Fun facts about this album ✏️: • The album's name is a sarcastic name to bash the American Dream, She put an exclamation mark at the end to show that she is being Sarcasric . • The album cover: Chuck ( her sister shot it ), She had an alternate cover but her manager Ben basically told her that is NOT happening so they took the one that you see! . The sky is painted ( Refrence to Norman Rockwell ), She is giving us our hand As she's taking us through this journey and also it's a reference to the lyric " You lose your way just take my hand " in Mariners Apartment Complex. There are flames in the back which is a reference to The Greatest " L.A's in flame it's getting hot " and also in Mariners " You could see my heart burning in the distance ). She is wearing neon as she reference neon in ALOT of lines. She has Duke Nicholson ( Jake Nicholson's grandson ) who is her friend . They are also on a boat for the reason you said . breakdown ❤️ . 1. Lana's favorite track is the title track, She loved it so much that she made it the name of the album, Altough she doesn't say the name of the song/album, It's full of references of paintings and colours which ties it all together ( Norman Rockwell the painter ). The song has actually changed alot from when it started, She broke it down into two songs which are this and Dark But Just A Game, You can see that while she's singing the alternate version in a NFR! IG live . P.S : it's also Jack's fav. 2. Mariners Apartment Complex is her second favourite and she says it's a close second to the title track, She said she was sp hesitant whether she wanted to open the album up with it or Norman as she said they basically sum up the whole album and the vibe/tone of it. She knew someone who they were walking together at the Mariners Apartment Complex and he told her " You and I are the same, We're both miserable ", So she looked at him and said that it's a false thing to say ( That they are common in misery ), So she was saying that she was pretty happy, And she went to write about it . 3. Venice B*tch is a song that Lana made for people to listen to when they're driving, Jack said it's his favourite in a different way, It was supposed to have the backing vocals " Get high, Drop acid, Never die, Not tonight, Lake Placid " but she removed it Cause it didn't fit the song in her opinion, Which she later used in Taco Truck x VB which she said it's the grungier of original version the have worked on before VB was what it is now . 4. F*ck It ily, Lana made this song, It's also the last song they have worked on on that album . Lana says during a BBC interview: " That one was the last track I did for the record and I wanted also something with some surf drums, so we did that last and it’s just little of a mood track and I knew I wanted to do a video where I was surfing in it. So it was more of a fun thing to put together. " 5. Doin' Time. Lana made this song as her label wanted her to cover the Sublime's song for their documentary, She later decided to put it on the album, She thought it went well with the previous track and she loved the og song. 6. Love Song. Lana said the song too sturdy that's why she wanted to have Visuals for it, She had in mind a painted video but it never happened. 7. Cinnamon Girl. Lana described it as the Sauciest song on the album, Jack says she was having a bad day writing it in the studio. It's the saddest song off the record and it has one of the best lyrics on the album. It's also the second most streamed despite it not being a single ( It's a fan favourite since she had teased it on her ig back in 2018 ). 8. How To Disappear. One of the last songs Lana wrote for the album, She loved the song and later sampled it in " Wild At Heart " , She wrote alot of it while writing Cinnamon Girl and Jack jokes about it and says it was about her being f'd up in Boston. She debuted the entire song in a live performance in October 2018 9. California. Lana co-wrote the song with The Last Shadow Puppets which are a band she was a part on ( She wrote Dealer too with them ), She says : “We had a little rock band on the side. We were very messy! But it’s cool ‘California’ made it on there - I feel like it’s a little piece of our friendship band.” 10. The Next Best American Record. Lana had this song before her previous album " Lust For Life " but she thought it didn't fit the album, So when she was making the album ( NFR! ), She knew she was going to put it on it as she had always loved it and she thought it fitted the album, So she changed some lyrics and some parts of the production, You could also see a scrapped music video of it during the LFL era, Which was later used as a " White Mustang " mv ( A song from LFL ) As she loved the mv . 11. The Greatest. A fan favourite and Jack said it's one of his faves in a tweet. It has a double mv along F It Ily, And it got " Best New Track " on Pitchfork. It was sent to the grammys but didn't get nominated, The title track got nominated instead . 12. Bartender. She had the song since 2017 after making " Lust For Life ", She says to Pitchfork : I’ve got a couple of other tracks [to release in 2018]. I’ve got this weird track called ‘Bartender’ that doesn’t belong to a record yet . 13. Happiness Is A Butterfly. It is inspired by a novelist " Nathaniel Hawthorne " which mentioned the line " Happiness Is A Butterfly " In one of his novels . 14. Hope Is A Dangerous... . Lana Had been Journaling this song for years, It was the first track to be worked on for the album, It was one of the hardest tracks to write as Lana wanted to write what she wants in a very specific way inside her head, she released it as a single cause she was proud of it ( In 2018 ) And it basically told everyone that the album is going to be as strong the this song, Maybe it's a piano ballad, But lyrically it's much more than just that . Along side that in get free the song you mentioned, the 1 minute sounds at the end open the theme for NFR. Lust for life is my favorite and personally think it’s her best I feel like these 2 and many other NFR Stans don’t like LFL. I doubt they will like it, but we shall see.

I love this breakdown! One thing I want to touch on is that I get a completely different vibe from How to Disappear, I hear it as a sympathetic or pitying story about people who you love but are losing themselves to addiction. "I watched the guys getting high as they fight for the things that they hold dear, to forget the things they fear" "you just crack another beer, and pretend that you're still here" reminds me so much about people getting lost in addiction. and how they may want to be getting clean or getting better to keep their loved ones in their lives, but because of the addiction they're still going and getting high. And at the end, they didn't get better , and did end up losing themselves which is why Lana is writing from the perspective of reminiscing about them years and years later.

I have a fun fact about Lana actually: she’s in my closest chain of ‘degrees of separation’ from Taylor Swift haha. This could be a stretch, but the Beautiful Losers line could also be a reference to the 2008 film 'Beautiful Losers," which began in the 90s and is about DIY aesthetics and street-style art like; skateboarding, graffiti, and underground punk/ hip-hop music/ underground musicians in the US. It also premiered at the IFC Theater in New York City in 2008 which was when Lana was living in NY!!
