Since the latest crop of 1/2 ton trucks was launched I've fielded a staggering number of questions from viewers asking: Can I replace my old 3/4 ton truck with a new 1/2 ton truck now that they are so capable? As always, the answer isn't as easy as yes or no.

There used to be way, way more reasons to buy an HD truck...1/2 tons used to have horrible brakes, now they don't. Their suspensions used to be so floppy and loose they were ridiculous to drive and load up; now they're better. That's not to say that 3/4 ton or larger trucks still don't have more capability that makes sense for regular heavy users. But a 1/2 ton definitely does way more these days than 20 years ago. (And most full size trucks, 1/2 ton or otherwise, are being grossly underutilized by their owners anyway...)

Answer: yes you still need a 3/⁴ ton for safety sake, if you have any intention of towing more than 10,000 pounds for extended trips, you should be buying a heavy duty truck

Mitchell Mackenzie there’s no hard and fast rule, it’s all up to the situation or circumstances. A flatbed trailer loaded with concrete to 10k will tow much different to a 30ft 10k travel trailer. Being knowledgeable and understanding of what you’re towing, where you’re towing it to and having it set up so that it is balanced is always necessary.

That would generally be true if we were comparing new vs new, but newer 1/2 tons probably would handle a trailer of any size better than any 20+ year old truck. Older trucks had terrible brakes and boat-like steering. Besides that, if there were actually to be an accident, newer vehicles of any kind would absolutely be safer. Trucks designed in the 90s where just death traps.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 5 жыл бұрын
@@AkioWasRight that is a fairly vague statement as well. A 1999 350/3500 for example would likely be much better in terms of trailer control than any new 1/2 ton. Passenger safety is an entirely different topic.

@@ALMX5DP Are you kidding me? We had a 2003 Ford F250 Super Duty, and it handled and stopped like crap. The steering system on that truck was made from wet noodles, and the brakes were weak and vague without a trailer. With our 2017 F150, which isn't necessarily the replacement, I can tell you it handles everything that truck could far better. We don't realize just how much trucks have improved in the last 15-30 years. It's like day vs night. They handle more like sports these days than trucks of years past.

Scotty so if the 2017 isn’t necessarily the replacement, why not (if it’s so much better)? There are improvements that certainly help, but if properly taken care of an older vehicle is by no means unsafe. My 99 F-150 was great and towed splendidly as I kept it in good shape.

I can see the argument for 1/2 tons. They arent really less efficient than even some pedestrian large CUVs and have good passenger space while allowing for a bed full of junk, towing way beyond a CUV etc. All while being very reasonably priced.

Aside from the 12" lifted brodozers on low-pro tires and other similar wacky trucks, how could you possibly know whether people have a "valid" reason for a truck? Maybe they like to go camping on the weekends, or have a hobby "antiquing" or are doing a lot of home improvements. Pickup trucks are super useful and for many people it makes sense to have only 1 vehicle and have it be a pickup rather than buying some old beater truck and some other vehicle for those times when they have "no apparent reason" for a pickup.

The 1/2 ton is very good for nearly everyone IMO. Of course, there are people that do serious towing on a daily basis where a 3/4 is the way to go. On the farm, we have a triple axle trailer where we use the 3/4 but nearly everything else we use what is handy.

You need the Etorque hemi to tow the full 12k, the regular hemi only does about 10k. As you said, higher trims will have lower ratings due to the weight of equipment, but the worst case for an etorque hemi is 11,240 (a fully loaded limited) unless their website is lying. Also if the trailer doesn't way more than 7k, he could go for a v6 truck with a 3.55 rear end and still make out with a competent truck, although for smaller engines, I have to give it to the ford and gm turbo engines (the 2.7L's for each). On the other hand 2019 2500's supposedly have a 4k payload rating. Now thats with a regular cab 8f bed 2wd tradesman, but you would still get about 3500lbs payload with a crewcab 8ft bed, which at that point you do have a decent trailers worth of payload.

One element I would be concerned with that was not addressed here. Dodge has a long history of weak ball joints and suspension problems. I would trust the live axle and heavy components of the 2500 over the years far more than I would the 1500's suspension. This would be true of other items which simply are heavier and better for the loads in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. This would be true of a 30 year old medium duty with lower power and other ratings than a current 1 ton as well. For strength and reliability under load, "Bigger is better". Having said that, I do value your KZbin videos far more than most others. Well done and keep up the good work! Tim. PS: I have had a 2006 Ram 3500 SRW SLT Cummins Megacab G56 with 215,000 miles since new.

It's been my experience that the vast majority of folks tend to "over-truck" in the first place. Sometime it's status or self-satisfaction, sometimes its for those edge-case use scenarios that never occur, sometimes it's just lack of education, and often it's just dealerships and manufacturers pushing "more truck" because more margin. Do a survey of non-commercial owners, ask how many with 4x4 ever engage the system. How many really need V8 power (or bigger displacement turbo motors in the case of Ford)? How many need 800-1000 lb/ft of torque in a Diesel? How many will really tow 19,000 pounds with their modern 3/4 ton? Pretty much guarantee the mean will fall on "rarely", "not really" "almost never" and "never even close".

