Alex Honnold is a professional adventure rock climber whose audacious free-solo ascents of America’s biggest cliffs have made him one of the most recognized and followed climbers in the world. He recently sat with Lance in his Las Vegas home to discuss his entry into the sport, the inherent risks with free soloing and the documentary Free Solo. The film chronicles his free solo scale unsupported and without ropes up the famous El Capitan, the 3,000 vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park.

My favorite thing with Alex is his frequent use of the “shrug...” He always seems to end his statements with this shrug that says, “maybe everything I just said is wrong, or makes no sense...or is pointless.” I love him for this...he’s content with the ever changing nature of life.

Armstrong is definitively a natural at interviews, if you haven't, check out his podcasts (the Forward and The Move). He does seem a bit hungover in this one, however, his insight into bike racing in the Move is second to none, exceptional. Say what you will about Armstrong, but there is mutual respect between these 2, arguably in the top 1% best athletes in our time.

Loved the interview, found it totally by chance. I have recently started looking back at Lances life in cycling . I used to race in ireland back in the late 70s as a schoolboy. Stephen Roche and Sean Kelly were our local heros then. I think cycling hasnt suffered any, from the things that happened in the past. In fact i have watched so much stuff recently , all the races were won on a level playing field. Enough said , total respect for Lance , and its great to see him be himself ( i like swearing also) . Loved this interview , 2 great guys just chatting as if there were no cameras. Keep up the great podcasts , Alex , i think you should start doing them also. I respect how much you love climbing , nothing excites me more than seeing people speaking about the love of their profession , passionately.

@@Alex1233192 Lance was a terrific cyclist "in my book." To win all those races? Do you think it was just a syringe that pedaled the bike to victory? I don't think so! From what I understand, performance-enhancing injections were just a part of the cycling world at the time. Maybe not an ideal situation, but I believe Lance was following the advice of the sports-medical people in charge of his training. I'll always respect the heck out of Lance Armstrong! It's not a perfect world, but to have attained such a level of excellence in competitive cycling deserves to be fully appreciated and celebrated. At least "in my book."

@@This1Person I could not agree more with your accurate statement @This Guy. Mr. Steck was indeed one of the world's greatest athletes and mountain climbers. His record speed climb og the Eiger stands as one of the greatest feats of all time. Interestingly enough, if both men were together and participated in this conversation they would humbly shy away from accepting such an honor for themselves but my guess is they would congratulate each other for their monumental feats! Thank you for your correct observation and your kind and thoughtful comments sir! With much respect!

Terrific interview. I share Lance Armstrong's fear of heights, so I could appreciate his take on the documentary, and he made me laugh out loud several times with some of his comments about how scary it was. (Never knew he was so funny!). Alex opens up to him, perhaps because of the down to earth (even earthy) style of Lance's interviewing, or because he's a fellow athlete, and he gave some great insights into the art of free solo climbing. The story Alex shares around 47:46 is unfortunately familiar. When I was first getting into climbing I was in the Gunks with a guide and we had just done a couple of routes and were cleaning up our gear when we heard shouts for help. We ran over and saw the aftermath of a guy who had just repelled 200 feet to the ground when his anchor gave out. I recall that he was miraculously alive (I think he fell through some trees that might have broken his fall a touch), but his body was in pieces. I helped carry him to the fire road and I could literally see through his skull and see his brain. I read in the paper that he died en route to the hospital. The incident shook me up pretty bad - I was around 17 at the time - and I stopped climbing for a while. When I got back into it, it was exclusively indoors. Over time the memory faded and the reality that the sport is usually pretty safe started to take hold, but it will never be fully out of my mind and it hits me every time I'm on rock. It speaks a lot to Alex's mental strength, I think, that he's seen stuff like that, has friends that have died, is aware of all that could go wrong, but overcomes it to continue pursuing his passion.

At 36:19 Alex talks about his high-end climbing shoes (La Sportiva) but he does not mention the brand -- he does mention the model. At a recent outdoor trade show, Adidas was full-on trying to invade the market with rock climbers demonstrating in person at an enormous booth. Meanwhile, La Sportiva had a tiny booth, but we all knew that Alex used their shoes, literally trusting his life to those shoes. It was a bigger statement than anything Adidas could conjure with all their flash and money.

Adidas owns Five Ten. Five Ten climbing shoes are great. In fact I prefer their rubber to La Sportiva rubber. But climbing shoes are like surf boards. You want a quiver of different types of shoes for different types of climbing. The ones Alex reference are TC Pros, which are great for granite crack climbing for cracks that are hand size to offwidth as well as slab climbing because they edge really well which is the type of climbing for you're going to find on the Freerider route on El Cap.

Just love this kid. Alex just turned rock climbing into a respectable sport that finally caught the attention of the mainstream media. Can't wait to watch free solo, though I know my hands would get wet and my knees so weak that I couldn't even get up on my feet :(.

Spoken like a person who has never ridden a bike up switchbacks for weeks at a time. The level of fitness involved in that is quite literally a the cellular level. It's part ot the reason that drugs became so prevalent. It never had anything to do with size or the typical thing. For world class cyclists it was always about energy reserves and muscle degradation. In that sense it isnt much different than using oxygen to survive at altitude. Cycling for weeks up mountain roads is just as brutal.

I actually like that Lance is fully involved in this conversation--it's like listening to two good friends chatting instead of a "worshipping the idol who must be the only way to speak" interview. And I think that Lance does let Alex talk fully. It does have a more conversational back-and-forth feeling, but I enjoyed it and am glad this is how it played out.

The "fraud"? Lance won SEVEN Tour de France races. It wasn't a syringe that pedaled his bicycle. Try just riding a bicycle from start to finish on the Tour de France course and you'll maybe come to revise your estimation of Lance.
