I've watched this video countless times and never realized at 4:52 when they are doing the big finish Eddie turns from the crowd to face his brother that just gave an awesome solo. True they are giving each other visual cues but you can't deny their smiles of joy to each other. What a moment to captured, two brothers on stage, both rock stars doing what they love.

People who want the man to keep playing when he's 67 years old have to realize the toll this takes on your body. It's not like singing or playing the guitar. It's more like a contact sport. You shouldn't expect a man that age to play rock on drums any more than you would expect a man to play running back in the NFL in his 40s. Alex was great 30 years ago. Let's remember him the way he was.

Yes, he was older and not quite as energetic and doesn't have the same stamina and picked his spots to let loose, but he was still pretty terrific on the 2015 tour. I dont expect him to keep playing without his brother, but if he were to do a side project with guys like Steve Lukather and Billy Sheehan, I have no doubt he would be awesome, even if he's not the Animal Al of the past with flaming drumsticks in 1979 or the ring of flames around his gong from 81-84.

Alex Van Halen was such a sick drummer. I was a fan from the instant I heard a VH tune on the radio. He'd attack the drums with a ferocity that was unmatched. Alex could do no wrong as far as this fan was concerned. From "Ice Cream Man" to "Dance The Night Away" to "Unchained" to "Panama" and the list continues forever. AVH the GOAT of drummers.

@thedpsemporiumofdrumtracks56484 жыл бұрын
A drummers skill is always confined to the era they grew up in, esp when you're touring for 50yrs playing the same style set list. I'm sure in 70s/80s, Alex's skill was highly regarded but having played in metal bands and always on the lookout for extreme or technical drumming, his solo comes across as nothing more than an experienced rock drummer doing an elaborate sound check. It's hard to appreciate what that impression likely was back then, but anyone with a pulse on how high the bar is today to truly stand out.. this would prob win you first place at a middle school talent show.
@boarhog19794 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Drumming has evolved big time since then. Just look at how good some females are. This would be easy stuff for many today and they would go twice as long if need be

The sound of the Simmons made 5150 so powerful. Can't say the same for the drum sound from the first 2 albums too weak and thin sounding!
@benjiarehart28786 жыл бұрын
I agree. Been playing 40 years. I've sampled electronic drums, but never bought them. They give an unrealistic sound, and make a person sound better than they truly are, compared to conventional drums. The sound he's accomplishing is not indicative of his real skill level, which is far lower, and less impressive. He was not the greatest rock drummer in the world then, not even close. He hid the electronics, because, back then, most drummers felt it to be cheating. He knew that, hince hidden, for fear of drum shame. Neil Peart was the best Rock drummer at the time, and there were several others as well, that could pick him apart. He was painstakingly average at best. Nothing wrong with that. He did his job, but greatest, thast a very far stretch of a claim.