All valid points and I agree, 90% of the truck owners will never use their truck to its full potential......but (there’s always a but).......it’s funny how when you buy something and get comfortable with it, you slowly start doing more with it. Take our trailers. When I first met my wife, she had a homemade, 13ft flatbed trailer to tow her 4 wheeler around. Later we bought more 4 wheelers and tried to fit them on the same trailer until they wouldn’t; we had to upgrade trailers. You bet your ass, I wasn’t gonna be put in the position to do that again. Similar story with our truck.... bought a F350 so as not to “under buy” (maybe you’d say I “over-trucked”) but I wasn’t gonna be falling to same ‘trap’ as we had with the trailer. We now pull a 20ft enclosed car trailer, have a slide in the bed camper(with heavy ass slide outs), a small tractor with implements, side by sides, 4 wheelers, etc. I ‘m not listing this to brag, but to use it as a point of needing a larger truck than think you need; I believe most dealers know this also. I agree with you that many dealers may just be selling the high margin trucks/setups but I’d rather the ‘common user’ have more truck than they need...simply because they don’t know why they need it! I’d rather them have that 1000 lb/ft of torque so that when you pull out in front of me like they were driving a Prius, they can actually pull that over loaded trailer of crap they should be. I’d rather them be able to stop because of larger truck brakes, fancy safety features, and trailer brakes because these idiots will be pulling 19,000 lbs at 75 mph because they don’t know any better! Let them buy more truck than they need because I’M safer for it.

I recently replaced a 2008 King cab Nissan Titan with a 2022 RAM 2500 4x4 crew cab Hemi 6.4 Laramie. I don't tow and I don't do off-road. The maximum payload is $100 of groceries from WalMart. I chose the 2500 for the cab headroom, crew cab, 4x4 and technology upgrades. Most vehicles built 2019 and later are available with significant safety upgrades, LED lighting and heated/cooled seats that were not available in 2008. I did try the RAM 1500 and found that the ceiling in the cab was too low due to sunroofs and audio speaker placement. Otherwise, a 1500 would have been enough.

im leaning for a 1/2 ton truck. I tow about 10 tractors to 15 tractors a year max is a 5 hour trip (10lbs max. average weight is 75lbs). newer 1/2 ton's capability is all there. Not quite the need for 3/4 tone just because my payload isnt used frequently, and 3/4 tons are a bit more in price.

I was replacing a 1500 long bed ram with the tow package, and to get similar tow and payload ratings in a crew cab (replacing car and truck with one vehicle), I was shopping new 1500's, 2500's and used 2500 trucks. I needed to be able to tow around 10k on a regular basis, without killing the truck. My previous truck would do it, but it was right at or just over the tow rating for it (06 ram 1500 4.7 long bed)- and it was definitely not happy with the load, hence the 2500's being added into the picture. After pricing out my options and what it would cost for the tow capability, and how the truck would end up being optioned at the pricepoint , I ended up purchasing a Nissan Titan xd with the gas engine. Got a nicely optioned 4x4 crew cab SV for about what the others wanted for base work truck 4x2 with the tow package. It's not a "real" 3/4 ton, but it checked all the boxes I need, and I didn't end up with a base model to get there. Not trying to imply it's the choice for everyone, but it's the choice I went with, and I am so far thrilled with it.

Oh man that old Mercedes 4.7 was a real doozie and really shouldn't have been offered on a full size pickup. I remember that truck had a hard time trying to get out of its on way. On top of that, you actually tried towing with it! I'm surprised it didn't blow a gasket. The 5.7 Hemi is a completely different platform and an exceptionally good engine and has proven to last hundreds of thousands of miles towing. If you ever feel the need to upgrade from the Titan than I recommend a 5.7 Hemi with the new Etorque electric system.

@@markm0000 ironically, the only thing that didn't give any issues (other than a lack of power) was the 4.7. The transmission seemed to be the weak spot, as well as electrical gremlins- and fuel economy was evidently not high on the priority list when they built that truck. My new titan actually does better on fuel than the ram did (17ish vs. 15 ish) not too shabby for a significantly heavier vehicle that makes considerably more power.

The durability components were not really addressed. I have an older truck, but most of this will still apply. I decided on a 2500 Suburban over a 1500 Suburban for a lot of reasons. Either was rated to tow 6500lbs or more which is probably the max I would need to tow. But the 7.4L revs a lot lower than the 5.7L and makes its power much lower in the band, so the 7.4 engine is literally only getting about 3/4 the wear that the 5.7L does over the same mileage. In addition, the 7.4 has about 25% more horsepower and torque and both are available at much lower RPMs. The 2500 came with a stronger transmission and heavier duty full-floating rear axle. This means that these components will last longer and be less prone to failure than their 1/2 ton counterparts. For buyers that plan to sell their truck at 50,000 or 100,000 miles, the durability of these components might not matter. But for buyers that want to get 100k, 200k, or even 300k+ out of their truck, having drive trains that are only being used to 50% of their capacity will be a huge factor in longevity and reliability. Another factor to consider is resale. Certain options retain value better and depreciate slower than the base vehicle. 4x4, extended or club cab, and 3/4 or 1 ton are such options. While a new 3/4 ton may only cost 10% more than a 1/2 ton, when 5 or 10 years old, that 3/4 ton will be worth 50% to 100% more than the 1/2 ton.

