Setting a murder or two in a hospital makes for high tension. The actors work well together. The background of war with doddle bugs adds to the anxiety. Sim's face can convey everything. His voice adds another dimension again. This is a great movie. Thanks.

The perfect film. Strong story, clever script, brilliant acting, direction and filming. The first film to be made entirely in Pinewood after the war. The whole film was made in the studio with the exception of the few seconds at the beginning with the postman cycling to the hospital. From a very good book by the late writer Christianna Brand. Exactly! The body and how the artist moves is an essential part of skilled acting. Several of our great actors were in the circus, danced or boxed in their youths. Of course this was primarily nearly a century ago now. Learning the movement skills, laid down the neurotransmitter patterns, at their young ages, assisting in fostering the development of their verbal timing. (I realize that’s more than most anyone desires to know!)

Like most British people my age, I have loved my fellow Scot Alastair Sim since I was a child and saw him on TV in the St Trinian’s films, Scrooge and An Inspector Calls. He’s one of the most adorable screen personas ever. He’s superb in this film, with his briefcase suspended from his umbrella over his shoulder, his twirling round on revolving seats, peeking at the last page to see who the murderer is and getting it wrong, it’s all brilliantly eccentric and terribly funny, yet the film is not a comedy and he comes across as idiosyncratic, ferociously clever and not an idiot. Leo Genn and Trevor Howard are terrific as always, grounding the film, and one wonders why Sally Gray wasn’t a huge star, she’s gorgeous and effective - though she does get wheeled in for brain surgery in false eyelashes and full make up! Megs Jenkins was best known when I was at school for advertising Tetley’s Tea! I love how in these old movies anyone in hospital is always offered a cigarette! Great plot too, I had no idea whodunnit, it wasn’t too contrived, I’m sure this bears repeated viewing, Sidney Gilliat is better known (to me) as a writer or producer, but he pulls off this movie off with flair.

LOL..when I was nursing in Nursery and NICU in early 70s the nurses break room was the room of the "big smoke out" ...even drs came in to smoke. Years later smoking was banned inside hsp...and so on breaks even thru rain, snow & storm nursing personnel, drs, and other hsp employees were at hsp exterior entrances smoking and so visitors and others had to walk thru clouds of cig smoke. albuq nm

I visited a friend in an Ottawa hospital in 1972, and we all smoked right in her room! There must not have been an oxygen outlet in the room though, I'm sure. By the time I was hospitalized the 1st time in 1981 we had to go to the visiting room to smoke, and by the next time, about 1987, we had to go outside. I believe now there is no smoking on hospital property at all, but I'm sure some people find a way, in a parkade, or around a corner. In the dead of a northern Canada winter that rule puts great hardship on some people, making them go a LONG way from the door at some hospitals when it's -20 C (-4 F) or colder, even through snow and ice in a wheelchair for some! I've quit, but some people will risk their health for it, obviously. I was once one of those who would do anything for a smoke, but I'm too old for that now.

Set in Victorian London, the film was being directed by George Cukor, and starred Ingrid Bergman [+Charles Boyer & Joseph Cotton]. Van Druten suggested that Lansbury would be perfect for the role of Nancy Oliver, a conniving cockney maid; she was accepted for the part, although, since she was only 17, a social worker had to accompany her on the set. Obtaining an agent, Earl Kramer, she was signed to a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, earning $500 a week and using her real name as her professional name.[22] Upon release, Gaslight received mixed critical reviews, although Lansbury's role was widely praised; the film earned six Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Supporting Actress for Lansbury." Based on a lost Golden Age novel by Christianna Brand, released recently by the wonderful British Literary Crime Classics. It might not have changed film making history, but it's still a finely acted and highly entertaining old fashioned murder mystery of the kind that are not made anymore. A bit of an atmospheric lost gem in fact. I am happy both the book and the film are given a new leash of life and that there is still an audience enjoying these little portraits of a black and white long gone world full of mystery romance and adventure.

They are not made anymore because these films depended upon a supply of actors who had spent years in Rep theatre learning their craft before appearing on screen.. That situation carried on until the 1980s. Alas that generation of fine actors has passed away and never will be replaced.!! Apparently , David Tennant is now considered our " leading " actor..?? Sums it up really..?

@@2msvalkyrie529It appears that the fine actors are cut from a different jib than todays actors, and I’m sure these actors came from a different theatre variety

🦋 The film “An inspector Calls” also starring Alastair Sim is also excellent. It is the equal of this one imo and has a twist at the end just as dramatic.

Masterpiece. It’s as a good sense of humor in it as well. You watched to the end?

I did watch it until the end, and that role was tailor made for Alastair. He was great in “Green For Danger” too. Another end with a twist!

This was a well written skript. And with the realities of the Buzz bombs And that moment in sudden silence ?? Gave it more suspenseful guessing. Which the Ending was perfectly not predictable. I really appreciate Alastair Sim's as He has that emotional way in expressing his acting. Excellent Flick !

Brilliant. I'm writing this standing on my head because Alistair Sim and the plot had me bamboozled. What now though ? I've just hit the ceiling of brilliance 😂

I do not think that I have seen this movie before tonight, but I do know for sure that I have seen this same scenario. Am I just having a 'senior moment' and have just forgotten that I really have seen this movie before...I'm 67..LOL...or is there another movie that used this same plot ? Oh well...I thoroughly enjoyed watching this...what a cast..!! Thanks, Retrospective, for giving us this movie.

The Carey Treatment with James Coburn had similar plot of a killer deliberating mixing up the oxygen tanks during an operation.

The understated wit and humour - even in a murder thriller - it kept my attention in every moment. Interesting to see that understated English with was around in movies way back then.

Many great actors merely play themselves in great roles, whereas character actors completely transform from one film to the next. In art, I'm reminded of impressionism and cubism styles that may mask an inability to paint as well as our best illustrators.

Good one. I didn't guess the killer, for a change. So many red herrings. Alistair Sim was hilarious.Trevor Howard was so young. The movie made me realize what it must have been like to live during the Blitz. Hearing the rockets fly over and wondering where they were going to land looks terrifying.

Support cast great too of course, love Trevor Howard. Fun to watch, & reminded of me the similar story lined Coma, which I have.

For more, and diverse, see Mr Sim as the upright (but not quite right) Headmistress and her racing tout brother/ nemesis in the St Trinnian's films, also from this B&W era. The school and the girls were inspired by the often savage pen and ink cartoons of Ronald Searle.
