I'm glad they added this. I could handle every jumpscare just fine up until Cynthia Weaver, that b*tch was just too much for me.

Jumpscares in horror games like Outlast, Soma, Deadspace, Visage, Amnesia, etc, never really scare me and i always know when they will occur. But in Alan Wake 2, the flash jumpscare always gets me and freaks me out lol

Does SOMA have jumpscares, though? I can't remember any.

Honestly the reduced audio isn't a bad option. Sometimes when playing it with headphones loudly it can be annoying because the loud noise by itself jump scares you because it's so loud. I may try it out with reduced audio

Thanks for the comparison video! I was curious what I'd been, uh, "missing," and it reaffirmed my choice to wait a bit to play until this option was in. It works like a charm; I still get the "point" of the jump scares without feeling gross afterward.

I do adore Alan Wake II - it is, in most respects, one of the finest examples of interactive media in recent years. But I cannot say that these "jump-scares" are a good addition. I do not appreciate being startled, and that's all they do - they are timed to occur at periods where the player is concentrating heavily on the screen or when they are not expecting a loud noise to suddenly erupt in their earphones or headphones. They require no effort, they add nothing, and all they do is make me recoil and spill my drink all over my desk! Horror does not require these "jump-scares". Silent Hill 2 does not have them. SOMA does not have them (for the most part). Signalis doesn't have them. I can appreciate Horror. I can't appreciate being startled. I do not enjoy the sensation of my heart leaping out of my chest. I don't know who does, frankly. So I am grateful they have added these settings. Hopefully, if they do make the wrong decision to include such jump-scares in future releases, they will temper that wrong by giving us the ability to reduce it.

I think jumpscares are cheap, and this option is silly. But I think the game does well by keeping it limited to "astral" projections or whatever it is where we get to see the forces driving the scene in a pop. It's quite stylistic how they turned something cheap into something more of a scene element that drives the action.
@shaishavpathak8 ай бұрын
The option isn’t silly. Probably helps for people with epilepsy, sensitive vision, or sensitive hearing.
@Reddervetter8 ай бұрын
@shaishavpathak oh I guess that's facts. I still think typically if you're intentionally creating jumpscares you're just kinda a dick anyway, but that's a positive way to see the option.

@GrimFables I beat it, I don't see exactly what you mean, but idk if you read my comment through because I do go on to explain why I appreciate remedy's use of jumpscares as almost stylistic exposition. I still think jumpscares are quite dumb in general