2:10 If we're going to get technical "this particular" vehicle surely does not have the tow rating it did when it was brand new 20 years ago. Metal fatigue, light rusting, and reduced braking and engine performance is completely normal, and will degrade its performance over time.

I hope the manufacturers take that into consideration when building them. I know OSHA has a 4-1 failure ratio where an object has to withstand 4 times its load rating for a period of time to account for variables such as this. Doing good maintenance should help with the brakes and hopefully keep the diesel running strong. Can't do anything really about metal fatigue or light rust really. I always believed the older a vehicle is the more carefully you push all it's components. Still no guarantee though.

Yes the 1/2 tons can tow equally or better than a 15+ year old 3/4 ton, BUT since these trucks can actually cost the same amount of money depending on how you option them. I rather get more capability,so I would go with a 3/4 ton. I have towed 10k with both a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton and hands down I would choose the 3/4 ton. Also for future proofing, what if you decide to get a bigger RV or tow something heavier than 10k? At least you have a truck already capable of doing the job instead of getting yet another truck.

If you want a 4x4, you should think about what you're going to be doing with your truck. Solid axles are simply better for off-road. But if you're like 95% of us who rarely go off-road but just like the security of having 4x4 for the rare sitcky situation, then IFS would better.

This was used as a tow vehicle for our fifth wheel travel trailer. When I went shopping for a replacement pickup truck I decided almost immediately that I would be in the used truck market with a limit of $25,000. I found a 2004.5 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins Engine, with a 120K miles and a agreeable price of under $20,000. There is no way I am going to take the hit on the moment you drive off in that fancy new truck of 25% of greater. Because I needed something newer to replace our dependable old 2nd generation Dodge Ram I simply took the next generation and then did all the repairs that the newer truck needed like front end work and complete fluid change out for under $2,000.

One day I'd love to get one of those old V10 trucks just to see how they were engineered.

Making a truck with a tow rating of 10,000 lbs and a payload of only 1400 lbs is weird. Just the tongue weight of a 10,000 lbs trailer is supposed to be 1,000-1500 lbs not counting anything else going into or onto the truck. My 1/2 ton has a tow rating of about 7600 lbs with a payload of 1550 which is closer to each other but still would be very close if you wanted to get as close to 7600 lbs and stay under 1550 in the real world. They shouldn't make a truck that is rated to tow 10,000 lbs without a payload rating of at least 2,500 lbs IMO. There should be an official ratio of gvwr, gcwr, and payload so that the manufacturers can't advertise something that isn't realistic at all. If we do our homework before the purchase it will help but they shouldn't be manufacturing a "smoke and mirrors" vehicle.

It's all about getting higher numbers with the cheapest manufacturing costs to fight the tow capacity wars going on at the big 3.

Why would you compare a new truck with a 20 yo truck. May as well compare your new truck to a bigwheel.

I bought a new 3/4 ton last year and for me I just felt like I got more value for what I paid. I didn't get a loaded up version because I wanted to keep cost down and payload capacity up. I probably paid about 4K more than a 1/2 ton, but it has the extra capacity I wanted. I also was interested in a truck with a solid front axle that still felt like a truck when I was driving it. In addition, with the 3/4 ton ride height I am not itching to lift the truck any higher then it came stock. For me I would've put more consideration into the 1/2 ton if the price difference was closer to 10K. At my price point we were talking about a 10% difference give or take when comparing 5.7 hemi to the 6.4 hemi in the 2500.

Alex, I am shopping for a tow vehicle for a 4,200 lb travel trailer, 7.5 wide and 11 ft high. I am considering a 1/2 ton pickup, Dodge Durango and a Jeep. I travel without a trailer about 20,000 miles a year so I also want a good road car but will be trailing cross county another 6 miles a year. I saw you bought the Durango. I don't need a 3rd row.

Put weight on the tung? You need to explain that term for me. Also, isnt the Cummins diesel going to be longer-lasting/more reliable?
@92powerdiesel61
@92powerdiesel61 4 жыл бұрын
The Cummins will last longer. People ignore the fact that they are built differently because the new truck must just be better. If you update the old brakes and actually maintain the old one it'll do just fine. Issue is most people ignore wear items or simply don't think of them.

The Cummins in the 2500 will outlast that 1500. Plus that old 2500 wasnt made by fiat lol.

And in 10 years the Cummins will be worth more. At that age it is done depreciating as long as it does not rust away.

I disagree with the fiat comment. It was probably true in the distant past, but I currently have 3 fca products and they are surprisingly excellent. Two 2014 promasters with over 450,000 (yes 450,000) on each, and a 2015 fiat 500 abarth.

Get a Tundra if you need something beefier than the other 1500 trucks. Tundra is more like a 3/4 truck.
