For those that need to hear this.... Alanis wrote all her own lyrics and collaborated on all the music. No one wrote her stuff, even on her first two albums at the tender age of 16-19!!! The industry didn't push her into anything!! She wrote and performed what SHE wanted to do. She wrote for fun! (and it shows). She had almost complete creative control over her work, which included her videos!! Her first two albums (Alanis! and Now is the Time) were foundational to JAgged Littel Pill. In fact, if you listen to the two albums and compare them to Jagged Little Pill, you can HEAR many of the hits from that iconic album in the "b-tracks" of those first two. It's a little eerie and cool! Some of us figured out pretty quickly that she was going to be a powerhouse with that voice! She is one of the very few artists at a very young age, and start in her career, who was actually able to break away from the slave industry of music. She made her own way without being used by the record industry. They treat people like slaves. Prince talked about it all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard him, and multiple other artists, talking about how the record industry controls people through the contracts. You do not own your own music. They own the masters. Alanis broke away from that early on, and made her own way with the music. She enjoyed writing and singing her own stuff. There wasn’t going to be anyone control her career or her music. That’s what I admire about her. This video here is the mold they had created for her. She broke it and destroyed it, and I love it.

Alot of people enquire as to why Alanis doesn't re-release the first two albums, here is perhaps why. She had very little ownership from a contractual perspective, the result is that any re-release could financially benefit individuals that she doesn't like to associate with. Worth a thought?

I had always heard about how she was a mainstream pop artist in Canada but once you actually see it - WOW, thats all I can think to say.
@petegtorcan5 жыл бұрын
During the Jagged Little Pill days when she was doing the angry alterna-chick thing Canadians never let her forget this. Never. Lol She thought leaving Canada would make everyone forget. Never. #tallpoppysyndrome Sometimes a DJ would start playing You Ought to Know and then cut right into Too Hot. 😆 Good times. Millions of albums later, she didn’t mind. 😏

This song and Alanis's other song "Plastic" was another hit from that time. Oh and "Joey" from "Friends" was in the video too. Check it out if no one has seen her other old videos pre Jagged Little pill".

I don't know why she's so ashamed of this stuff--it's some of my favourite Alanis--so catchy and not at all angsty or angry...

I totally did a ballet jazz choreographed dance number to this in 1991, lol. I was 7. I didn’t know this song was by the same person behind “Ironic” until a decade or so ago.
@dannywapbang6 жыл бұрын
I like this Alanis more than the one we know now. "Head Over Feet" and "Ironic" are the only songs I like by Alanis Morissette. However, Alanis? "Fate Stay with Me"? "Too Hot"? "An Emotion Away"? Hell yeah.

Despite her intensely HATING this era, I actually like it. A lot. It's far more melodic, she seemed to be singing more, and she could definitely dance. Quite surprised.

Nah she SANG her guts in jagged little pill. This one's just got few cliche "pop" runs and is up beat.

She doesn't hate it. She has said she isn't embarrassed about anything she has done. She was going to put some of these song on her greatest hits album and the label went uh no. The label was the one embarrassed about this. They even had her label in Canada pull her two albums when Jagged Little Pill came out. I guess it is hard to sell an angst ridden singer when these are floating around. Though seems to me most Canadians knew this and it was always talked about on the radio here about her transformation.

I can just see Hands Clean telling her SMILE! BE BRIGHT! DO THAT DANCE AGAIN FOR THE 26TH HIGH ENERGY TIME! (Im exhausted just watching her). and her probably wanting to absolutely kill herself. She was adorable though. Sad that men hitting on her & taking advantage of her probably made her not want to look like that again for 30 years.

I danced to this song in a dance class when I was 7. For the longest time I had no idea it was the same Alanis as Jagged Little Pill…

So i came to see what Alanis' pre-JLP music was like and i was not expecting this! Couldn't be more different from her more well-known stuff like "You Oughta Know", "Hands Clean", and "Ironic"......This is like Janet's "Nasty" but done by a white girl!!

She sounded happy, though. Listen to her chipper tones and infectious giggle on "Oh, Yeah" and compare it to her seething, world-weary growls on "Jagged Little Pill" just four years later. Of course, she was just 16, and it seemed things were so much simpler then. After coming to America Alanis not only embraced, but fairly embodied the disenchanted "angry grrl" tone of my late '90's gen-X peeps, who never really knew how good they had it.

I like to think that Alanis is an Immortal. She's as HOT back in the 80's and 90's as she is now. Her beauty is ageless and I would give anything to sit down and have a few drinks with her and talk. I've had a major crush on Alains since "You Can't Do That On Television" Ahhhh, The memories of my youth.

Before people diss her early work, ask yourself, are you the same person you were when you were 16? I'm certainly not. You know, if you listen to her first recording "Fate Stay With Me," as well as the albums "Alanis" and "Now is the Time" they're all very strong lyrically. The music might have been a bit, well, over-the-top pop, but she's always been a great songwriter.
