I saw Albert play last night in London. Mind blowing gig. 69 years old and he's totally undiminished - in his picking and vocally. Threw in a few Gram Parsons, Emmylou and Travelling Wilburys covers and a barnstorming version of Country Boy. One of the real all time greats and great to chat to afterwards.

I don't think the point was to impress anyone, it's just one of his signature songs. It's part of his style and has a grace to it that's hard to beat. Keep in mind too the Albert Lee never really hit it big on his own but he was and still is one of the most sought after studio musicians in the world. The best of the current and previous generation all name him as inspiration, even Clapton and BB King look to him. Even if he never made Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest guitarist.

I saw Albert Lee with The Everly Brothers live as well, twice in the '80s. Wow you nailed it. Otherworldly for sure. They were all outstanding! And on top of that the opening band was the original Crickets with Sonny Curtis in Buddy Holly's place. Great show all around !!! One of the best I'd ever seen. The thing that struck me most about Albert Lee was how unasuming and humble he seemed while backing the Everlys but then they graciously left the stage for a few tunes ( Country Boy being one of them ) and let the spotlight shine on Albert. Then he ripped it up. Fantastic. He should be a household name.

None would ever know or suspect from his quiet & gentle conversation..A guitar genius, & any honest & sincere guitar players just have to admit the best. When he played in Emmy Lou Harris's "Hot Band" way back, she said, "folk try to emulate him but they can't" . ( NB * I think that's Sterling Ball on Bass- son of the strings maker EARNIE BALL.)

The thing with Albert Lea which is really unique and what a lot of people don’t realize is that he’s not just got great technique and speed. The biggest thing that makes him stand apart from other players is his ability to improvise and play the piece of music completely differently every time he plays it, the endless ideas that he produces with speed fluency timing and swing is never the same on any song. I am not sure how he does this because lots of guitarists can learn a solo or a challenging piece of music note for note by copying it, but Albert will play it different every night and it will sound incredible.
