, and yet natural. Like the bass itself usually sounds incredible, but the planars ive tried are more sterile than the X2, so it doesnt quite fit. It's kinda like really good fake tits. The X2 is a naturally warm, wide dynamic. So it's more like big natural titties. Which, like natural tits, are kinda sloppy (their detail maybe is a little recessed). But I still think it's a great headphone for listening to music. For analyzing music not so much. Also a lot of people hate them, so maybe it's a preference thing.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 4 жыл бұрын
LMAO "It's kind of like really good fake tits." HAHAHA. Love them big natty's for sure. I actually prefer some sloppy on a woman. I mean, who wants a perfect figure? That's rarely realistic, and even then I find it kind of unattractive. Some of it *is* good genetics, but the more sterile and perfect a girl looks the more it generally means she is overcompensating for some other negative character quality that she's trying to hide. The physical flaws and personality quirks are what make women beautiful. It's just that they have to be flaws that YOU are in love with, and that's certainly not easy to come by. That said, I'm really trying to get a pair of X2's for comparison to the SHP's! I tried to reach out to Philips but I cannot find an email for their marketing dept. I sent out one and got a response but those people couldn't even direct me to the right ppl. I will continue trying. I may just purchase a set for myself though.
@MrAhuraMazda
@MrAhuraMazda 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomeStudioBasics the SHPs are like a hot chick, in shape with a nice ass and small perky tits. She's hot for her social circle or school, but in reality isn't near a model. Despite the fact that everyone tells her she should model, she's 5'7 and should not. But nevertheless, a prized hookup or girlfriend. That's the 9500. The X2 is the thick girl with big tits who gives great head but maybe is a little bigger than thick. She's not a Kardashian, but kinda has that look. Shes also a lot of fun, but different from the 9500. Both the 9500 or the X2 may let you do anal. They're up for anything and a good time. The 600 series, Sundara, 1990, 6xx or 4xx are the long term gf/marriage. Just a little better than the X2 or 9500. Little hotter, little more long term chemistry, not as crazy. Though you'll probably wish you could have one more night with the 9500 even if you're locked down with the logically better 600. The actual model or Kardashian would be like a Focal, Audeze or ZMF. Those are attainable but require significant financial outlay and probably more soulless (analytical, revealing or accurate).
