Alex, as usual, yours is the most detailed and comprehensive review in the shortest amount of time than anyone else on KZbin. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into your analysis -- it clearly shows. Great review of the new Defender. As for me, it's more than I want to spend on a new "cushy" off-roader. So, I'll stick with what I have owned since new: a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Ecodiesel, w/ Off-Road Adventure II Pkg ("Quadra-Drive II" and various skid plates), Quadralift, Mopar Rocksliders, Chief Products Lower Front Guard, Sump Protection Plate and Transmission Protection Plate, and a long 3/8" aluminum skid plate protecting the DEF Line (and a valve) underbody, plus Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on 18" wheels. Yes, the Jeep GC is a bit more cramped inside than the new 4-door Defender, but I would imagine that my Jeep GC is also somewhat more nimble out inda voods! (I also carry 2 chain saws -- a battery powered DeWalt and a gas Stihl, along with a lot of other recovery gear.) And, I do prefer a rear "hatch" over a rear "door" -- the rear hatch makes a nice roof over myh head when I'm loading and unloading hunting and fishing equipment. However, I do sorely miss my '04 Chevy Tahoe Z71 (with metal bumpers) -- the perfect size (bigger than the Jeep GC, but not too big) and configuration (rear hatch). I also bought the Tahoe brand new and (unfortunately) wore that thing right out off-roading it in northern Michigan, and driving it on our salty winter roads. Keep up the great work! Do you do any old 4x4 reviews? You'd be really good at it! Look forward to seeing your reviews of the upcoming new Jeep Grand Cherokees and Wagoneers!

I like this temporary change in the format. It’s fun to see you get out and do some “grounds maintenance” and make the Defender do some work other than just mall cruising (like most of the people who will buy one). Generally speaking, I think that if ICE vehicles have a future, they will be equipped with a “mild hybrid” setup like this. Engine start/stop is going to become the norm on everything, but using a 12V starter to restart the engine at every stop is absolutely stupid. The thing that most people find offensive about engine start/stop is the rough operation, especially one vehicles with fewer cylinders. I think that the best way to implement start/stop would be to include a “mild hybrid” setup like this. You can use a more powerful 3-phase motor, spin the engine over much more quickly to allow for a smoother restart. You could also use the hybrid system to power the AC compressor, so you wouldn’t loose your cooling and get humid air out the vents as all start/stop systems cause, and it would allow for the engine to stay off longer, rather than just a few seconds as it does on some cars with the AC running. Using a 48v system, which would be plenty for a mild hybrid setup like this, would also alleviate the issue auto manufacturers are having now with increasing electronics causing big stress on the 12V alternators. Would also allow for smaller gauge wiring throughout the vehicle, reducing weight and cost of the wiring harnesses. There are countless benefits.

It's hit or miss with every vehicle. I mean, seemingly a higher ratio of people are having issues with their Jaguar/Land Rover vehicles than some other brands. There's many who have Tucsons like mine that have quite a few problems, especially the dual-clutch transmission. I've had two and owned the first one for 19 months and have been owning my current one for 14 months now. Both have been great and haven't done what people are saying it does. I got my first one with just under 13k miles on it, and it was totalled in an accident with just over 44k. Second one I got with 26k, and it's now at 53k and I still have no problems. Some are driving it far less hard than I do, and yet I haven't experienced any issues whatsoever. Some are having oil consumption problems with the 1.6T engines, but again I haven't had them in both of mine. There's just some cars that want to watch the world burn while others are just trying to live. I should know, ask my mom about her 2014 Escape 😂

Alex - please advise - We live in Michigan where roads are terrible and many dirt/gravel roads exist. The roads (all, incl highways) get very bad - worse than India! Heavily rutted dirt roads and pot holed roads and highways with large unrepaired expansion joints. My wife would love a Raptor - but we need a 6-7 seater. And we put about 30k miles a year thus warranties run out soon and would like to minimize depreciation. Lastly, a luxury conveniences, comfort and safety are important. The short list is Lexus LX and Defender. Would like to check out Lexus GX and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Anything else to try, and your thoughts and advise please.
