Fall 1994: I took a train and moved 14 hours away from home, and bought two albums-The Cult S/T, Tom Petty Wildflowers-within weeks of starting my new adventure. They became comforts to me, living in a new town with no friends (yet). The Cult album initially threw me for a loop, obviously being nothing like any of their previous albums. (They were the first band I ever saw live, on the 1989 Sonic Temple tour). Wildflowers was the first Petty album I ever owned. Got the first run edition with the cardboard slipcase, and no radio edit (that changed the line "let's roll another joint" to "let's hit another joint"). Living sort of in a bubble back then, I didn't realize how well-received Wildflowers was with the critics, nor how successful (or not) it was. Finally: not sure why it took me 30 years, but I finally bought Amorica on CD this summer, and it came with the original banned cover. I really like it! It's an album I put on and let spin, as opposed to listening for specific tracks.

Big fan of Yes - Talk - I feel a lot of their post-Union work is overlooked, but both Talk and The Ladder are really great albums
@georgeprice4212Ай бұрын
Yes hadn’t spent their entire career with Atlantic/ATCO, with the Union album being on Arista Records, as a “follow up” to the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe album, also on Arista.

“It’s Good To Be King” is a stunning song off Wildflowers, just wonderful…I had predicted that Voodoo Lounge would age well back in 1994, some really cool tunes on that one….Thanx for taking us down memory lane Brendon😂!

Cool video, as always. As for me...: Rolling Stones - it's a killer album in my opinion. Love it a lot Tom Petty - another great one for me. the sound is perfect for my ears Black Crowes - Not a fan of this one. It's weaker than its predecessors imho Yes - very good one. Love this era of the band Neil Young - I've never listened to this one. Will give it a try :)

The next big think to fill the void of grunge was Britpop. Some amazing bands from the UK that changed the musical landscape, Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede etc.

I love Talk. I’m one of the “Union” haters and I thought “West Coast Yes” was done after that. I remember hearing “The Calling” on the radio without any awareness they had made an album. It made me so happy to get one more from that lineup. I think “Endless Dream” is one of their greatest songs. It would be great to see more people revisit this because many probably missed it at the time.

Turn It Upside Down- Spin Doctors Dulcinea- Toad The Wet Sprocket Weezer-Blue Album Dinosaur Jr.- Without A Sound Morrissey- Vauxhall and I Merle Haggard-1994 Cake- Motorcade Of Generosity They Might Be Giants- John Henry These are my favorites from 1994. For some reason it feels like Gin Blossoms and Aerosmith had albums come out in 1994 because they had songs and videos in heavy rotation that year but Get A Grip by Aerosmith came out in 1993 and New Miserable Experience actually was released in 1992 but didn’t blow up right away. Also it feels like Counting Crows released August And Everything After that year because it was big that year but it actually was released in 1993.

Voodoo Lounge is a stronger album than Steel Wheels (funnily enough, I enjoy listening to the latter more). As S.T. Erlewine points out in his AllMusic review, VL feels more like a return to form for the Stones than its predecessor. Ironically, the “comeback” album Steel Wheels came only three years after their previous album while VL was released five years after SW … huh
@JohnMacRae23Ай бұрын
Don't see how the Petty and Crowes albums can be called "Comeback" lps, they were released at the height of their career arc's. Same goes for Neil Young who already was on a resurgence roll with Freedom, Ragged Glory, Harvest Moon and Sleeps With Angels was a continuation of that. I agree with you on Yes's talk... to me it's one of their most underrated albums, a great album, but they were on a crap label at the time so the promo was almost non existent.
@BrendonSnyderАй бұрын
Except that Amorica and Sleeps With Angels did not continue the rise/comeback and were less successful and started the decline. As for Petty, I explained that one in the video very clearly about the comeback from the Full Moon Fever selling 5 million but the follow-up only doing 2 million then with Wildflowers it was bigger than the previous album selling 3 million. Make sense now? Additionally these are loose ideas, don’t take them so seriously. We’re all just having a good time here.
@JohnMacRae23Ай бұрын
@@BrendonSnyder Hey Brendon, it's my take and loose opinion as well, i don't take any of these videos seriously. The term comeback i think is what we disagree on. Godspeed man i enjoy your videos.
