It was after one of the night concerts, he was teaching a young man some tune and I was there. He told us some stories, then I asked him if he could play “One Mint Julep” for us. He grabbed my guitar and played the song. And then, Richard Smith came and they started jamming.

Watching this is fascinating…they are not performing a show. They are playing with and for each other. Richard is working out a harmony part with Tommy’s assistance. As an amateur guitar player, watching this is amazing. I actually made me a little emotional.😍

Smith was born in Beckenham, England. He picked up the guitar when he was five years old after watching his father playing an Atkins and Travis version of "Down South Blues". He begged his father, a longtime Atkins admirer, to introduce him to the fingerpicking style. Smith soon became a child prodigy on the guitar. At the age of 11 he shared the stage with his idol when Atkins invited Smith to play with him at Her Majesty's Theatre in London.

Daugherty r 22 When Tommy was playing Mr Smiths guitar I noticed what appeared to be a unique nut on that guitar. Perhaps it was some sort of capo , but I really couldn't tell. Can you shed any light on that ? Thanks and thanks for that quick bio.

Kenny Bluet pretty sure it’s a capo he rests behind the nut when he’s not using it.

@@thearabianmage thanks. I thought of that but thought it might have been there for a specific purpose other than to just sit there waiting to be used. I was thinking could it possibly be some sort of custom made capo that was secured just below the nut , in order to utilize the whole fretboard. You know , as opposed to putting it on the second or third etc.

Akira, you were destined to be there with your camera that evening. Just imagine that these seven video clips had not been filmed. I dread too. These gifted men are in their element, playing informally in each other's company and you informally captured the moment to perfection. To say that I am grateful would be an understatement. Thank you for a treasure.

It's remarkable the encyclopedia of songs that run through these guys minds... It just never seems to end and, regardless of the number of players that jump in to join them, they all know what part they will play instantly.

In this video you will watch and listen to arguably the two finest multi genre acoustic guitar masters teaching each other. What a treat. Tommy Emmanuel is not the finest acoustic guitar instrumentalist in every genre. He is, however, one of the finest handful of contenders for that title in every genre. And he and maybe Richard are the only ones who can say that. With Tommy It’s oddly annoying (to me) because he also seems to know that, but the confidence with which he plays which is by a country mile surer than all the others does not come from an awareness of what others think, but, rather, the knowledge he has that no one has outworked him, and he knows damned well that he’s good. He gets serious satisfaction out of how well he can play what he just a split second before thought of, and his fingers just do it-and he never, to my ear-makes mistakes, flubs a fingering, as he assembles it and as he plays it. At my lower by a mile but playing for 60 years, similar music (John Hurt) ) I used to feel that relative power sometimes. I knew exactly whether I had acquitted myself in such a way that no one could argue with it. So Tommy, he knows! So does everyone else. It is said that Sammy Davis Jr could play every instrument in a band. I saw him play drums, piano and trumpet. He could sing Broadway, pop, country. He could tap dance as well as any other show Biz tapper I ever saw. Tommy Emmanuel is that guy when it comes to what you can get out of one guitar for longer than you can stand to listen to because you’re getting exhausted just thinking about what he just did. He’s not real. One man cannot do all that. There are others within genres. Stanley Jordan is one. Wes Montgomery. Ry Cooder. But they are genre phenoms. Tommy takes the acoustic guitar everywhere (genre), I think. Esp when Phil was alive. Maybe Glen Campbell was a TE. Anyway, Tommy will almost play every song every way it could reasonably be played! Every song is a masterclass. Some will only relate to the tab-ness of it (finger/fret pairs); while others came to the party with that and are appreciating the barrage of phrases and idioms. I cannot watch too much because is more energy and information that would be useful to me than I can absorb. He’s also very affable, generous with his time, regardless of what fan he is paying attention to (and he does pay attention). He will sit down and listen to you play, or even play with you, at your level, and give you advice that is appropriate for your skill level. Who does that? As my grandmother used to say, hysterically. I’ve met both. Richard is a talent powerhouse, also. I’m not too much older than Tommy. I’ve shaken his hand. I have seen him leap up and off a stage. Not carelessly like a child, but unusually masterfully. He is a very strong man. And the way he plays... the energy, the pace of passages and ideas while he either pays attention to his audience or, like his audience, takes pleasure in watching himself play, even laughing out loud when he amuses himself! He is unique.
