It's so telling that he did that episode in West Virginia, where hunting for your own food is still a very common practice. Most of those kids had probably seen their dads skin deer carcasses or their uncles gutting fish for dinner. At the very least they've probably heard about it and they all know that turning animals into food tends to look kinda gross during the inbetween steps. Also, that bit is SO insidious because if the kids do want the nuggets, he can claim it's because our kids are so 'brainwashed' that they don't even care how gross or """""unhealthy""""" the food is, but if they don't, then he can claim that the difference is so obvious even CHILDREN can understand how disgusting chicken nuggets are. It's such an easy narrative to twist into whatever shape he wants to make himself look right.

To be fair to Jamie Oliver, as a person of Japanese descent, we at times use both chop sticks and a spoon for ramen. Traditionally, it would be a different type of spoon, but there's nothing wrong with using whatever spoon you have on hand. That being said, using the wrong type of noodles is just insane. Imagine the outrage if you told an Italian person you were making spaghetti, but used... well, any pasta other than "spaghetti."

in Korea you can find packs of tofu noodles, it's basically tofu but in noodle form. One time in an attempt to cut down on carbs, I tested out making spaghetti with it... nope 😂 I could only take two bites before I said never mind. (used the rest of the sauce for actual spaghetti noodles)

The worst part about Jamie Oliver's school lunch episodes isn't even the schools that ended up with crappy lunches, it's the schools that ended up with none. There are so many where he pulled up, taught them a new menu, made their old menu look bad, and then buggered off. Naturally, the schools' budgets couldn't accommodate his menus, but the publicity meant they couldn't just use their old menus. As such, they just went without in a lot of cases. "welp, I guess we don't feed the kids at all then."

that was actually a pretty wide-spread belief back then, not just something Kellogg made up himself, it's just the other side of the idea that eating foods like oysters or dark chocolate works like an aphrodisiac which is still around today. Personally I've only ever seen it used to make dips and spreads for things like that or toast/sandwiches, and as far as that goes it's great. With the right flavor combo I could potentially see it working on something like a burger, because burgers (like sandwiches) provide a pretty wide range of options that can work even when they might not sound like it on paper. So y'know, basically the same kind of things that other types of jam tend to be used for. But fried rice? Nah. Just about the only way I could see it getting anywhere near fried rice is maybe if it was used as one of the components in making a dipping sauce where you want a bit of both sweetness and heat. And even then it'd definitely be something kept on the side, not incorporated into the dish itself.

The towel on top of the egg is also to use less liquid in the marinade. Because you want the marinade to completely cover the eggs if you were to purely use marinade then you would have a lot of wasted liquid. However, a paper towel on top helps to wick the marinade on top of the egg. Using less liquid but still allowing for full coverage.

The story with the uncle is really something.... unique. I only know it the other way around. My father sometimes has a bit too much of a temper. So he can get louder, then he always goes into his room and comes back after an hour or so and tries to apologize for getting loud. My mother then usually tries to irritate him even more so that he gets loud again, just to tell him that being loud isn't right. This has been going on for over 50 years now, and my father hasn't even forgotten their wedding anniversary and has always (!) come back with flowers and presents. He also put together all the cupboards, beds, shelves, electronics, tables, chairs, swings, sandpits, garden sheds himself, only recently (he and she are now 82) she thinks he has become a bit lazy. This upsets him again and he goes to his room, only to come down later and apologize for being loud again. She then explains to him that getting loud was never an option with her parents and that he only gets loud because he was an only child and his father always got loud. Then he always grumbles a bit and then does various things around the house, which I now often have to help him with when I'm there, as he's not “30 years younger”, as he says. Then we have coffee (or tea) and cake. Or “normal” food (which I then often prepare), where it is made clear that I haven't made enough of an effort, but they like me nevertheless.

Kimchi as a ramen topping isn’t unheard of. I don’t remember whether I’ve seen the combo in Japan, but you get lots of hits if you search for キムチラーメン (kimuchi rāmen). Ramen is not traditional Japanese cuisine and is considered a fast food there. So it comes in many more varieties than the standard versions we get in the West.
