Agreed!!! Saw him at age 19 right after he joined the band with a buzz cut at Playhouse in the Park in Philadelphia in 1974. They did all of Where Have I Known You Before and Celebration Suite for the encore before either album came out. Back in the day when RTF toured with the music before they went into the studio. Insane.

Jose Sousa, it looks relatively good for his age but you probably wouldn’t say that if you saw him in 1975 playing with Chick @ Carnegie Hall. He looked like the baby in the band.

Al is one of the guys who moved forward modern guitar massively. Many many guitar players have such a lot to thank this guy for. Many well known so called “genius” guitar players have blatantly ripped him off. Why his contribution isn’t more recognised is surprising to me. If there ever is a Mount Rushmore for guitar players this guy should be on it for sure.
@anton58191302 жыл бұрын
Probably doesn't age because he's practicing 15 hours a day, no booze cigarettes or alcohol. Guitar is definitely his singular passion. Much respect and love to him and John McLaughlin for letting us tag along on their respective life journies.

The studio version of this is truly magical. It's amazing to get to see his fingering so close up. It would have taken 1000 years to figure this out listening to the recording.

it's an odd phrasing, almost impossible to play. It's like Jeff Beck on steroids...

I saw him in Wichita one time, and he was saying, "As Falls Wichita, So Falls..." And then he said, "Oh, that's that other guy." And I yelled, "What other guy?" He replied, "That's what I say. What other guy?" I remember reading reviews of Tiramisu where he was compared to Pat Metheny. I know it had to really burn him to be compared like that when he is totally different.

I have been fortunate to see Mr. DiMeola play live 3 times. Even though I have see a lot of the greats in rock, classic and jazz, Al's are generally the best show's. His music transcends all genre's. In my mind he is the guitarist's guitarist, he can stand on the stage with any other guitarist and show them a thing or two. I read one time years ago, that to be able to play as fast as Mr. DiMeola bass wise, they must be able to play with a pick or they didn't play in his band. That seems logical, there were probably only 2 bass players that I have seen that might have been able to keep up with his speed without a pick and that would be the great Jaco and Pete Entwhistle. I have been a fan since Elegant Gypsy first came out. I believe in 1977. Please correct me if I am wrong on that date. Still just as wonderful today as then. That is the definition of timeless. Thanks for the wonderful music!

@barbarakud97787 жыл бұрын
Al Di Meola is a guitar genius ! The next guitarist which could be called genius also in fusion/classic jazz is IMHO John McLaughlin ! I would be interested in opinion of the mentioned 2 guitarists about Halswarth (RIP) music, which was too difficult for me to understand - I treated this as experiments with very different "exotic" modes/scales.

I got kicked out of an Al concert at the Great American Music Hall right before he was going to do his big finish after an acoustic set. The Les Paul was getting ready to come out for Race with the Devil on the Spanish highway and my friend had words with a bouncers friend and bam out the door brawling with bouncers. My friend had to pick up a 4x4 stop sign to clear the bouncers from another friend. So nice 100 mile drive home with the rented car. We were at the bar when this guy bumps my friend sitting at the bar "watch out" he says lol. Then the fun starts. A night of true buyers remorse. That poor bouncers face, that poor bouncers face.😢🙈🙊😈

@musicalstudies95075 жыл бұрын
What I mean is the phrasing of this tune is absolutely insane and fairly complex. One wrong note, or one extra note will destroy the rest of the tune unless you're good enough to know the spot you should comeback in after messing up.
