Alec, Once you're satisfied with the wedges securing the bottom half of hammer, maybe you should make a skirt of sheet metal to go around it blocking debris, scale etc from falling down and around the wedges ? Partially for fire resistance and more for cleanliness as well as offering someplace to set work aside between hammering to cool. It will also help keep lubricants etc out of wood components below hammer heads.

Hey Alec - a quick note on why two-part power hammers are two-part. The anvil on those hammers is just the anvil cap - the absolute uppermost part of the hammer. It then bolts to the actual anvil, which is an extremely large concrete cone that's entirely underground. On a 300 lb hammer, an efficient anvil will be around 7500 lbs (25x the hammer). The conical structure also helps resist the compression and settling caused by hammering. The hammer body is then bolted to the anvil using large springs to reduce tensile stress on the anvil caused by rebound. Having an appropriately sized anvil is incredibly important for hammer efficiency/transfer of energy to the work. Think of your actual anvil - a 4ish pound hammer on a 200 pound anvil. The peak force a hammer develops, and thus the material deformation per blow, is almost entirely due to the inertia of the anvil providing that initial resistance to movement. The ground just isn't strong enough and will act as a spring. On large power hammers (1 ton and larger), the overwhelming majority of the hammer's mass is underground, and these concrete anvils can reach 20+ feet underground and weigh close to a hundred thousand pounds. If you check out some youtube videos of open-die forging on large A frame hammers, you can actually see the anvil concrete platform, and the machine will have springs to bolt it down. Past about 16 tons, this becomes impractical and hammer design changes over to counter-blow hammers to negate the need of a giant, multi-story anvil pour.
@WillStelterbladesmith3 жыл бұрын
I’d suggest looking at the original blueprints for hammers in this size range 👍🏻 quite a bit different than what industrial hammers call for

Original starter is a star/delta, I had that exact Telemechanique starter on a thicknesser. The RS one you've got is a DOL. The star delta gives you a soft start (dodgy description but there you go) for the large motor so it doesn't blow a fuse or trip a breaker. The DOL stands a real chance of tripping breakers as the motor will have MASSIVE inrush current draw at startup. The earth bypasses all the contactors, you don't switch an earth connection, and connects to a bus bar in the enclosure to ensure the metal box is earthed and then heads from there to terminate inside the terminal box on the motor, earthing the motor and generally the whole machine. Far from an expert here but that's how I understand it.
@stefankaufmann82573 жыл бұрын
Star/Delta is not a soft start, it only reduces the inrush current, the stress for motor and drive components is reduced, but still very high. Soft start is done by phase-fired controller, that allows you to softly increase motor speed. That's the way i start big motors, as it is more healthy for the motor and the drive components - especially for the belts, as they wear out pretty hard, when the motor hast to start under load. There is an earth terminal in the box of every motor starter. If it's lost, no problem, just use a screw terminal.
@shammient3 жыл бұрын
@@stefankaufmann8257 Like I said, soft start was a poor description. I use VFD's these days but i did setup a Star/delta the other day and it got the job done. Quite right, the inrush is still very high but at least you wont trip out your circuit. I'd say that DOL would likely have tripped a breaker.
@stefankaufmann82573 жыл бұрын
@@shammient VFD is the best but also the most expensive methode, it's only cost effectiv, if you have to start very often. I often used VFD to eliminate Dalander circuits, it reduces wiring, inrush current and speed setting is more versatile. Compact soft starters for small motors like mcd100 from Danfoss are not pricier than a star/delta, as you need less components and less work. I also used star/delta, but not very often - it's not very commun in the idustry, where you can directly start motors up to 7,5 or even 11kW, when overload protection is done by klixon. May i ask, what brand of VFD you use?

Quick tip for the next time you find yourself wiring in a 3 phase motor starter, in particular if you need a reduced voltage start don't get a Wye/Delta starter, get a VFD. For a very small amount of money (comparatively) you get all kinds of extra features. You can set the motor ramp time, maximum speed (frequency), as well as use the same motor on a much wider range of input voltage sources. For example, if you have a 50Hz motor and a 60Hz source (or the other way round) it will work properly at the proper speed. Or if you want to run the hammer a little faster or slower (+10Hz, -35Hz give or take) you can do that as well. But the biggest advantage by far is that a single phase supply can be used to power your three phase motor. You would have to upsize it for that, but its worth it.

You might want to be careful with DOL starters for big motors. The inrush current can damage you motor (if started to often ofc) especially when to motor isn't not designed to handel the full inrush current. The star/delta starter actually limits the voltage on the motor windings for a few seconds, witch will, in turn lower the inrush current. If you want to know what inrush current is basically that the motor, when it is running, generates current (like a generator) ofc the motor uses this current (also called EMF) . But when the motor isn't running there is is no generated current, but the motor still needs the same amount of current, so it will try to pull all of it from the wall. And as the motor begins to turn faster and faster the EMF will rise and the current needed will drop.

The less belts you run the less efficient it will be as the efficiency of a belt drive is directly proportional to the difference in tension between the tight side to the slack side (greater the difference, greater the efficiency). With it not having the optimal number of belts, you'll be tensioning the belts more (to transfer the power without slipping), reducing the difference in tension, reducing the efficiency. If the motor is powerful enough and the belts strong enough, it'll work fine but you'll be paying more on your leki bill.

Watching the video of the forge and then watching you go to work on/with the power hammer reminds me of a trip I took in college in a class to an industrial forge. They weren't casting anything (that I recall), but were using dies in these giant pneumatic hammers. The workpiece would come out the oven (which I think was an induction heater), the worker would grab it with tongs, put it in the three part die's first slot *CLANG!* put it in the second slot *CLANG!* put it in the third slot *CLANG!*. Then he'd throw the cutoff over his shoulder into a bin, while another would move the forged piece into a different bin. Over and over. The power hammers were so big, that, 100 yards away, I could feel them shaking the slab of the warehouse we were in and so loud, that I couldn't hear the engineer telling us about what they did even when I dared (admittedly stupidly) to take one of my earplugs out for a moment to try and hear him.
