It looks like you were having a good time turning these, Billy. I've seen those sea urchins and will admit, it's very tempting to turn some ornaments using them. They are really cool, as are your turnings and completed ornaments. Great job, buddy! 😀 Phil

Thank you very much, Phil. They are fun to turn. And it's something that not only gives you a break from bowls, etc., you get to practice your spindle skills.

Those are really nice, Billy. We brought home a bunch of urchins from Florida several years ago. If I wanted to make some of those all I would need is a lathe, some tooling, and a whole bunch of turning lessons lol.

Thank you very much, Bill! Is that all? Lol

They look fantastic Billy. I just looked up sea urchins on google, never knew they have five fold symmetry. Now I'm wondering about turning a wooden one.

Very nice Billy. What did you fill them with? I have never worked with them.

Thank you, Gary! I used expanding window foam.

Cool Billy! I have seen them dropped and broken. This should make them much stronger.

I don't get it...was that purple thing you were turning, a sea urchin made into a long, skinny blank (4:01)? I noticed when turners make finials...they are way out of proportion and larger than the covered bowl they are on. Is there a reason for that?
@TheMessyStudio2 ай бұрын
I think you missed something. No, I didn't make a sea urchin into a purple blank. It was wood. Most turners use the golden ratio (Fibonacci) when turning. And such is the case with my finials. They are 1.618 times longer than the urchin shell is tall.

@@TheMessyStudio in my opinion, they should be going by proportion...it looks better. Like a foot isn’t less than a 1/3 of the bowl.
